  • Are Vogue Very Easy Options Sewing Patterns very easy?
Yes these patterns are definitely a go to sewing pattern for beginners.
In this video I sew Vogue V9328 and it was an easy sewing pattern to follow it was just a very hard time in my life so it took a lot longer then I thought its would but here it is finally completed.
This dress is is a floor length cottage core style dress with pockets that I absolutely lov. I can't wait to sew this pattern again and see if it is easier when I am feeling better. But overall to was a great sewing pattern and I hope you enjoy watching me sew this dress.

Purchased bias tape was very common in the 60's when I learned to sew. I hated it in 1964, and I still hate it in 2024, so your comments were spot on in my book. I prefer 1) make my own, 2) draft a facing, 3) my favorite... make a lining.

Made clothes for myself and children until I was about 40. I worked full time as an RN and had eight children. By the time I had baby 8 when I was 42, something had to go. That was the sewing. Now 70 and just starting sewing again. I always have problems with purchased patterns and matching front and back, sleeves etc. Fitting yourself is not easy either

When you have to ease things (like your Princess seams - with one piece slightly larger than the other) make sure you sew it with the larger piece under and the smaller piece on top. The feed dogs will move the lower fabric a tiny bit faster than the top piece which just slides under the Sewing foot.

I’m so glad you are sewing this beautiful dress. This is just a suggestion, when trying your mock up, do it with the bra you’re planning to wear. The sweater being worn below can distort the fitting.

Notched edges always get sewn to something else, in this case the sleeve. I don't know what's going on with the directions. You did a BEAUTIFUL job on this dress! "Easy Options" is meaningless words, like "No-Wax-Floor".

Wear it for day of the dead. Cinco de Mayo. May 5th.
You are doing great, I appreciate hearing from other ladies who are figuring out how to sew for yourself. I gave sewn for years but struggle making clothes for myself. Keep going and you will get this.
On work life balance, it's hard. Prioritize what matters most. I was a single parent and military. If your job is not providing basics it is not #1 or 2. If your employer understands that you work because you choose to they will be more reasonable.
Now i need to look for that pattern...it looks amazing on you!

I'm so glad you're feeling better. I managed to get the plague just before Halloween, so no parties for me. Plus my partner and my best friend got it, too. So we had a sick household for the last 3 weeks. But all better now, though that dang couch is hanging on a while longer.
With your sewing, I know you're concerned about doing things correctly, so first of all I want to tell you that, for the most part, you are. Yeah there a things you don't understand right now, but that comes with practice. One thing I tell stitchers is something my last sewing teacher told our class every time we started a new pattern. Read the instructions through completely 3 times. The first time is to familiarize yourself with some the steps. Most you will know, but others look unfamiliar. Take a highlighter and mark any instruction you are unsure of. Then when you've read them all, set them down and walk away. Do something else for a little while that doesn't concern sewing. This gives your brain time to ruminate on what you read. The when you come back and read them a second time just sit down and read them again, especially those parts you're unsure of, to see if they make sense this time. Make notes on the instructions, highlight any more tricky spots, and otherwise just see what's what. If there's a technique just you don't understand, look it up. I suggest a sewing manual, especially if it's an older one from the 40s or 50s. They have more information that newer sewing manuals. I have several form the 40s, 50s, and 70s. You can sometimes find them in used bookstores, or sometimes online. Threads Magazine is a good resource for a lot of different techniques. One of their contributors teaches at F.I.T. Plus they have a CZcams channel you can subscribe to. (Something I highly recommend.) Plus maybe get a subscription to their magazine. My sewing teacher called the magazine her "continuing education." Then the third time you read the instructions should be when you are actually sewing the garment. By this time you should be familiar enough with them to anticipate some of the steps.
About the numbering of the pattern pieces. Did you realize that each piece is numbered according to when in the instructions you'll be using it them. Piece 1 is in the first instruction, then you add that to piece 2 in the second instruction, and so on. I've been sewing for over 50 years and I only realized that about 5 years ago. Oh, and you're so right about the actual amount of time spent sewing. My sewing teacher also told us that we would only spend about 10 percent of our time at the machine. The rest would be cutting, pinning, clipping/grading, etc. at the cutting table or ironing.
All in all, the dress came out fantastic. There are a lot of recommendations I could make about some of the parts where you were questioning yourself and your choices, but they'd all be too long for this already too long comment. The bias binding looks good. Yeah, so you didn't do it according to the instructions. That means you just needed fold the neck edge over a little more to compensate. Honestly, the busyness of the fabric print makes it hard to see if anything is totally wrong. And as to whether you should have done the B-cup size I will say, unequivocally, no. You choose correctly. The fit is good from what I can see. The good thing about these multiple cup size patterns is that now folks don't have to do either a FBA (Full Bust Adjustment) or an SBA (Small BA) unless they are way off from those cup sizes. If you want a better idea of basic patterns and different style adjustments, I suggest you check out The Closet Historian. Bianca really helps folks understand how style lines are decided on and how the garment is then made. In her earlier videos she shows how to make basic bodice and skirt blocks. She's a great instructor, though she would tell you otherwise. She's quite humble and when speaking she has a very matter of fact delivery style.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this. It’s full of great information. For some reason I never read the instructions until I’m actually sewing the dress. I literally read them as I go for the first time. I will most certainly be taking your advice and reading them more then once and highlighting and making notes! Such a great tip! I’m glad you all are feeling better!

