That's the widest plate ever. Those 3 strikes were 2 inches off the corner. However 1) that's a great pitcher that knows where the umps strike zone is. 2) Pete knows his strike zone and if he didn't swing it wasn't a strike. That being said pete knows better, that was called a strike at least once this at bat so it ain't a strike but you gotta swing anyway. Love the cut up 2 greats.
I thought the first pitch was a strike. And when you have 2 strikes on you, you're taught to swing at something that close... Ball or strike, you gotta use the bat. Pete looked like he wanted to walk.
The greatest player in the game today takes that same intensity into every at bat and every pitch thrown. When Shohei walked in the WBC final, he yelled out, releasing his intense focus so that he could shift his focus to running the bases. He does the same thing when striking out a batter. At the same time, he tips his cap if he hits a batter and is the most polite player on the field, compromising not a single ounce of his competitiveness. He can run faster, hit farther, and throw harder than 99% who ever played the game. UNREAL!
All the greats had that consistent 100% intensity on every pitch, shot, throw, or whatever. Whether it’s Rose, Jack Nicklaus, Michael Jordan, Jimmy Connors, etc, etc.
Peter Rose crouched down like I did when I was 8 years old playing little league. I never struck out, had 2 doubles and the rest walks...batted 1000...:)
This entire playoff year was so awesome. I ditched my homework everyday after school to watch these games. Over in the junior league the Royals were battling the Evil Empire with my sister’s hero George Brett. She had his poster on her wall for many years. I believe this was the first World Series appearance for the Phillies and the Royals. An all astro-turf series. Speed was such a factor. Just a great time before the roid era.
I really enjoy the sports announcer saying,..."you know he's poison." Talking about Rose.(B.T.W. sounds like Keith Jackson to me) Brings back memories watching Ole Charlie Hustle vs The Ryan Express.
Pete Rose was so stooped over when he batted. Probably the greatest hitter in MLB history. I believe he should he allowed in the HOF. He’s served his time.
I've already said it, and I'll say it again. Nolan Ryan is a genetic freak. He certainly is an exception because no one playing now could physically perform what he did in his heyday or in his mid-40s. The legendary Satchel Paige is the only other pitcher in the same league genetically.
These were the days when you went to the park to watch Nolan break a record and Pete break a record in the same season. Tried so many times to see Pete with Cincinnati break the hit record in both Riverfront and Three Rivers. Two living legends of the game.
@@enigma9971 much tougher, their prima-donnas today, fucking little league pitcher's making tens of millions of dollars to try and pitch 6 innings, like, WTF!

HARDLY being s*** on... If anything, withheld from the HoF because if nothing else criminal in recent past decades....too much of a mans man and we can't be having that in girly upside down amuricuh...
Other than 1 high pitch, Nolan was only going to throw pitches that Rose could connect on, but not be able to put in play. That’s respect! Pete was masterful with ball choice. You’d assume that a guy who has hit more balls than anyone, that he would most likely be swinging on a full count. He didn’t bite on that fast ball tailing away to the right Pete was the best. He didn’t intimidate you with his power but he had an aggressiveness, intensity and prescience at the plate that was intimidating. He was the biggest battle a pitcher was going to face. He made you work. He used patience because he knew the more pitches he made you throw at him, the more likely he’d get to see a good one.
Correction: four of the best! The analyst alongside Keith Jackson was one of the all-time greatest pitchers in Don (Big "D") Drysdale. The 1980 NLCS was one of the best National League Championship Series of all time. If you are a baseball fan like myself it is one series i highly recommend watching, even though it is already 43 years old it still is up there with the best of all time.
I watched it as a 12 year old Philly kid. The previous several years the Phils had come up short against LA in the playoffs. Yes, was full of drama and a lot of the greatest players of the era. Every game was tight. Every at-bat mattered. Schmidt, Bowa, Matthews, Boone, McGraw, Rose. A lot of the greatest names on the Phils' all time roster. So much talent.
