Haha that first etude was my first ever TMEA (Texas) region excerpt, I was in 7th grade, and needless to say, I didn't do very good.
The next year, I scored first chair, though, for very different excerpts, and while I celebrated, I often wondered if I would ever be able to play that first etude to the same degree degree of quality.
Now, 7 years later, I've performed Weber's 2nd clarinet concerto, Spohr's 1st Concerto, Debussy Premiere Rhapsody, and many other standard works which are sooo much harder.
No matter where you are now, always remember, in 5-10 years, if you keep working hard, being thoughtful, curious, and open-minded, you'll have progressed so unimaginably far!
What I would have given for a video like this back in 2016. If you're going for OMEA, pay attention to every second of this video! It's so thorough and helpful!
Side note: I'm so glad you made this video, as now I know what that etude was! I'd lost my music to it many years ago, but now, I can practice it again, and finally get it up to the quality I've always wanted it!
Amazing job on this video, as always, Mr. Kurokawa! 😄

@@john.kurokawaNo problem, and it's going great! Excerpt Board exam is next week, asking for Beethoven 6, Brahms 3, and Mendelssohn Scherzo, and in 2-3 weeks, we a Performance board exam, where I'll be playing the Copland Clarinet Concerto, 1st movement and Cadenza. I've made a new CZcams account where I posted my board exam from last year; it was Weber Clarinet Concerto 2. I'll post my next board exam as soon as it's recorded, as well as a couple of more recordings that I've done throughout the year.
Thanks for all your inspiration, I probably wouldn't have started it without seeing you and Mr. Baldeyrou's amazing channels! I'll start commenting with the new one soon :)

(First of all, this titanic rant has nothing to do with you, you created a fantastic video, I’m just expressing the frustration I have with these all state associations haha.) This is my personal opinion, but once you’ve reached a certain level, these all state organizations are more detrimental than beneficial. To many players, yes the competition allows them to learn how to approach music and overall improve technique, articulation, whatever the etude specializes, however that’s not the problem, not at all! (The Voxman and the Rose Etudes are fantastic, they’re great practice.) I don’t know about OMEA, but I can speak for TMEA. (which I’ve noticed has developed quite a reputation among fellow high schoolers, especially among the clarinet world.) The approach, especially at the higher level of auditioners, I find to be quite unhealthy and the mindset I’ve noticed being developed defeats the purpose of these etudes. I cannot express how vexed I become every year when I see people completely disregard the slower etudes all to emphasize the faster, technical etudes because they “sound more impressive” (in which again, that’s not what they’re meant for! Haha. And I will stand by this statement for the rest of my life: everybody has good technique, NOBODY has a good legato. You want to impress me? Play Brahms 3rd Symphony.) And to continue on my unhealthy mentality argument, it’s inevitable that people will treat the fast etude as a competition and compete for the fastest Rose 26 for example or Rose 18. As you can imagine, this, plus the neglect of the slower, musical etudes, will commonly result in some sacrilegious interpretations. I’ve never liked these associations, but mostly because for me, they eliminate the enjoyment of studying these etudes and improving from them. Etudes I used to enjoy practicing and learn from so much I now almost can’t bare anymore because they have become badgering and I almost describe it as a dementor effect from Harry Potter haha. It sucks all the good away, and leaves you with the bad.

You’re right. I’ve experienced this on CZcams. But I still have hope. Even though the slower excerpts I record don’t do as well for views, I am going to make the content I want to make because like you, I prize legato (hence why I play the clarinet) and musical uniqueness. It bothers me that so many young players treat music like a ‘sport’ and take a sports-like attitude towards music. It’s not about being faster or more impressive- for me it will always be about spinning beautiful sounds in the hall and searching (still at 52 years old) for my own musical identity. I completely understand your frustration and appreciate your comments. Thanks for watching!

Yoo very insightful for the audition process, which etude/studies books would you reccomend the most, I cant really manage to work on all of them at the same time. I know OMEA uses voxman so maybe that and rose?
    Thanks!

It depends on what level you're at. Voxman is really not my favorite, but the Rose 40 and 32 are mainstays in the repertoire. Can you tell me a little more about yourself- your goals and what level you're at currently? Thanks for watching!

@@john.kurokawa yeah I’m a high school clarinetist I think my tone is pretty good and air support when compared to my technical ability, so thats what I’m trying to focus on right now. I didn’t have a private teacher until like a few months ago, but I regained some passion for the clarinet and I am practicing it daily and enjoying it much more(it really is the highlight of my day)! I’m on rose 3 right now and my scales could use some work so maybe I should do baerman after rose? And for my level I think I could nail solo de concours be messager in maybe a week or two. Thanks!

Also when I say my tone is pretty good in comparison, I’m not saying it’s good, I’m humbly trying to get better at everything. But I uploaded some videos to of my playing(just noodling by memory)

@@john.kurokawa my goal is to become the best clarinetist I can and maybe play for a orchestra one day(a youth orchestra is fine lol) some of my favorite clarinetists include Stephen Williamson, Eddie Daniel’s, Harold right, Ricardo morales, Marcellus,(and you)

Awww, thanks! I'm honored to be on the list. The third division of Baeramnn is always good, but it can be a bit overwhelming- the Klosé scale page and thirds are also great. If you're doing the Messager though, that's pretty impressive! I'd say trust your teacher, if you're studying with a teacher you like. Hopefully, they have you on a good regimen of etudes. Best of luck with your goals!
