I loved this for many reasons.
It was imaginative and compelling with all kinds of possibilities which my mind to explored as the story unfolded ! The dark dreary setting and ominous lighting created an atmosphere that was tangible and the soundscape filled it with textures. It was really well shot and the acting gave it depth and feeling, the story itself was very unpredictable and I enjoyed watching it play out.
The only slight drawback was the dialogue wasn't too clear but I quickly clicked on the 'Captions' button to turn them on, I would not have understood much without them. I realise this was intentional as the soundtrack was an integral part of the film's atmosphere which would have been very difficult to sustain if the voices were more up front.
Well done !
Ian Clarke we shouldn’t have to turn on captions to find out what’s said. They can make a movie dark but there’s such a thing as so dark you can’t see what the hell is even happening, so if you can’t see nor hear it how is that good?
@@Jillysmom63 I watch on a high quality PC with large screen and cinema surround sound. Turning up the volume to hear the voices made the room shake and widows rattle so I had to keep it to a sensible level. I could hear the voices fine but occasionally I missed a word or two which I found slightly distracting as the voices sometimes got a bit swamped by the soundscape. This has a very complex soundtrack with multiple layers and channels, there is a lot more going on in this film than most others including music videos.
When you upload to YT they compress the video and audio which can sometimes have a negative effect overall, it's impossible to predict how a video will sound after YT's compression and very difficult to create a soundscape like this one with perfect vocals that will not be messed up slightly. I don't think reading the captions is too distracting and you can't blame the film makers for YT's compression or for failing to predict or compensate for YT messing up the audio.
I'm sure the uncompressed version would be much better, he best way to judge the quality of audio and video is on the original cut, not the YT upload.
@@ianc4901 oh! That was such an interesting explanation! I've always wondered about this (though didn't quite know enough to put the pieces together). I will remember this in future! Thanks! 😊
It seems a lot of these 'shorts' don't really have to have a meaning as such, leaving a lot of people confused in the comments. Maybe some of these are made by young wanabe movie makers trying to show what they 'could do' with a bigger budget.
@@raedgaj3878 It pretty obviously does have a meaning.
It is about creating pathways from mathematics and mind power that you can use to go from one place to another and how a married couple of scientists experimented on people and themselves in order to develop this idea. In the process things go wrong with the mind and some peoples bodies but the question is, is that an acceptable risk ?
Did you think it was a random series of unconnected events and scenes put together to show the film makers skills ?
Please consider crediting the actors. The danish actor Rudi Køhnke for his great performance, considering what he fights with in his real life. He's fighting mentally in his real life too.
Astonishing performance! So profound and sensitive! Great actor!
Totally agree
Perhaps that’s the nature of preforming emotion.
Um, I have CC on all the time.
Really enjoyed this one and glad I watched it . Sometimes they're "Skip", sometimes they're "Meh", sometimes they're "Errr okay", and once in a while they're "Really glad I watched that one".
@Peter A. Well, Nick said that he enjoyed it so you can infer which category was the film for him, right?)
I love how dark it is, bc when he got in the air vent it reminded me of playing metal gear solid as a kid and I always loved that.
Far too often these things tell half a story or just aren't very good. But every once in a while one of these shorts actually tells a good, complete story and still leaves me wanting more. This was one of those.
Even with the lack of details of what was going on in terms of the research this was still a remarkably gripping short with characters so well portrayed with so few lines of dialogue. That I want to see more speaks volumes.
Bravo! An actual story line with character development that in 19 minutes is both compelling and satisfying. The talent drips from every facet of this jewel of a production. A moment of bliss lingering on the senses, full of possibilities, changing the fabric of reality. This is art.
Well said 💕 🙏🏽🕊️🇬🇧
I guess some people's minds can't do science fiction / fantasy. My mother couldn't understand humour. I couldn't imagine a life without laughter.
