My son was born 11/28/75. In 76 we were living in Boston. My son was in the back seat in his car seat and this song came on the radio. At six months old this was the first song he jammed to. Fast forward this past Christmas we got his son this album. Timeless memories.
Great Story! 😊 My oldest daughters first song was the Rolling Stones. From the back seat I hear "Can't Get No....Can't Get No" 😁
i was gonna say..
it may not have been popular in the rest of the states
but in boston it was in constant airplay on wbcn
I'm from Boston too! I was in highschool when this album came out. I had a 67 mustang and I had this in 8 track. This song brings back so many memories.✌️❤️
Love your story! I'm 11/27/71, from MA, always loved TP & the HBs! My aunt's favorite so we grew up saying Uncle Tom ❤
Tom Petty has one of the most impressive catalogues in American rock history. He was, and remains, a LEGEND. This is why he was also a Wilbury.
“Tell me you’re not driving down the highway just blasting this.”
Silence of the Lambs would agree.
Absolute best part of that movie.
You can't go wrong with Tom Petty. He wrote the soundtrack to my life, and I cried when he died.
Me too. I went to see Wilco that night in Austin. An amazing show. Then I got home and found out and I cried all night.
I still cry today at the loss of Tom Petty. The license plate on my car is a tribute to him. I listen to him daily on SiriusXM channel 31, Tom Petty Radio .
Oh girl…same. 😔
I’m 70, and Tom Petty is always in heavy rotation on any playlist. His voice, and laid back coolness, never gets old. Would love to hear Breakdown and You Got Lucky❤️❤️❤️
THOSE SONGS.....omg, soundtrack to my youth, high scool, college, my first true love. SO GOOD. RIP, Tom Petty...you were loved, you are missed.
Tom Petty seems like the kind of guy you can sit down with and just have a chat. No BS, no bragging, just a guy that lives next door :)
* Seemed and Lived. RIP Tom Petty.
This and Breakdown are my two favorite Tom Petty songs by a mile.
Breakdown! 👍🇺🇸
Totally agree 👍
Jon Scott begged the label's CEO to give him six weeks to get the album moving.
He went on a relentless campaign to get Breakdown played.
It finally peaked at #40 on the charts, and that was enough for the label to greenlight a second album.
Love this song. He had so many great hits.
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are legendary! Tom got swag! Love em!
Tom Petty, epic songwriter, epic person-RIP. One of my favorite Petty songs, it is iconic-no question.
You just heard part of this song in your Silence Of Lambs review
Can you imagine being a hungry, young artist who achieves the dream of getting a record deal, goes into the studio with his buds knowing they HAVE to deliver the goods, then capturing these songs which become classics? How amazing is that? You have to have the guts to take that shot. Good to see you enjoying Tom and company so much. Miss him.
For more from Tom, check out "Here Comes My Girl," "The Waiting," "Don't Do Me Like That," and more!
Here comes my Girl and Even the Losers are couple of my favorites
Just a bit of trivia. This song was in the movie
“Silence of the Lambs” Not sure if that helped
in the popularity but it took off after, so…..
Love Tom Petty. I agree about wanting more Salvo!
and Fast Times At Ridgemont High
I’m 63, I love his music…my kids are in their 30’s, they love his music…my grandson is 21, he loves their music. Even my mother in her 80’s would bop around a bit to his music. He’s timeless…he’s legendary…he’s a Travelling Wilbury 🇨🇦🖖🏻
Lovin' me some Tom Petty. He was so damn good and loved. He is missed and will always be cherished. He left us with a musical treasure. Great show ❤
“Listen To Her Heart”, “I Need To Know”, “Here Comes My Girl”, “Don’t Do Me Like That” are some of their best!
TP & the Heartbreakers had the audacity 😄to put blazing guitar solos at the END of their songs. The best way to hear them played out? Live performances of course. Mike Campbell is the stellar guitarist and never fails to deliver the absolute cleanest solos and riffs.
I always loved his music, and when he died prematurely due to his issues I was so sad. I also enjoyed him as part of the Traveling Wilburys.
Probably my favorite singer/songwriter/band of all time (bar Ray Charles). Tom may be the best American songwriter we have had.
BREAKDOWN/MARY JANE"S LAST DANCE/RUNNING DOWN A DREAM/LEARNING TO FLY/ SOUTHERN ACCENT/ Mr. Policeman (Don't pull me over)./I won't back down,/ FREE FALLING/ TOP OF THE WORLD/ WALLS
❤It is hard to believe this didn't chart immediately. It was all over the radio.
Oh, darlin! This is a classic drive down the highway song. We all know every nuance., every note.....it was fun, fun, fun! Thank you!
Tom Petty is one of my favorite artists and this might be my favorite Tom Petty song. Thanks!
TPaTH - more than 40 years together! Check out Runnin Down a Dream for some more great Mike Campbell riffs, and Fault Lines from their last album.
