  • There’s one particular branch of filmmaking that seems to get overlooked more than others; animation! For whatever reason, these movies often get picked last in film school gym class, but not today! We’re giving hand drawn cells, computer animation, stop motion, claymation, anime, fairy tales and cartoons their due. Here are our picks for the Top 10 Animated Movies of All Time.
The great thing about animation and the thing that keeps it tricky to categorize is that it’s not a genre, but a style. An aesthetic choice by a filmmaker the same as a film stock. So we’re breaking animated films down by category. From fantastic Studio Ghibli fairy tales to hyper violent anime science fiction, from classic Disney musicals to Pixar movies hitting you in the feels to a mind-bending exploration of humanity through stick figures to a trippy experiment Into the Spider-verse and beyond, animated films can be the funniest, saddest and most action packed movies out there all at the same time.
    The Picks:
Fairy Tale - Spirited Away - 2001 - director Hayao Miyazaki
Adventure - Boy and the World - 2013 - director Alê Abreu
    Sci-Fi - Akira - 1988 - director Katsuhiro Otomo
Action - Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse - 2018 - directors by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman
Horror - The Wolf House - 2018 - Joaquin Cociña and Cristóbal León
    Musical - Fantasia - 1940 - Various directors
Comedy - Wallace and Gromit: The Wrong Trousers - 1993 - director Nick Park
Family Drama - Toy Story - 1995 - directors John Lasseter, Lee Unkrich, Josh Cooley and Valerie LaPointe
Adult Drama - Persepolis - 2007 - Marjane Satrapi and Winshluss
    Mind Bending - It’s Such a Beautiful Day - 2012 - director Don Hertzfeldt

This. So much this. There were times where there was a movie I was thinking of for the spot would show up early and I'd get momentarily mad and think, "BUT, MY MOVIE HAS FOUR KINGS!" and then they'd get to their pick and I'd nod my head and go, "All right, four Aces beats four Kings".

See this, like all their other videos, is why Cinefix are the kings of Top 10 list.
They don't just give an arbitrary 10 ten items based on opinion; they give a thoughtful essay of the strength and weaknesses of the subject matter, splitting each entry into their own category and listing the best of the best in each; each numbered spot surrounded by tons of honorable mentions so you not only get an idea, through example, of what this category entails, but why the numbered movie is the epitome of the class; where the ranking means just about nothing, but provides powerful context, which creates the feeling that the #10 movie is just as important and impactful as #1 or any inbetween.

To repeat my comment, I wish it would be a mention in this category. That is my opinion. Treasure Planet did a lot of groundbreaking things with their animation and created an amazing atmosphere in the movie (an aspect that they specifically referenced in the video for an example of great visual story telling in animation)., and I feel like that is not appreciated enough. When it comes to the sci-fi category, I absolutely agree that Akira should be the favorite, but (to repeat my comment again because you didn't read it correctly) I wish Treasure Planet got a mention when discussing sci-fi animation movies. Sometimes matching up motion in the video to the 3D characters skeleton in almost a rotoscoping fashion. Industrial Light & Magic exceeded standard motion capture, to make this one feel like a stage performance inside a 3D animated movie.

I don't even care what comes up on this list, you put Sleeping Beauty in the opening shot, and that alone makes me so unbelievably happy. It's a seriously gorgeous, seriously underrated Disney movie. Needless to say, just getting an honorable mention was enough to make me smile.
That said, I'm so glad you've done an animated movies list. There's a beauty and artistry in animated movies that doesn't exist anywhere else. They're for adults as much as kids, and they stay with us in ways that grow as we do.
    So thank you, Cinefix. :D