There's just no accounting for taste. Personally, I think this is a masterpiece. In the sense that I'd probably need to watch three dozen sci-fi shorts to find another one this good. But that's just my opinion.
What? It had none of those. The story line was what exactly? And what character development? Methinks you just want to use fancy words but don't know what they mean...
Randal Don't be so dramatic, jeez
WoaH!
...he doesn't need the precious notebook anymore...."Bye Felicia"... ')
Thank You Dust!
"Bye Felicia" indeed.
He's gone 3-d... (or beyond?)
The names are evocative.
Ignus - ignite - because he was literally on fire in the opening and because his ideas lit the universe on fire.
I. Periant - somewhere between impertinent and imperative - the stark necessity to buck the controller of the experiments.
D. Redfield - dreadful - her experiments.
Diana Redfield - "Die in a red field." - because of her willingness to tread on the bodies she sacrifices.
Talya - tally, one mark in the many "data points."
I really enjoyed this short. I watched it yesterday and I'm rewatching again today and just as interested in the story and characters. Thanks for this, it is better than the majority of full length features being distributed
Dust carries the best of the best of short sci-fi films!
This channel is not only underrated, but should be bought up by Netflix, Hulu or Prime. These films need to be seen. They deserve a much wider worldwide audience.
I wish this become a full length movie
I didn't even read the title at first.
When he was pulling the glowing strings from the wall I thought it was a clip from Dr. Strange.
But I'm so glad to watch this short.
I was hoping it would be longer. I wanted to see how he got to where he was.
Very well made short-film. It's one of those movies you want to be longer, but you realize at the same time that the mystery, compact intruige and pieces left to your imagination, is what makes this movie great.
🔵 The audio was all over the place, I had to turn it down because the crashing, slamming effects were too loud, but then the dialogue got buried in the background noise and I had to turn it up louder to make it out, ever aware that the background could VERY suddenly become too loud again.
Also, the video was mostly WAY too dark, making it difficult to immerse oneself in the ambience of the story.
Constantly having to ride-gain on the volume throughout the presentation, much of the dialog being unintelligible and the ridiculously low contrast of the video all made for very difficult viewing.
The audio needs to be compressed/leveled and the video details need to be brightened up a bit.
I despise those kinds of movies. So I will advise you to invest in a better video card and monitor because I had no problem watching this dark setting. As for the sound, yeah it was a bit loud and I hate it when dialogue gets lost in the ambient audio. But again, my old analog desktop speakers did a great job, despite the bursts of loud sound. So I'm taking umbrage with your comment, not hating because I agree that what you experienced sucks. Just saying my tech is better than yours.
@@nothingsurprisesmeanymore Why wouldn't they?
J.T. Harrison ,
🔵 I believe your use of the word "Umbrage" is inappropriate here as "Umbrage" equates to taking something as an insult or being resentful of it,.... I don't believe you meant to express THAT strong a reaction to my comment.
I keep my tablet-screen at a brightness nominal for enjoying most viewing, yet still not so bright that I use up my battery-charge too-quickly, with this presentation I had to turn the brightness up comparatively high in order to appreciate the video aspect.
.... So, please understand that I DO have the ability to turn the brightness up-to QUITE an appreciable level, however, it goes through my battery rather quickly at that brightness.
As for the sound, I have Altec Lansing satellites and a 12-in. Sealed ( Acoustic suspension ) subwoofer,.... But of course, the better the speakers the more annoying the inequity of the sound is,... as I like to listen to presentations such as this with the audio at an 'Immersive' volume-level.
Using a desktop with realtek board and Macke speakers. Picture dark and still viewable. As for the audio, agree with other comments. Audio needs some compression and leveling.
@@joshhayl7459 I'm using an off the shelf aged (age-ed) HP laptop with 17" screen. The battery is old so I keep it plugged in. I find no problem with either the sound or picture quality. Of course at almost 68yrs old I've seen all sorts of qualities in sound and visual content, so I can enjoy about any type of audio/visual displays, even without "Altec Lansing satellites and a 12-in. Sealed ( Acoustic suspension ) subwoofer".
