INDEX Function - TABLEAU Fundamentals
The INDEX function is often overlooked, but I want to show you three ways I use the INDEX function. My favorite way is to use INDEX with a scatterplot to spread out, or jitter, the data points. This is a table calculation, so it can be tricky to get the function to work properly.

When you add shapes to your custom settings would everyone else in my office be able to see them in there tableau?
Everyone will be able to see the shapes in your published dashboard. If someone were to go into the actual Tableau file, they would need access to where the image was stored for it to be visible.
Thank you, this was very helpful 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Hi,i tried this to toggle dashboards using 3 navigations inside a vertical object n created a show/hide button on that vertical , but when i click on one navigation n dashboard is opened, the button is still keeps showing all the 3 navigations , like a drop down remains opened I’m doing this because my dashboard doesn’t have space to add 3 navigation button side by side
I haven't tried embedding show/hide buttons in vertical containers. I've always changed the show/hide button images to a information icon, and it seems to work for my end users.
when I use Null, the whole chart disappears
Where are you using the NULL?
Thanks for the Nice Video
Thanks for watching!
Dear Weston, Kindly attached here dataset too for same practice purpose.
I'm not sure how to attach a dataset to CZcams. You can easily re-create the data set with an Excel file with Location, Date, and Quantity.
Thank you! This was helpful for the vizz I'm making
Glad it was helpful and glad you were able to follow along. Fairly complex way of approaching your data.
Helpful
Glad you think so!
would be more helpful if you started blank.
You might be right. This is a difficult for people to understand, at least it was for me. Someone explained it with pre-existing containers and it worked for me, so I took the same approach. Hopefully you found something useful in the video.
Thanks for Sharing
My pleasure. I hope it helped you on your journey.
Thanks for the video! What if I need to show the KPI1 and KPI2 but not the KPI3? I'm using many measures and my idea is to show by groups, for ex. If I select the group A it will show me from KPI 1 to KPI 4, but if I select the group D it will also show me its KPIs
Look at the formula at time stamp 2:32. You can add as many IF/ELSEIF scenarios that you want. For example, ELSEIF [KPI selector]="Group D" then sum([field]). You would add this logic to all the fields in Group D. Let me know if that doesn't help.
Nice video
Thanks for watching.
Weston -- thanks so much for this insight! Question -- do you know how to pass multiple parameters to a dashboard that has two or more filters? Thanks!
I don't know off the top of my head. I assume you would replicate the pattern used for one parameter.
With any extension can this functionality of leaving a default table for download be added? If you have any information to apply it in tableau public I would appreciate it
Good question. I haven't worked with extensions, so I can't answer that question.
Thank You Sir
Most welcome
hi, is there a way to make the scroll automatedly? Background: I have a table dashboard that is published on the tableau server, then shows as a google chrome webpage on a large monitor, my users want to be able to see the whole table (about a few hundreds rows), if scrolling to the end then automatedly start from the beginning and loop. Is this achievable?
I'm not aware of any way to synchronize any scrolling across multiple visuals. Admittedly, this was a work around and a bit clunky.
Really cool., Thanks Weston. Can you please guide me how to change the "DATEPART('quarter', [Start date])" to just "Qtr" i tried the way you told, but not working. Please guide. Thank you.
There may be an issue with the formula, or it could be the type of information you are trying to get. Are you trying to get 1, 2, 3, 4 for the quarter?
I've data in excel and want to present its graphs and visual in PPT, which tableau should i buy?
If you want to create anything, you'll need the Creator License. A good, cheap option is to get Tableau Public. You can link to Excel data sources and create charts and graphs. You won't be able to copy/paste images of your visuals, but if you do a screen shot you should be okay.
hi, is there a way to make the scroll arrows appear vertically?
I'm not aware of any. This is a bit of a hack, so maybe in the future Tableau will roll this out as a feature.
I expected the bar chart and data to be in one worksheet
Unfortunately, you can only have one item per worksheet. Dashboards are used for combined various worksheets together.
Super helpful with a work task I had, thanks!
Glad it helped!
that was a nice map. I have an idea to make the map look like a Google Map, but I don't know how to configure it
Tell me more. Are you using an image of a Google Map?
