  • Tall driver? Can’t see the speed you’re doing? You need to fit this!
In this short video I fit a H.U.D (head up display) which projects the speed onto the windscreen of the vehicle by taking a signal from the on board diagnostics port. I show you step by step how to remove the parts to complete the job safely.
EDIT SINCE FILMING AND USING THE VAN I CAN CONFIRM THIS IS A GAME CHANGER!
I would not hesitate to recommend these devices to anyone who struggles to see the dials, great view of the speed in light and dark conditions.

i have this HUD for a week now for my pick up truck. this cool little gadget literally served it's purpose and my car looks a lot cooler with it. getting a lot of compliment too.
not to mention for it's relatively cheap price.

Great video Rick, I had a Citroen relay van for work about 8 years ago with this problem so I’ll definitely be fitting one as it looks easy, regarding the showing wire on the dashboard copy one of Ian’s ideas and put a sock over it,( hopefully his doing a video on his fridge/light modification soon) thanks pete

Thanks for sharing Rick, Useful little gadget that one, saves needing to move around to check the speed (which i used to do in previous motorhome, assume would be the same from what you have said), be interesting to know if it makes it more comfortable without having to shuffle about to see the speedo. Got myself one a while back sitting ready to be fitted, good tip not needing to take the other screws out. David 👍

I have installed one of these and it is, indeed, a game changer. Even better than being able to clearly see vehicle speed without taking your eyes off the road is the ability to switch to km/h when driving on the continent. With regard to the wire to the display looking untidy, it is better to run the wire beneath the dash until it is directly under the position you wish to mount the display (with respect to the forward longitudinal axis of the vehicle) and then run a short "vertical" (ie longitudinal) wire to the unit. In my van I have mounted the unit more centrally and both the unit itself and the connecting wire are invisible from the driver's seat (or anywhere else in the cab).

Thanks for that Rick 👍going over to Amazon now. Previously we had a Boxer that didn't seem to be a problem but since changing to a Ducato I do find the speedo difficult to see. Cheers and Take Care Steve & Janet 👍👍🙂

Great little video Rick, may have to invest in one for the 75 if it keeps a eye on temperature and speed. Used to have a scan guage in my Mini which done the same sort of thing but this looks like a much cheaper option.

fitted the exact one to my ducato based swift escape 674 last night before i saw your video. i fitted it for the same reasons, i am 6'4" and struggle to see the speedo when driving, hopefully this will make a big difference and keep me legal lol. fitting was simplicity itself! i've put mine directly in the middle of the instrument pod but there there is enough wire to have it wherever suits you

@@RickandHeather definitely a game changer, used it for the first time on a trip from the midlands to cornwall and it was invaluable, no longer needing to look down at the speedo, just glance at the windscreen. compared it to google maps speedo and it was accurate. best 30 quid upgrade i've spent. it did stay turned on when on the campsite on hookup and solar so can only assume it gets power when the voltage is high from the charging, didn't cause an issue though and turns of when its in storage undercover and i've turned the ignition key to isolate the starter battery

Don't know why, but this just popped up while I was scrolling through. Hopefully you took it with you to Athena. I had the same problem, but I'm a thrfty Scot so trawled around and found one on eBay for £7.99 that just plugs into the USB socket in the glovebox and the cable runs up the side to a small LCD display that I stuck on the dashboard. Very visible to me and my Co-Pilot. At the price I paid if it lasts a few years I'll be quite happy, the one you fitted looks very good, doesn't use up a USB socket either and I'll probably get one at a later date. Cheers and happy camping from Bonnie Scotland..

I'm tall as well. It's a real pain to keep trying to look through the steering wheel. I also like the fact that you can switch it over to kilometres per hour, if your heading into Europe. Instead of trying to look at the tiny KPH numbers.
