  • Should you give mixed martial arts a shot?
I was awfully out of shape, lazy and Irritable, l wouldnt have been able to defend myself If I had to, and ultimately not very comfortable In my own skin. 2020 was hard on everyone, I had to make a change happen.
No prior experience for me, just a humble attitude and hard work. Majority of the content came from my tiktok @southpaw82.
If you were ever on the fence about strapping gloves on, check this out! You’ll never know until you throw yourself in there. Keep a humble heart and open mind, and see where this path takes you. If this video convinces just 1 person to TRY it, I’d be happy with that. Let me know with a comment if you do give it a go from watching this. 🙏
Pardon the awful quality, this YouTubing thing isn’t as easy as I assumed it would be to create.
    Thank you for watching!

Did MMA 3 years stopped because of my health did 8 years of muay before that and i got back to bjj this year i'm still struggling with my health it kinda sucks but yeah fighting sports are a blessing to have your life, for me it's always been and always will be the best type of sports you can do as a man, socially, mentally and physically it puts everything in it's place, testerone is made to make you reproduce and fight, so yeah that's a good way to do the second part and surely enough attract women to do the first part with your new earned shape and confidence, i'm now teaching kids and i hope i will teach my own kids one day, i'm always happy when i feel that someone really discovered and is on the path of what martial art can truly bring to his life, you can make other people do a lot of things at your place in this life, but you can't make other people take care of your body at your place and the best way to do that as a man is just training in martial arts with a competitive mindset.

I also decided to pick up Muay Thai as a "covid skill." However, I have been learning from youtube only. I have a newborn at home and have not had the confidence that it's safe to go into a gym. Like you, I've been consistently filming my workouts and I just went back and watched some of my earliest workouts. The difference is astonishing. Inspirational footage, man - keep it up! Your kicks, punches, head movement all look excellent only a year into it! Training and taking part in the smoker is something most people will never experience - I am so envious! :D

I completely understand, the world became a scary place once my son arrived.
Time towards the little one always takes priority. BUT, you have to make sure you take care of yourself. I know I was not a healthy guy early on. Congrats on the newborn!
Looking back at it now, 85% of the hard work occurs on my own, at home and outside (and the kitchen). Where nobody is watching you. Once you are able and comfortable to get into gym and classes, capitalize on learning and fixing techniques. Then take it home and keep sharpening your skills.
Props to you being self taught. I personally am not sure if I could have stuck to it without actually going to a gym. CZcams was how it started for me, but I had to get out there to develop and take that discipline home with me.
Thank you for the support. I’m going to be making a 2nd big video/update eventually. Stick with it brother 🙏

Beautiful, MMA for me has been a life changer, it seems like a meditation for me. I began in 2018 and before that I was a good athelete in general, I even was somewhat arrogant due to my physicality and I had certain National level wins and medals/trophies in multiple sports, even had a black belt in taekwondo.. but here man !! In MMA I was thrown around, choked, kicked and punched, overall it was a big humbling yet uplifting experience for me, hard to describe in words. I wish more people should engage in this beautiful sport like you did brother. 🙏🏽

I've actually been practicing boxing and wrestling since I was little, and after that I learned muay thai in middle school and now I'm studying BJJ and aim to get my purple belt this year. To be honest, I think BJJ training is the toughest of the 4 martial arts I'm currently learning (Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, BJJ). for me learning Muay Thai is still easy because before learning Muay Thai I had basic kicking skills that I got from TKD training (even though I didn't study it in depth) before I learned Muay Thai.
And man, I've always wanted to taking part in Smoker. I really want to feel it. You are lucky.

@@Natediaaz209 well I have an interesting story related to your question. in my gym there are two people who have no athletic background. and what's more they both always play soccer in their school and are not good at playing it.
one is an art lover and the other is a book lover.
they both did MMA training in my gym for about 3 months simultaneously.
art people are not good at it, but book people are very good at it.
but even so, the art guy continued his mma training for another 3 months and finally his skills were at the same level as the book guy.
and now back to your question "is it possible to take an mma despite not having an athletic background?", my answer is "yes you can and it is possible".
(sorry if I sound like a cocky guy or something) but to have the same level of skill as someone who has trained their whole life like me, you need time to master basic mma techniques.
but if it turns out that you have mma talent and you don't realize it, you can master basic mma techniques, and even have the same skills as people who practice mma their whole life in a relatively short time.
well i suggest you to give it a try to know if you have talent or not.