Everything he did was gold; he has that Dylan-esque voice. I saw Tom Petty with Bob Dylan at Pine Knob in MI and Bob Segar came out and did a surprise encore with them, it was an awesome show.
Awesome show in Seattle as well.
Watching you discover all this great music that is the fabric of my life is such a gift. Thank you for being you.
Saw them in concert back in the day. No fancy lights, no special effects, just awesome music!!!
Same! Saw him back in the 90’s at Jones beach theater. Went for a swim before the concert, almost drowned but it didn’t stop me from going to the concert 😂best day ever!
His second album was Damn the Torpedoes and had multiple top songs and sold millions. Breakdown was the first song I heard of his and has always been one of my favorites.
This is such a bop. ❤️ Also, featured during the kidnapping scene in Silence of the Lambs. It always sticks with me 😬😄
I was wondering if someone would mention the movie, it always sticks with me too. Kinda like I can’t hear ‘stuck in the middle with you’ and not think of Reservoir dogs
Anyway, love this song ❤
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers are in my Top 5 favorite bands of all time! This is actually one of my favorite songs! Dude, many are not aware but Tom was an amazing person as well as an Artist and helped many other artist as well.
This always comes on at night while I am driving in my car alone. Yes, I sing along and think about The Silence of the Lambs.
And we don’t stop to help strange men with vans anymore!
The first Tom Petty song I heard, and still my favorite! Great reaction.
…..miss you Mr. Tom Petty ❤️ his music was the soundtrack to my childhood 🙏🏻
If they had a signature song,it was this one. They plated it at every concert for 40 years.
It was the last live song Tom played,in his life.
tom and the heartbreakers first 3 albums are the songs that i return to - the soundtrack of adolescence and burgeoning adulthood.
tom's plaintive, passionate vocals immediately plug you into connection with the songs, you innately feel their drive ❤
other great songs to check out:
breakdown
the wild one, forever
anything that's rock 'n roll
don't do me like that
here comes my girl
louisiana rain
you tell me
the waiting
casa dega [my most favourite]
i think you already covered "refugee" but if not, that is another must-hear banger.
i miss you every day, tom ❤💋
Around 2005 I saw Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers in concert in Kansas City. It was really a perfect concert.
My all time favorite Petty song!!
This song is infectious.
The songs on this album were short due to radio play at the time. Tom was writing hits for radio. It wasn't until he became established that his songs got longer.
"God, it's so painful, something that's so close
Is still so far out of reach"...GAHHHH that hits like a Mac truck. LOVE this song!
This album and Damn the Torpedoes are my two favorite TP albums. I met him in a small club in San Francisco and he was so genuine. Love this reaction!!
This song is such a perfect slice of Americana but I always liked 'breakdown' from this album. 🔥
I think they play this song in movie Fast times at ridgemont high also. Graduated in late seventies, great song
❤❤ Tom Petty & The Heartreakers ❤❤
Amazingly, lead guitarist Mike Campbell modestly said he was not all that crazy about that rocking riff at the end but the rest of the band did...so it stayed in. What a humble guy. A great guitarist because he plays in a way that shows he really feels the music.
Love Tom Petty. Another icon left us too soon. Heaven must be making awesome music with all the best of the best there❤
Mike Campbell is one of the most underrated guitarists ever… 🙏🏻
My absolute favorite Petty.
Pretty much love everything he did. Lots of his songs are on my private playlist. “Breakdown” would be good to hear. ♥️🇺🇸
First scene in Silence of the Lambs
BEST ROCK BAND OF ALL TIME
one of my favorites by Tom Petty is called " you don't know how it feels"
Great tune. Their absolute signature song and best rocker is ‘Refugee’!
I love this song. Thanks SalvoG. Hugs from Oz
This always reminds me of Silence of the Lambs. Its played when the daughter is riding and jamming in her car. Classic.
Now that's Rock and Roll!!!
AMERICAN ROCK is what this song is - Def my all time TP song with Don't Come Around Here a close 2nd.
Love it. I dig all of Tom's music, but the old Heartbreakers stuff is just extra special to me. Part of the soundtrack of my youth.
Don't Do Me Like That
Breakdown
Refugee
You Got Lucky
Here Comes My Girl
The Waiting
Even The Losers
Those are just a few of the more well known ones, each one of them killer songs.
I’m in NJ by the shore. Since my early 20’s 20+ years now I have been going to beach bars with live music cover bands and this is probably one of the most covered songs. Every band plays this and it’s great. One band I love changes the words to roads in NJ and changes American Girl into Jersey Girl at the end. After 3 hours of drinking and dancing this becomes a massive 200-300 person sing along. So much fun
Small venue, saw this first Tour. Tom and The Heartbreakers just killed it. Knew they were destined for greatness as they were already a well oiled machine. Imho, it is Tom’s best, pure straight ahead Hard Rock…
The live version of U Wreck Me and Mary Jane's Last Dance are great fun songs. So many songs he has are fantastic.