@TableauWeston, thank you for your response and question. To address your inquiry, no, I currently do not use Google Maps integration because I am unfamiliar with the process. However, I am actively researching ways to incorporate Google Maps into Tableau. On another note, I am creating a personal CV portfolio in Tableau, and to showcase the locations where I have worked, I aim to include an interactive map.
@@tahirtahirzade5051 I'm not sure how to integrate with Google Maps either, so if you figure it out please let me know. I've seen a couple interesting resumes done in Tableau. They look cool, but I'm not sure how practical they are for actually getting a job. Good luck.
Thanks for your informative videos. I hope you will upload such videos in future as well
Thank you for watching. Is there something you are interested in seeing?
Hi Palmer, This was a very interesting video. The First day of the month is correct but I have a small suggestion. Kindly update the title of this video to "Tableau Tutorial - Calculate the First Day of current Month/ Last Day of the Previous Month (DATETRUNC, DATEADD)" . The current formula shown in this video for the "Last Day of the Month" will return the Last Day of the Previous Month not the current Month. If the title cannot be corrected then please correct the video content to show the correct Last Day of the Month. If we need the Last Day of current Month we need to make use of the below formula in the Filters shelf and select True. DAY([DATEADD('day',1, [Order Date])])=1. This is just a friendly suggestion!!! BTW you got yourself a new subscriber 😀👍 Regards, Deepak.
Thanks for the suggestion. I discover things I know are helpful, but sometimes struggle with the titles. Thanks for subscribing!
Can you do it with a pie chart? I want it to display the target
I don't believe pie charts can have reference lines. If you want to show targets for the various slices, I would create a separate "target" pie chart and either display them side-by-side or overlay them using a dual axis.
Love the video very helpful! What would the formula look like if you wanted the details behind the 109 and not the 393 in the tool tip? How would you do that?
Are you wanting to see the details for the particular category, like Furniture? In that case, just passing "Category" through the filter in the embedded visual should work. Feels like I'm misunderstanding the question. Please let me know what I'm missing.
Prof Weston you have a wonderful voice and explain the LOD fixed function with date example very clearly, thank you from India.
I am still finding a solution for First and Last date case statement for e.g. IF ISNULL([touchpoint_date]) THEN "Date Null" ELSEIF (MAX[touchpoint_date]) THEN 'Last Touch' ELSEIF (MIN[touchpoint_date]) THEN 'First Touch' ELSE 'Mult Touch' END
Thank you for the kind words. I think you want to compare the [touchpoint_date] to the First Touch and the Last Touch. I recommend first creating two LOD calculated fields. {FIXED:MAX(touchpoint_date)} as the Last Touch, and {FiXED:MIN(touchpoint_Date)} as the first date. Then use those calculated fields in the IF-THEN calculation.
You may need to add additional dimensions to the FIXED calculation. For example, if you only want the Last Touch date for a vendor, product, store location, etc. , then put them in the FIXED calculation like {FIXED vendor, product, storelocation:MAX(touchpoint_Date)}. I hope that helps. Check out my other LOD videos.
Thanks so much for the video. For some reason I can not seem to see the source field in mine. It just says none. Would you know what the issue is?
The title is a little confusing (at least to me :( ). Can you explain a little more about which source field you are not able to see?
Thank you so much for the response. So to give you a background I am trying to reset all filters which incöude 2 parameter range date filters. I have found a way to reset the regular filters, i am now trying to use the same button to reset parameters to the dates when the workbook opens eg. 01-01-2023 - 20-12-2023. I am not even sure if that is possible
@@Syzemic This will be pretty complicated. I think you would need two parameters - one for the start date and one for the end date. Follow the video to set the parameters to a new value. I'm not sure if you can set the parameter to the value of another parameter. Depending on what you are trying to accomplish, you may suggest the dashboard user to select the "Refresh" button (a Tableau default) rather than trying to create a separate filter.
@@thegrabbag4304 Yeah I thought so as well. Just from a ux prospective its better if we have one apply all button and one reset button. Also the reset button remains selected when you click it so you have to click it twice, seems a bit buggy.
hello sir i have been looking for this dashboard for a long time Thank You so much .Sir what if i filter the bar char is percent of total What precautions i shall be taking . If Possible can i have dataset ?
