Like, this show was NOT supposed to be a hit and it had basically no budget. It's why I kind of love the first season even though it's a bit cheesy, it shows that whether it has its season 5-6 budget or its season 1 budget, it's made by people who know how to tell a good story that is entertaining, has great characters, subverts your expectations and has something real to say despite all the monsters.

In 1960 TV and radio was not recordable at home, phone calls were prohibitively expensive, there were no computers at home. By 1990 you could be recording the radio on your home personal computer with an ISA expansion card, while talking on a long distance telephone call to a friend in another country, and monitoring a satellite weather feed while watching a home recorded movie on your video player. The only real difference in 2020 from 1990 is that you can be doing those things on your mobile phone. That's a technological refinement rather than a paradigm shift

My 80s ghetto had a new feature where you could skip to the next song on the tape. It was so awesome. Within a few years, CDs were out and the skipping was instant. The concept was not new, but the lack of waiting was appreciated. Then we waited for movies to take the leap. After that, it was not tech so much as the changing industry and distribution would actually put out TV shows on tape/disk and movies out within months after the premiere. Now, streaming.
But, I still like hard copy of my very favorite shows to get around services losing the broadcast rights.

Well, back then, it was still analog television, not digital. Television sets, were still mostly square boxes, with cathode ray tubes inside them, not the monitor screens of today, that are used for computers and do double duty as television screens.
Though the mechanical knobs were replaced with buttons by then, and the transition from VHF to UHF channels, became unnoticed.
The point is, the picture ratio was smaller, and people needed to be closer together for some scenes, so they looked to be in kissing range, if that's what's making you uncomfortable.
However, a song, "Don't Stand So Close to Me!", in retrospect, I suppose did help to spread the message out there about the relatively new concept of, "Personal Space". That violating it was skin to violating a nation's airspace. 🤔

...she was also a part of a song-and-dance troupe which performed in the Las Vegas Valley when she was nine years old.
After high school graduation, Carpenter traveled throughout Europe. When she returned to San Diego, she worked as a video store clerk, an aerobics instructor, and in property management. In 1991, she worked as a cheerleader for the, "San Diego Chargers", football team. In 1992, she moved to Los Angeles, California. 👯
So, "Cordelia Chase", has that in her favor! 🤓

Awww man hurts my heart to hear Chris hate on True Blood. I say this not to yell at Chris but rather try to get people like Spidey to still give it a chance even though they may hear negative things about it.
I mean the criticism is definitely valid in later seasons but there is still plenty of reason to give it a watch because it is just sooo damn fun! It is an absolute off the rails wild ride which I personally find hilarious and entertaining as hell.
True Blood is pretty incredible! And is rather amazing that they pulled off something no many shows are able to do. Which is have a modern Sci fi show with interesting likable characters, with crazy cliffhangers/twists and turns, and really intriguing mysteries BUT at the same time walking a line between serious and campiness that is over the top and ridiculous. Or at least they did for the first several seasons. But I think even some of the crappy parts of True Blood are still great…in the so bad it’s good sort of way.
True Blood a comedic campy sci fi show that actually has some really interesting characters and twists in the writing well 75% of it is anyway give or take. The last few seasons are quite a mess and make some really cheesy choices in the story? But honestly I think there is still some real great entertainment in that haha…
Sorry just had to stick up for one of my guilty pleasures for a sec haha

Fun fact: Nosferatu was created because the film makers couldn't get the IP rights for Dracula. The IP owners sued them and the court ordered all copies of the film destroyed, which would've happened if a single copy of the film hadn't made it to the USA where the court order didn't apply.

    39:14 _"Because I fucking know what's good for you that's why!"_ *~Micky*
Shortly after my daughter was born I was given *the absolute best parenting advice* by a neighbor who was a kindergarten teacher. It's saved my ex-wife and I from the headaches most other parents deal with.
She told us _"Try not to say _*_'no'_*_ to your child, but rather, explain _*_'why not'_*_ as your initial answer._ If you say _"no,"_ you open yourself up to all that _"but whyyyy?"_ and _"because I said so!"_ crap. But if you get into the habit of trying to explain *why not* right from the start, I tell you it's a much more peaceful way of parenting.
My daughter is 34 years old now, so I can tell you _this is doable._ 😊

I kind of love the hate for Cordelia just because I know her journey. I feel like almost every major cast member will get hate at some point. They are all beautifully flawed characters. Cordelia never loses her wit but becomes so much more interesting than a queen bitch.

This episode was the first to really provide a glimpse of what the show will become.
This episode took a fucked-up aspect of American culture -- that some parents want to live vicariously, through their children, and subject their kids to some ugly abuse, thereby -- exaggerated it, and then added a dash of supernatural horror.
That's what made Buffy such a cultural phenomenon.
It holds up a funhouse mirror to some particularly twisted parts of our culture (Why do we like to see attractive young people brutally slaughtered in slasher flicks, just because they had sex?) and makes some clever, and quite sharply pointed, comments about that.
The group's reaction to the next episode should be quite interesting. The production values, in it, are not great, but it can illustrate some weird double-standards. 😀