WOW!!!! Really, really, liked this one for all the right reasons!! Hats off to everyone associated with this masterpiece! The acting? OMG!! These thespians need to be a household name! The writing, production value, soundtrack, SFX, simply amazing!! The directions and directing just..... no words! I’ll work these great individuals any day, anywhere, anytime!!!👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿💯💯💯💯
The actors in this one were really some of the best you've had....although only a few. I quite enjoyed the open ending and the missing memories adds to the confusion and urgency of the story. Maybe consider a follow up to this episode.
Agreed, would love to see more of this world! Thank you for watching.
We were well aware that we had more than enough story and ideas for a feature. Getting funding for these isn't easy - and primaries (2 of us) hardly got any salary. Tons worked for free. It was nice doing 'scope', but how the director and set designer didn't go completely bonkers under strain is beyond me :) I hope the actors see your comment.

Here is a wonderful example of science-fiction story telling, as it reveals no matter how far and grand we unlock the secrets of the Universe, we are still hindered by our most petty emotional whims and unending desires. For this is the motivation that drives us to our grandest ventures while it also guides us towards unspeakable Madness. It is here, by which, the Angels did Fall from Grace, Wings did burn off, as they fell like Comets onto the Earth. How far will our wings carry us before the weight of our own Hubris brings us down?
Oh, this is what string theory is... Got it.
Lol. That's not string theory.
Sheldon Cooper - I beg to differ!

Amazing. Whoever did this needs to have a show.
Where your mind goes there you are. Having, is not the end all, just a beginning. To be, is the great treasure, not to have! Heavenly wisdom!
Soo true.
I'm a bit baffled by the negative nellies in the comments who say this has no plot and it was an incoherent mess. For me, this one of the best shorts I've seen a great big while coming from DUST. The way the story unfolded with a lot of show and only a little tell was awesome and gripping, the whole idea behind the very runic-like symbols being the gateway to the fabric of space and time, and overall production values made this a real treat. The only criticism I have is about volume: either the pronunciation or the mixing of the dialog was a bit off, and when Talya was introduced, I had to turn captions on to understand what she was saying - though for me this is a small matter, as I tend to watch everything with captions on anyway.
Great stuff!
need more tell
Can't please everyone
Really enjoyed this. Acting, lighting, soundtrack, camera, FX. 😎👍
Had to turn on Captions partway through though. Some fine-tuning re: audio compression on the VOX mix would be good in spots. (2c)
Same. As soon as she arrived I had to turn on subtitles.
This is why I wish dust made more sequels
Out of all the DUST shorts, this one lands firmly within my top 3 so far. Excellent composition! Dark, gritty, well-paced, thought-provoking and just the right amount of dialogue. Acting was great as well.
This one would DEFINITELY make way for an amazing series and/or movie.
what are the other 2
A film chalked full of originality, suspense, grunge, and agony, all intelligently tied to advanced string theory. Now throw in some stellar acting, rusty sets, crisp and tight camera work, scratchy sounds, gripping music, plus peach/orange light from a massive planet, - and what do you have, but a top notch riveting cinematic experience! Congrats...
My god you guys are freaking underated, too few people know you and y'all deserve more popularity for making shorts this amazing.
They don't make shorts. They steal them from other people and put them on this channel.
Really? Not good if don’t credit The film makers!
I've been wondering when this was going to drop.
This is some "Expanse" level stuff. I'd love to see more of this, series, feature film, anything. Excellent!
If they made full length movie dust would be great.
nah this should be a series
Why always like this DUST? Its all for youtube only?
FINALLY!!!
Whoever did this deserves an internship with Spielberg.
I watch maybe a half dozen of these shorts daily, salivating waiting for the thrill ride to pull me in, but none ever come through. I always end up confused and feeling like nothing had cohesion because there was no back story or lead in to start from.