u should deffently try mma. I have for almost a year done kickboxing and decided I wanted to try mma. I can say tho that it really helped to beginn with something you more specialise in instead of doing it all. Because then when I tried mma I knew how to kick and punch so it helped. But it was really fun trying wrestling and some bjj. It also helped you know to open my eyes to stuff like singel leg takedowns and so on. Unfortunately for 6 months ago I broke my tendon in my right knee and on my 3 mma practice I broke it again. Really sad so I wont for atleast 2-3 months not be able to do any martial arts so for people out there really take care of your bodies and recover well so you dont get injuried like me because even tho I am only 20 I will probably have to live with my knee like this for the rest of my life.

I’m 17. I did my firsts fight in front of a huge crowd and I gassed out after the first round. You could tell the difference when the kid came at me in round two. However, I lit his leg up the entire fight and it kept him off me a bit. Eventually he out paced me with pressure boxing but I never gave up. I swung until the bell of the last round. Losing that fight sent me to a depressive state, but I also realized how much brain damage a fighter could take after doing this over and over. I still hate myself for losing sometimes, but I always remember that I showed up which most people don’t do. It was painful. The criticism from the haters was also painful. However, I learned that I am thankful at where I am at in life. I have it better off than many people in this world, and I appreciate that. Overall it was an out of this world experience. I achieved a lot by stepping in there, but taking an L like that made me feel like an absolute loser. Fighting can be rewarding and soul crushing at the same time. It was weird.

38, always hated going to the gym. I hate doing weights, like you said, very boring for me. But punching and kicking stuff? Yeah, that is far more fun. For anyone that might be a bit apprehensive, you do not have to fight. It is useful to do very light sparring here and there but honestly, bag and pad work with a good trainer can do wonders. Great sport if you have lots of energy/emotions/ anger to release.

i personally think you should continue with kb for about a year longer and then start mma so as to have a solid enough base in stand-up so you will need to focus on grappling. But you have progressed nicely in 1 year man you have inspired me to double up my training

If you were to go back in time, would you recommend grappling first? I ask only bc of the idea of building stamina. Striking will deff give you a starting point, but I bet grappling could be just as good if not better for beginners just for overall fitness, thinking out loud of course

@@actionjackson8282 i would definately recomend bjj because of the time it takes to get to black belt which is 10 years. later on i would learn kb or striking because it doesnt take so much time to have a good enough level.

@@tabiobenofunde1054 that’s a good tip! I’m speculating, but the benefit to striking for few years helped me get to know everyone for the most part. I’m sure I was a spaz week one, but I think I do understand the idea of relaxing and being used to the pressure too. My cardio felt a little better for sure as well.

That legit sounds like me with BJJ. I’m still helping up from partial tear in my pecs from a competition 2 weeks ago. I popped my left floater rib two weeks before so I couldn’t even train. But I love doing competitions with intent to break someone’s joints lol
I didn’t realize kickboxing had smoker fights. I have been doing kickboxing, bjj and a ton of mma the last three years. I like kickboxing but I love grappling. I did mostly nogi grappling. I thought kickboxing you just had either fights or sparring. I didn’t realize you had fights with full gear on. Although I think going with no shin guards is more fun. It’s like a match of who can take more lol
Congrats on finding something you enjoy. You should try bjj sometime. That is pretty addictive once you realize just how deep it goes. Like guys that could have you out cold in seconds. You definitely realize how helpless you are at first on the ground lol The first 3-6 months you just get murdered learning to breathe with someone 220lbs crushing you so you can’t even take a real breath. Learning to relax and control your breathing is an experience lol You definitely should try it

Edit: I want you to know I really appreciate the thanks on “finding what I enjoy”. It kinda hit me a month later rereading it. I think it’s why the video was ultimately made, to get that love for something shared with the world. I’ve had my hobbies, but this hits different and in the best way.

you should try some dutch kickboxing, i saw that you put your head down alot to dodge / slip punches which is dangerous in kickboxing, stay light on your feet use your frontkick like your jab to keep em at range, when you start with your hands finish with your legs and when you start with your legs finish with your hands, always put 110% in the last 15 seconds of the rounds to get the judges to score for you