If the bar chart is showing the percent of the total, chances are the filter won't work because the percent of total is a table calculation that will not link to a specific field value. Do you have a location where you want the data set sent?
When I add Totals at the bottom of my tables it add in the other names, how can I show totals and subtotals?
Under the Analysis menu, select Totals, then "Add All Sub-totals". You will then need to right click the dimension (blue bill) to unselect the sub-totals you don't want.
Here's a link to my Tableau Public profile where I've used this logic with basketball shots. public.tableau.com/app/profile/weston.palmer/viz/2023-24ZachBasketballStats/StatSheet
Cross tab is not working
Is Cross Tab option greyed out, or is the format off when you export to Excel?

You're welcome!
This is marvelous, very much appreciated
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching.
What tool did you use to create the image?
I believe I used Excel and shaded the cells, then used the snipping tool. You could use PowerPoint as well. I liked Excel because I felt I could easily make the cells the same size horizontally and vertically. Good luck. Thanks for asking.
This worked for me.. thanks for the video... 😊😊
Glad it helped!

How to Make Box Smaller Inside the Dashboard
Unfortunately, because the menu items show up in the tool tips, I'm not aware of a way to adjust the size. However, the latest versions of Tableau have a hide/show button on contains, which will give you a lot more flexibility. Look up my video on hide/show buttons.
Can you show an example of how you would add in more filters to the calculation?
To add more filters to the FIXED function, add them between "FIXED" and the colon. Like this {FIXED [dim1],[dim2],[dim3]:SUM([Measure])}
Thank you, Weston! I was stuck in similar requirement and tried Exclude even but the way you did is amazing and solved my request. Thank you, again!!
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching and letting me know the video was helpful.
@@TableauWeston - Hi Weston! I used your steps for my Report where I wanted to exclude entire site's user if one of the category is deselected from Category filter for which that site was restricted. But I can not show them as BAN for final dashboard and create a map chart to show unique users by province because it calculates Unique users by Site ID in FIXED LOD formula. So if I remove Site ID from the view, nothing is showing on the report. Is there a way to show BAN and Map chart?
@@user-li4wz8st6l If you are looking for the unique user count on a map, would you even need to use the FIXED function? I would need to look at some sample data, maybe even a packaged workbook. Unfortunately, it sounds more involved and will require some research. Feel free to support me through Patreon or reach out via Linked in for a separate contract.
Thank you!! I didn't expect that splitting a bar based on a parameter is that easy!
Glad you learned something. Now you can apply the concept to a variety of other situations.
All time I keep in mind your tip, that your found with renaming. Thanks for it, Weston!
Happy to help! Thanks for letting me know.
OMG is Tableau frustrating. Thank you for this video! The conversion of seconds to a decimal then formatting as a date, who would have known?!?!
LOL. I make these videos because they are problems I've run into and had to research myself. Glad to know someone else has had the same problem.
Now I have to validate my 180 day calculations. Thank you.
Sorry. :) Once you figure out the impact and if you really want to do it by days or by months, your customer should be fine.
Just what I needed.
Perfect. If you have other ideas, please let me know.
so useful video..thnxx
Glad you liked it. Thanks for letting me know.
Thanks for the tutorial! I've managed to replicate your process with 6 levels. Now I want to add percentages to each box to show the % of the value that the size represents out of the total for each level. Any ideas on how I can achieve that?
Wow! 6 levels, I would never have imagined it. You may be able to add the value to the label card and change it to % of total (quick table calculation). If that doesn't work, you might have a messy calculation on your hands.
Great video! Is there a way to have two color cells and one white cell? Example, green for over, red for under, and white for even?
Not that I know of. This is the only way I've found to include white. Tableau, if you're listen, add white to the color palette for discrete items, please.
Missing some context here. How did you get to the hover chart. I understand, but it too me a minute to realize it. Some people may not.
Sorry about that. I try to show everything in one continuous shot, but sometimes I edit things out to keep things faster pace. I must have cut too much. Thanks for the feedback and for watching.
