      For the really heavy loads the latest trucks have automatic transmissions combined with double reduction final drives and planetary gears. These multiply the torque by up to 4x or even higher depending on requirements. No manual gearbox or clutch would cope. These sorts of drivelines were pioneered in the Hayes and Pacific logging trucks in Canada where the engines were only 400hp but were able to carry 50+tons of logs.

      As a child I was always fascinated by huge trucks and earth movers.
      I remember one day in particular when I sat under a tree and watched a dozer
      cut a new road into the side of a hill. I never got in the way of the operator and in the afternoon he stopped and came over to where I was sitting. He asked if there was a store where I could get some cold soda. It was maybe a couple blocks away but he gave me some money and I ran the errand. We drank our sodas and he chatted a bit before going back to work. Strange that I've never forgotten that. Sometimes I go on Google Earth and look at that same location. Not much has changed since then and it looks pretty much the same as it did 75 years ago. Still like the big trucks and machines.

      @@norman7179 For sure .I also remember when I was about 8 they moved two houses in next door to our home. Spent the Summer on that . Funny thing is when I was 31years I ended up lifting my own 1910 post & beam house. Then I dug out the foundation area, building forms & having a couple guys help on pour days. I did exactly what the crew did to prep & finish the lift job. Kids do watch & learn. P.S. I also Google that location ( grandpa built the home) . Here's to staying young . Good day sir., Nick

    From what I know with my experience a large load whatever you may consider that is usually is done by matching gears when going upon large hills, the tractor behind doesn't not stare they instead collide bumpers ahead of their matching gears and have to main that speed and rpm. They may have to do it differently here I'm guessing with a 18 speed.

    Yes, perhaps I should clarify. I meant that this is ALSO done in the United States. I know that Australia and Africa do it regularly due to the lack of a cross country railway system. It is very rarely done in the continental US, as most large heavy objects are transported by railway, but it does happen. Thank you for pointing that out-wasn't exactly sure what country this was in. Only knew that it wasn't US as they are driving on the left side of the road. Actually, I believe Komatsu is based in Japan, although that doesn't mean the trucks being moved were made there. 😎

    @N8570E Před rokem +1

    Matt Hayes, AWESOME!!!
    What are the trucks (vehicles, lorries, whatever?)? And what are their engines (liter size)? I assume that they are heavy-duty severe service (?) 6 X 6's (or 4X6's?)? The following is to the best of my knowledge:
    The front unit has a Kenworth hog-nose ( conventional, straight, no slope to the hood). Later it has a Mack hog-nose (slightly sloped hood) leading, in tandem (for hills/slopes?).
    The second unit has a Kenworth cab-over (cab over engine, COE). Later it has a Mack (?) hog-nose (slightly sloped hood) in tow.
    And why the towing? Was it a backup???
    Beautiful equipment! May you and yours stay well and prosper.

    • @MattHayesAU
      @MattHayesAU  Před rokem

      Hey Terry lots to get there and a lot I don’t have questions for to be honest sorry, the vehicles are usually the normal road models with the larger of the engine capacity’s suited to this type of work.
      The tandem pulling is for more horse power up a couple of big hills and when a truck is on the end it is fit extra brake power.
      The variants of cab over (flat nose) and conventional bonneted trucks are just what the user choose to purchase at the time , a lot has been written about the benefits of each over the years but it comes down to what the user prefers at the time no doubt.
      Sorry I can’t help more.