I'm floundering through the whole film for a grasp on what's happening but it never comes. Kinda like Star Wars where you have so much focus on light saber battles and indecipherable tech babble but no substance.
This one KILLED IT! Id love to see new installments of this theme.
I love everything about this one: Lovecraftian horror and insanity blended with scifi. Great acting, brilliant atmosphere, really nasty plot. I'd love to see more from this crew.
What a wonderful piece. Riveted from the start - this is my first time watching DUST - bravo!
Never seen a movie where magic is depicted that mystical, precarious and scarcely comprehensible even for the caster. A masterpiece.
I just wanted to say that this is my favourite short movie ever. And I've seen many...
I want a full 2h movie about this story!
How can they have soooooooooo many awesome works that can be made into a movie/series but they don't become one
This good love it when a dust short leaves you wanting more
A filmmaker's film - one that ticks all the boxes - and will definately be on my rewatch list! Great story, great acting, great production values!
The fabric as in like time travel in a way.... Honestly see alot of potential in this omg i want to see more this is great
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A mind puzzle short film. It seriously deserves a continuation. I always pay attention to the Danish cinema production, have found some pearls all long the years. They're specially good on mistery-crime ones too.
All the production, directing and acting are following the right path on how to make a movie. Congrats to you all guys! 👏
Okay DUST THAT'S IT.... I CHALLENGE YOU TO MAKE A FULL LENGTH MOVIE.... DO YOU ACCEPT?
Not fair to make awesome flicks..lol
Dust doesn't make these shorts. You know that, right?
@Clock Murph The purpose of Dust is to showcase shorts by other people. They might have produced one themselves, but the purpose of the channel is to show off videos by other people
Dust doesn't make these. They just collect them and put them all in one place.
Dust is similar to an art show or a convention
Absolutely lovecraftian but not in an obvious way. Love it!
Yep. Want the sequel !
Amazing! Its a shame the writer didnt get more than a quick credit at the end, brilliant story well told. Lets hope the key players on this team get together for more!!
I really enjoyed this short Dust! It had a great plot and interesting insight into the science of reality. I usually am okay and done with these shorts after I watch them cause they typically have some closure but I feel this short could very well be continued and added on with some more backstory and has a looooot of potential to be turned into something great. Please let the storymaker and writers and producers know that many of us would love to see more exploration into this short and story. I believe this could truly be turned into a hit tv series with even possibilities of movie contracts and deals. Y'all keep up the fantastic work I love seeing new content from y'all Dust!!
@@toddy2519 the bare whisper of one maybe. Dirty scientist/magician tries to escape prison hell where humans are experimented on horrifically, while also tryingvto remember why he is there?
Watched it twice, working on my 3rd... I would love to see this either made into a feature length film or series if at all possible... This is a very good premise with many excellent possibilities...
Excellent! If I've watched 100 scifi shorts, this is top 5. Great story, intrigue, acting, and pace.
I’m so hooked this is my new fav channel such originality and hard work
Grateful to have this back - annoyed my words from first upload lost
NICE! Great job Dust! Would totally watch if a whole movie! Wish there were sequels to these short films.......
I love this movie, in the end he gave it as a gift as he is the real writer he dont need it to be strong...because he is strong enough
I wish this was a whole series so badly
I'm amazed he survived at all unprotected in space. I would've thought his body would freeze solid and his lungs implode or explode, but I'm no expert.
It should be possible to survive in space without a suit for about 15 seconds, at least according to a quick Google. According to this article: slate.com/news-and-politics/2007/08/can-you-survive-in-space-without-a-spacesuit.html the bigger issue is whether he had air in his lungs or not. If he held his breath, his lungs would rupture and create air bubbles in the blood stream thus killing him. I think in the short he screamed his lungs out before being thrown into space, so that would make his lungs void of air, and thus he should be able to survive a short time in space.
