- I repainted a 17 inch Monster High Doll that I got from Amazon. This one's name is Gooliope Jellington, but now that I've changed her I could use some help renaming her. I still need to practice, but I think i'm on a good path. Also tell me what you think about the end result. =D

She turned out super cool! Although as someone REALLY into doll repainting, a lot of things you did were unnecessary, and I'd really like to give you a couple of tips because I'd really like to see you improve!:
- You do not need to use that many soft pastels! At least on camera, the doll looks incredibly powdery, and I noticed the contour is super dark, especially since this doll is a light pink. Try not putting on so many layers of pastels and also using lighter colors/a lighter hand when putting on contour!
- Getting pencils instead of doing details in acrylic is easier and makes your doll look softer. I noticed the black acrylic on the eyes was way too harsh and it almost looks like her eyes are just black, you can hardly see the yellow.
- You don't need to use that many sprays of matte varnish! The only time it's really used is before you put on pastels, and if your pastel/pencil is rubbing off because you've used too much of it, and of course at the very end just to lock everything into place.
- I suggest getting paint brushes instead of using makeup brushes! It'll make it way easier, makeup brushes are usually more dense and harder to work with!
Of course, you can continue doing what you're doing! If you're happy with it it's all the matters, she still looks great! But as someone who loves repainting dolls and loves watching doll repainting videos, I just wanted to give you some tips to help you improve!
I’ve been doing faceups (commissions) for years and my biggest tip is to use smaller brushes. It will be more precise. Go in with less pastel and build it up. Using a big brush to brush off all that excess will leave muddy layers and that’s why you’re feeling the need to add lighter colours in to even it out.
I think you know this but Monster Highs are not BJDS - not even close. They’re fashion dolls. They are two separate communities that sometimes overlap. I wouldn’t go around saying “other BJDs” when referring to MH as they simply aren’t strung ball jointed dolls.
I commend you for giving it a go and exploring new mediums. She looks lovely.
Do you have any pictures or what not of dolls you've done? I'm trying to find someone I can commission a MH repaint of Elphaba (from wicked) for my mom.
I have a few suggestions for future doll repaints if you decide to do any:
Try to use tones that match the skin, like for this instead of using yellows and browns you could have used darker pinks and purples because of how pink the skin is. Also try not to change the entire skin tone unless you intend on doing it to the whole doll. The head color looked way off compared to the body color and it looked a little weird. It isn't really necessary to do the base coat or the top layer but I do get how it kind of blends it all together and makes it look neater so if you do that in the future please do it to the body too. It takes more time but it makes it look so much cleaner to have the head and body match color. The final thing is don't put down really heavy shadows on a single layer, take baby steps and gradually add more until you get the desired effect. I do have a few things to say about the eyes but this is just personal taste, I think they would look better with a bit of shading to go with the contour and highlights on the face to make the eyes look less flat.
Still though for one of your first doll repaints/face ups it looks really good! I definitely wouldn't be good with the acrylics, my hands are too shaky. XD

I've done some doll repaints myself (including one on the exact same doll! )
And I wanted to give u a couple tips, oki-doki?
Soo,, first off, you can actually re-colour her skin by either using a mixture of acrylic paint and water or use the 'opposite' colour to block her pink skintone (so youd want to take your pastels in green, i think poppen attelier has made a video about this)
I liked the way you contoured her, I usually just blush dolls cuz i think it looks cuter, but her cheekbones look great!
But I'm kinda confused when you made her eyes,, I think the easiest way to make them look natural is by sketching the basic eye shape with a pencil that is near to her skin colour, and then you can add darker colours later on! of course, adding the white to her eyes then will become somewhat harder, but it looks more natural!
Also, to make them look even more realistic, add some fine llines above the eyes ( that will resemble hooded eyes and can look very good on dolls) and also, dont use a dark pencil under her eyes, that will just look very cartoney/anime like! (unless ur going for that, of course!) I always add some 'shadows' on the upper part of the eyes as well because normally, your eyelashes and forehead cast a little shadow over that part of the eye! (that sounded very strange, Sorry english isnt my first language)
Speaking of lashes, adding little fake lashes will make your dolls always look way more realistic!
After finishing the eyes you can add some little white dots to her pupils to archive this light reflection look (you know, when light reflects from your eyes? I'm bad at describing things, sorry)
btw, I loved the eyebrows you gave her!

you can use a moldable eraser for the face
Yes I think knead-able (moldable) erasers are fine for the face, im pretty sure they are actually preferred so that it is easier to erase. If you watch Dollightful she's a youtuber that does a lot of Doll repaints, she has videos that show all the appropriate materials to use. I don't think i'm too reliable but i hoped this helped.

