hazface - if it was a question of English you'd have a good point. But, it's not a question of English. The *whole* point of the sketch is that Gilbert and Sullivan are presaging 1970s films - in this case, Dirty Harry. And the scene being parodied was the police officer (Callahan) speaking to the would-be robber and saying "I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five? ....".
    That's what I think, anyway. ;-)

If you give the public the same types of plots, characterisations and attitudes they are used to, you have a greater chance of success. In Victorian times, musical operettas were the "comfort food" entertainment of the (upper)-middle classes. Giving the public proto-versions of 20th century entertainment would have been so mystifying to them that they would have become hostile. Giving them colonial-type racism mixed with all the other attitudes they grew up with would have been far more popular.

    • @yellowblanka6058

I might just be wanking off my brain here, but I think it's partly due to the excellent blackadder performance. Edmund Blackadder was a contemporary man in ridiculous times and that narrative sounds very inspiring. You have the whole history of humanity in which to plop down some contemporary people and from the following interaction between the ages, so to speak, hilarity ensues.