1981 NLCS LA Dodgers Vs Montreal Expos. Best of 5. A won the series 3-2. Game 5 ninth inning home run by LA won the series. Expos were very close to going to the World Series

I live in the middle of California and have always had loyalty to Oakland . Many years ago we got a chance to ride a party bus up to Candlestick to see the Astros play the Giants . Not being a Giants fan , but being a huge Nolan Ryan fan it was a natural fit . It was action wise one of the boringest games I had ever seen , because Ryan just had one of his great days of so many he had. That day he damm near pitched a no-hitter by 1-hitting the Giants as Houston won 1-0 Ryan was a freak of nature to begin with and a force of nature on the mound . That good ol boy from Texas was firing 100 mph fast balls and no hitters and one and 2 hitters well into his advanced playing years. After seeing him I was blown away. All you could hear coming from the field was this,,,,, POP!”””…. …. POP!”””…. ….. POP!”””…. ….. POP!”””…. ….. POP!”””…. ….. his pitches just abusing the catchers mitt. About every 10th Giant batter that came up would break the routine by fouling a pitch back behind them into the stands and after that it was back to POP POP Amazing ! .
Pete Rose stood very far away from the plate to the outside of the box. He was basically giving Nolan Ryan the outside. Rose was able to cover the outside due to being such a great hitter at going the other way. He probably never thought the umpire was going to give Ryan that outside strike. Due to a couple of calls early in the at-bat I expected Rose to move up in the box a little bit. He did not and that cost him the at-bat.
If ABC had it, Jackson called it. Wide World of Sports, some NBA with Bill Russell, and even a couple Indy 500s and and stock car races. Yes Indeed 💯 Agreed & I totally forgot that Keith called baseball. I was sure every Saturday afternoon I could count on Mr. Jackson would be calling the Main College Football Game in ABC, usually at high noon here in California, when I was attending UCLA I would try & be at the game usually, but watching Mr. Jackson call the NCAA Football Games, Luuuuved My Saturdays🏈🏈👏👏
Two of the greatest players to ever put on the uniform
Amen to that. 😊
Loved watching Nolan Ryan and JR Richard’s pitch
Watching Nolan Ryan pitch live is something to behold. I could hear that ball screaming 😱!!!!!!!!🔥🔥
Nolan is the man. None of those are strikes tho. Lol
Love Nolan 🔥
Except maybe the first ball lmao
love your response totally agree with both assessments
I'm guessing a couple of those pitches must have sounded like strikes. 😏😏😏
🤣
Now that’s hilarious. I agree with you 100%.
😂😂😂😂😂 he didn’t see them
Thanks for this. Such a great series.
Mr. Ryan is a man of extraordinary character and generosity! I am honored to have met him and his family!
That ump must have been from Texas.
😆 🤣
See my comment above 😂!
🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿
I don't care what anybody says you should be in the hall of fame Pete Rose
💯 agree
2 legends! Thank you for posting this. Brought back memories ❤❤
This is legendary beyond measure..
Wow, as a pitcher I want that ump! Not sure Pete could even reach those outside balls!
I know right 😆
Man, you could see Pete’s intensity in his stance and how he reacted after each pitch.
That guy lived to play the game at 100% every pitch.
Yes he did Rose was amazing
@@FLoCk3r They dont make ball players like ol Charlie Hustle anymore
Depends which team he beted on
The greatest player in the game today takes that same intensity into every at bat and every pitch thrown.
True classic baseball!!! Thanks for sharing.
That is one helluva strike zone
Crazy right 😆
Yet a consistent strike zone.
It was absurd. Rose right not to swing. All balls.
two of the best baseball players that ever lived Pete Rose Nolan Ryan
Absolutely
A true statement l
Amazing that one isn't in the hall
Two of my absolute heroes goin at it💪 Nolan was a genius pitcher, he was definitely a student of the game. Hard to beat a guy like that.
Miss this baseball, fast, quick action
Yes ❤️
It's called editing
No pitch clock necessary!
I get the point but just to clarify this video looks edited.
Two of the best to play the game.