I feel like that doll in particular has a very gruesome origin, there was a major fire at the big top of the Hartford circus in 1944. Back then they coated the big top fabric with wax to make it water repellent, so when it caught fire it was raining molten wax and fabric down on the people performing and the spectators. Even a elephant had to be euthanized because it was so badly burnt. It was a horrific even. So I have to imagine that this dolls "circus theme" melted skin, and flame colored hair are a play on that tragedy. I don't think this was the monster high creator's best choice. But the repaint that you did is really cool. I love the contouring.

Some tips: after using acetone, wash the doll with warm soapy water.
Also Mr. Super Clear works wonders on making the doll's face easier to draw on.
Hold your doll upside down when doing eyebrows! You can spot imperfections easier.

I usually watch Dollightful and her OOAK repaints of monster high she does, she does anything from Halloween, to pokemon, Harajuku girls and just plain cute. I've watched her for a about two years or so now and her process is actually easy enough to follow and learn how to do it yourself. I have a Draculaura somewhere and I would love to make my own doll but I don't have the resources, as of now

This was really nice! Tip: pick up a kneaded eraser from an art store or online and you can remove the pastels super easily that way, even very delicately. A lot easier than adding another color on top to cover it up lmao

colour theory. you need to balance out the shocking pink with some green (i speculate it'll be green to balance it and bring it back to a natural hue)

You can just use a wet wipe to remove a layer of the pastel & allow it to dry & then redo it (That’s the purpose of the spay layers)
I can't tell you how much I have been wishing I could do my own OOAK doll! I can't start on it yet but. if all goes well with my health and last operation, I should soon. Great job for a nube...lol...but seriously, you did everything a beginner does with this redo. Congrats~
You can use a kneaded eraser to pick up pastel in layers if you put to much on so you can lighten it. Of course this wont work if you already sealed it in with spray but it's good to keep in mind if you do this again in the future
God I've wanted BJDs for years. Getting very slowly into doll repaints though.

She looks awesome! One critique I have is that you should move the pupils up a bit so a small portion of the top is cut off. It gives her a more natural look.
If u put on a layer of the oppisite color (on the color wheel) with chalk pastels it will make it a regular skin tone. Also soft pastels are better for this, theu have better pigment pay off.

She turned out fairly well and as someone who has that exact doll (that im too afraid to custom myself), I can tell you that the effort you put in is awesome! I do think it could be better though. Mostly the lack of oranges and red chalk pastels sorta dulled the face especially when the dolls 'skin' was a bright magenta. A tip I can say is to mix the pastels as the brown used for the dark shading was a bit too dark and could have been mixed with a brighter orange not look so muddy.

I used to be SUPER obsessed with Monster High and watched all their movies and episodes. I nearly have all the dolls and i stopped liking them (cuz my parents thought i was too old.. im 12) i secretly want more
Next time I’d suggest picking up the powder straight from the pastels, so it’s not as messy and muddy looking after blending. Think about it, a pressed eyeshadow is easier to apply to a focused area than a loose powder.
Mod podge will turn sticky but like I hate how people dive into this not knowing anything about repainting and thinking it will be EASY. But I'm happy that you did research and watched videos to actually learn.
use chalk pastel pencils or or chunks to create softer blush or blending

You might want to add some contouring and highlights to the body later so the head and body would look like they belong together. Right now she looks a bit like one of those people who use a foundation too light for their skin and forget to blend the rest of the foundation down their neck. But since this is a practice, we have yet to see how she will turn out
