Bethal Mpumalanga South Africa - A small farming town.

  • Bethal is a farming town which lies 155 km east of Johannesburg in the Mpumalanga region of South Africa, covering an area of 51 square kilometres and home to a population of approximately 75000 inhabitants.
    The town originated and was established on 12 October 1880 on an old farm called Blesbok spruit, and the Origin of the name: The Beth- comes from Elizabeth du Plooi, wife of the co-founder Cornelius Michiel du Plooi, and the - “al” comes from Petrus Johannes' wife, Alida Joubert.
    The earliest Naudé settlers in the Transvaal were almost all farmers. Petrus Johannes Naudé and his large family, as well as other relatives, settled in Bethal in the Eastern Transvaal. Their original land was named Naudésfontein.
    Petrus Johannes Naudé, great-great-grandfather's younger brother, demonstrated exceptional entrepreneurship and was the founder of Bethal.
    The established town became a municipality in 1921.
