  • Using data densification accomplished through a full outer join, you can create a headcount chart over time with just a start and end date. Can be applied any time you need a total count but only have a start / end date.

Thanks a lot for this video, I was able to get the rolling counts, but not by department before this video. I'm wondering now that the rows of start date and first of month is sort of 'mismatched', how can you build a chart counting number of new start and number of people finish each month without starting a new tableau file?

Take a look at this video. It doesn't answer your question directly, but it will give you the basic framework you'll need. You will need two different FIXED statements. Now that I think about it, the video might not answer your question. The answer will depend on how your data is structured. czcams.com/video/NEOc9GMklZM/video.html

@@TableauWeston thanks for the link, I had a look at it...just wonder if there is any simpler ways of doing things. I ended up doing something simple, because I didn't need a line chart, but was after the number of people joined and left within 6 or 12 months. I did calculated field of employeeId left within 6months: IF [Termination Date] > DATE(DATETRUNC('month',DATEADD('month',-6,TODAY())))
      THEN [fake_employee_id]
END and then did a countD on it. Same for the new starts: IF [Start Date] > DATE(DATETRUNC('month',DATEADD('month',-6,TODAY())))
      THEN [fake_employee_id]
END and countD of it. Just numbers that can change with filters of departments.

@@enyacat7 LOL - I'm not sure if there is a simpler solution or not, I tend to make things more difficult than they need to be. If your method works, run with it. Glad you found a solution that works for you.