  • @FantasticalFolliesCostuming

This dress is gorgeous and you look amazing in it. I think you did A+ with the fit.
Regarding the pattern...this is more gothic/lolita than hardcore Halloween, so you could totally pull it off "everyday," if you wanted. I recently made a gunne sax dress that's a dinosaur taco print. Everyone compliments me on it...and most of the time, they don't even register what the print is until I (very enthusiastically) point it out. Take that as you will 😁
Also, so glad to see you persevering through your schedule changes and sickness. Hang in there. 🧡

YOU DID AN AWESOME JOB!!!!! As far as the darts go, they were not noticeable on the finished dress, [which BTW you could definitely wear any time!!] on your mock-up the side darts were a lil high they should point to the nipple area. I HIGHLY recommend Biancia at The Closet Historian on youtube She is amazing with darts and has several videos on them. Keep up the great work!!! Life is a balance, and you will find yours.

    • @ladyflimflam
      @ladyflimflam Před rokem +1

Yes, the darts should be repositioned. Remember to wear the bra you will wear with the dress when you do your fitting. Different bras will shape and position our breasts differently and that can effect where the dart should be. It looked like there was some excess fabric in the midriff in your final product so you may want to taper the waist a bit depending on how you like your clothes to fit. Moving the dart may be enough to take care of that, though, especially if you use a heavier bodied fabric for the next version.

I prefer a double folded bias tape, super easy to work with, requires stitching it on, folding it over and stitching it again... i agree with you, I feel I am sitting on the floor, cutting, trimming, pinning, un-picking lol, etc. more than actually sitting at the machine. • @BurntToastStars

My advice re: fitting garments. Pick one area to focus on getting the right fit. It will probably take a couple garments before you start to notice that you have to make the same adjustments over and over. For example, I have a very round tummy, so I KNOW that I will need to add an inch to the waist. Once I started getting the fit on my tummy done right, I added another area of concern. So then I started making sure my bodice was wide enough AND long enough (I also have a long torso).
Anyways! Basically just take it one area at a time, that way you don’t get overwhelmed and start making a ton of changes to your pattern. 😁

It turned out great! Half of sewing is preparation, and the other half is problem solving😂. Embrace bias binding - watch some videos and practice on scraps. I have replaced facings with bias binding because I hate facings with a passion. Use your machine to create basting (long 4-length stitches) guide lines at your seam allowance (5/8”) - or mark your seam allowances with chalk (I find basting simpler and quicker, and can be easily removed). Use this guide line to match up with the fold of a bias binding, and stitch down with normal stitch length of 2.5. Trim excess fabric, and then sew bias binding closed by top stitching it. I use basted guide lines for everything, from bias binding guide lines to rolled hem guidelines. They’re also easy to un-pick out (or Britney J Jones leaves them there, in her recent videos). I like that this pattern only has the back zipper half way, meaning I can undo my dress by myself. Thanks, I have this pattern and will finally pull it out and sew it up.

Thank you! And I definitely think this is a one or two day pattern and worth it. Mine fit a little loose in the bust I could have done the b instead of c and I’m a 36 D in bra size

Bias tape is such a bugger. It's taken me a while to get it to a decent outcome and use. Professor Pincushion has a good tutorial on CZcams.

Hi Drew-I’m new to your channel. I love your calm voice and the pattern you chose!
You may have already heard about this from other viewers but I learned a lot about sewing and fit from MimiG’s Sew It Academy and by being getting a Patreon account with Gertie from Charm Patterns. Just an idea.

I love them both! My problem, we’ll one of my problems is I am so impatient. I’ve learned to slow down a bit and take the time to actually learn to sew and not just sew. I am noticing a huge difference in my projects and skills. As I’ve spent more time watching, reading and learning from people like them! Thank you for watching me try to figure my life out ♥️