@@janikarkkainen3904 Thank you for clarifying this Jani. I am quite happy to be in nice warm Australia rather than cold space 😊

Cool vid!
Now you know the reality changes I'VE been dealing with the last 30 years....
I really have this love hate feeling with videos like these. Love it because I enjoy the cosmic horror concept and the numerous possibilities the story could go, and hate it because I feel like there won't be a full length movie about this fabric concept. It pains my heart so that such creativity lack the fame it deserves.
When I go to the comments for someone to explain the short film and there are none. 😣😣😣
It's Dust, man. It reminds me so much of Heavy Metal magazine back in the day. Like a snapshot of a fantastic alternate reality, but only a snapshot. How we got here and where we are going lives only in your imagination.

Scroll up. He wrote a book about it
someone gave an explanation and Dust favourited it.
Dr Ignus Periant is learning how to bouncing between multiple realities in what looks to be a prison in outerspace by making marking from a notebook and then grabbing the new dimension with his hand ..Jumping between realities.he is disoriented a tad....he sees a monster in the hallway ..During a jump he loses his notebook ...but jumps to another prison cell where he meets a woman who apparently has the same marking on her body and who has been successfully avoiding the monster in the hallway by jumping To escape the monster in the hallway Dr Ignus carves the portal markings using the woman's blood on her back to force both to jump.. She retrieves his notebooks during the jump only to be separated. from him.at the end of the jump. Dr periant finds himself in his office with research paper by him and his Dr Diana Redfield ...One of Dr Redfield papers covers the research about the woman whom he had just met in the last jump with the portal markings on her body..When he leaves the office he sees this same woman slumped on the floor with Dr. Redfield holding his notebook . Redfield is his wife . She complains since he would not share his discovery with her she was taking it . Dr Ignus justifying not sharing because he wanted to only use it to help people in the medical ward and he wanted to avoid hurting people. His wife refutes him saying lives need to be sacrificed. Dr Ignus draws his own blood to activate the portal on the woman slumped on the floor and both escapes
OMG THANK YOU. That really helped clarify. That he is using his blood to get him and Talya out at end gives some closure.
They both escape? She's dead
This goes to places traditional SF used to not be afraid to go. To the interface between minds, maths and the psyche, without losing the SF twist. Kudos for the revival.
I loved it because this shows us idea of Such an amazing imaginative power to create and travel through the memories and thoughts
Superb. And that actor who played the lead is beautiful!
That was original, at least for me! I loved the ideas

Really interesting and very enjoyable . Left me wondering where this is going . Reminded me of Clive Barker .
Damn, that was crazy.
After catching this, i now have a complete & total understating of string theory. All my questions & doubts concerning this untested theory along with the spooky action at a distance are now answered & i am at peace & untangled bliss.
Very gripping imagery and the cinematography and editing was perfect...the ending was a beginning. Nice little nugget thrown to Ray Bradbury.....the number on the cell door was 451...from Ray's ''Fahrenheit 451''.
This is gonna become Mage the Awakening inspiration for me. Thanks Henrik Bjerregaard Clausen and the production team!
Carnt work out if the prison is in his mind & all his string theories are driving him insane, interesting film.
I have never commented on a DUST film before, and I have enjoyed many of them. This one was for me, particularly engaging. I loved it. The actor playing the central character was very good.
This Film Took Me Out Of Space, and now im stuck!
absolute brilliancy, it is the inside of the mind i've always been interested in, and when we leave this life we go back inside(home), now we are outside of ourselves, or literally out of our minds...which is kind of ironic but so true !! I'd give you Oscar for this master piece !

Very good actors. Hollywood needs new talent like these ppl
Terrific!
Very good movie. Very good story and from being an actor myself, great acting by all 3 characters. When the guy was in space and came back in the cell, he looked like he really couldn't breath and was freezing. The girl in the cell, really looked like she was emotionally unstable. And the girl at the end played her part very well too. They should all be getting more work in other projects.