Refugee and Here Comes My Girl Breakdown live 1985 version is great as well
Refugee and Learning to Fly (live version) are my favs.
When they first came out, their music sounded like a throwback to the mid-60's, good-time rock'n'roll. Very reminiscent of the Byrds with the jangly electric 12-string. In fact they did some Byrds' covers, like Feel a Whole Lot Better. The guitarist, Mike Campbell, is an unsung hero. Petty played rhythm.
Mike Campbell is one of my favorite guitarists. He just seems to know what to play at the moment. Far from an unsung hero. Those that know the band know that he is often Tom’s co-writer and was his sidekick in just about everything he did including solo work and side projects (Travelling Wilburys). Also wrote for others (Don Henley’s Boys Of Summer)
This is where I start and probably end when I'm in a Petty state of mind. Huge library of music history.
" Running Down a Dream " or a cover of " Something in the Air "
I like this one but Mary Jane's Last Dance is my favorite. And the official music video is fun.
That's my second favorite. ❤
Now we're talking. Been a fan since this album dropped.
One of the big three backing bands (The Heartbreakers, The E Street Band and The Silver Bullet Band).
That guitar the end was Mike Campbell. He's suxh an underrated guitarist.
Refugee will always be my favorite but TP had a ton of great songs, with the Heartbreakers, Super Group The Traveling Wilburys and a really good duet with Stevie Nicks!
At the end was Mike Campbell's work,as was all the rest of the guitar.
ohhhh I remember this one !!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!
Bonnie Mountain,in Gainesville, says that some of AG is based on her, because of an incident that happened on a balcony.
One day,she looked out at the clothesline, and, saw that her American flag crop top was missing. She knew who took it.
They'd been teen sweethearts, but, couldn't get past her strict daddy.
Hold my Beer while I Bump my Tambourine! :-D
Mike Campbell lit the match at the end .
The studio version on the debut album WAS faded out too soon. The original recording was longer, and it's on the Damn the Torpedoes documentary about the album.
They played the original longer version at their RNRHOF induction ceremony

Deeeeeeeeep rabbit hole to go down, Salvo! Continue with "Breakdown" & "Refugee" before moving into the 80s stuff.
"Ohhh, somebody lit a match at the end!" SO well put, Salvo. Tom and the band consistently produced terrific music, but this song and "Breakdown", (from this same album), just were infused with a little somethin' extra. Though "Breakdown" is very different in feel, it really sizzles...and can still curl my toe nails to this day. And you're right--it's a great looking album cover.
Good! 🎶
"Runnin' Down A Dream" live if you like Rockin' Tom Petty.
That's a classic Southern accent, Florida style, ha! I have it, too. He was our guy. Hopeful next play, the song ,"Southern Accent", for a deeper dive. Lyrically, it's like a folk song, it's about actually, us- people from there. " Got my own way of talking, and everything is done, with a Southern accent where I come from."
Yep.
Breakdown my favorite cut on this album….a song with that very mid/late 70’s vibe….
A Woman in Love from Hard Promises
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Great, now I have to rewatch Scrubs!
My opinion, this is his best song. Not sure why it didn't chart higher than it did??
Aren’t we lucky to have been alive in Tom Petty’s lifetime?
The deeper you dig into Tom Petty’s catalog the more you’ll appreciate his songwriting and you’ll come to appreciate how great a guitarist Mike Campbell is. Don’t react to just the “hits”. His catalog is full of great deep cuts: Love Is A Long Road, Wildflowers, You Wreck Me, Kings Highway, Insider (with Stevie Nicks), Here Comes My Girl, Woman In Love. All these are deeper cuts and every one is an excellent song.
Tom Petty, get in quick, get it done, no extra ornamentation and leave them wanting more. Oh yeah, make a song you can listen over and over.
I was sitting on the ledge of an apartment that faced a busy street im Vancouver BC
I was 15 In 79 I remember the first time I heard Tom Petty Refugee -Damn the Torpedos
That entire ALBUM was great
A couple good ones, not as popular
•You Got Lucky
•Full Grown Boy
I am an 🇺🇸👩!❤🔥❤
Odd to think that this wouldn’t kick off the album.
Try "you got lucky" I believe you'd appreciate it... slower, deeper...
Crikey, not heard this for years
I can't hear this song and not think of Silence of the Lambs...
Check out the live version from Pack Up the Plantation, Live! Much better live, IMO.
Huh…I didn’t see that poll. Was it in the community section or was it VIP tier only?

Have fun falling down the Tom Petty rabbit hole.
Don’t you feel like it takes away from a true “first time reaction” when you do all of that research ahead of listening to the song? It pretty much ruins it for me. You’ve taken most of the surprise out of it. I’ve seen no other channel that does that.