Very true 👍
"if you haven't been struck out by Nolan Ryan then you're a nobody"
-Rickey Henderson
I really enjoy the sports announcer saying,..."you know he's poison." Talking about Rose.(B.T.W. sounds like Keith Jackson to me) Brings back memories watching Ole Charlie Hustle vs The Ryan Express.
Yup, it's Keith Jackson with Bob Uecker.
Some of the greatest times in MLB history for sure.
I agree, but that last pitch was a ball
That 3rd strike call was super generous to the pitcher.
Yep
Perhaps the UMPIRE was betting on the game, too!
@@davidharrison3711 or he had a plane to catch.
3-2 count anything close gets called a strike. Been that way since T ball
T-ball doesn't have a pitcher!
Pete Rose was so stooped over when he batted. Probably the greatest hitter in MLB history. I believe he should he allowed in the HOF. He’s served his time.
The man fired BBs from that thing the rest of us all call an arm. LEGEND OF LEGENDS.
I've already said it, and I'll say it again. Nolan Ryan is a genetic freak. He certainly is an exception because no one playing now could physically perform what he did in his heyday or in his mid-40s.
The legendary Satchel Paige is the only other pitcher in the same league genetically.
❤️
I'd pay good money to listen to Keith Jackson read a menu. The absolute best in my opinion.
🔥
Vin Scully
Vin Scully. The greatest. IMO
Keith Jackson for football Vin Skully for baseball Dave Niehaus and Harry Caray to get drunk with.
Whoa, nelly!😂😂😂
Pete Rose is and always will be one of the greatest ball players ever. And to watch these 2 legends play in same game against each other is remarkable
Pete’s tenure with the Phillies was so underrated!! He doesn’t get enough credit like he should!
These were the days when you went to the park to watch Nolan break a record and Pete break a record in the same season. Tried so many times to see Pete with Cincinnati break the hit record in both Riverfront and Three Rivers. Two living legends of the game.
❤️
And us poor folks could afford to go to.
You ain't kidding. $2 cheap seats . $2 Dodger dogs, $1 bag of peanuts, Lucky enough to see both play the game. @@aaron-dd5zr
3 days rest. Not an oddity for Ryan. Today's game. 5 days rest...not an oddity for everyone. Man was built different.
Yes he was
Five days rest and a pitch count, that's why you rarely see 20 game winners like you did in the Ryan era
Most rotations were 4 man back then
Men were tougher.
@@enigma9971 much tougher, their prima-donnas today, fucking little league pitcher's making tens of millions of dollars to try and pitch 6 innings, like, WTF!
Nolan Ryan was on a different level..man was throwing heat!
Nolan is such a legend . When baseball was baseball .
Nolan is a legend
He is. Wow so fun to watch
Stats aside. The attitude alone makes him a legend. Lol
@@playdiscgolf1546 yes it would 🔥
Yeah Nolan Ryan's a legend what about Pete Rose that 406 against Nolan Ryan that is a legend killer
Ryan got shelled in this game. 7 runs in 5 innings. Joe Niekro was their best pitcher that year.
When I played baseball as a youth, I would only slide like Pete Rose. He was probably my favorite player in those days. He should be in the HOF or just close the thing down.
Definitely should be in the HOF
@@StreakingTiger same here. I always went headfirst because of Pete and many times into home. I also loved to dragbunt down the first base line and dive into first, not slide, dive. Just like Charlie Hustle.
Love how the announcer came out the gate shitting on rose lol. "You know he's poison" Still one of the best to ever do it
...its a compliment if ever there was one....of epic heights to a man named Rose who's productivity on the plate is and was a legendary problem for the other side.....whom he as a player:
Has so many mosts,
at bats,
hits,
doubles,
4 hit games,
and it goes on and on and on and on.
HARDLY being s*** on...
If anything, withheld from the HoF because if nothing else criminal in recent past decades....too much of a mans man and we can't be having that in girly upside down amuricuh...
Pete Rose with an OBP above .500 with 41 plate appearances vs one of the greatest pitchers of all time. Crazy
I absolutely loved Pete rose as a kid. Played the game right. Also bet on the game 😂
😄
Loved him as a player except against my dodgers, but he was a shitty human being
Yes, but he bet to WIN.......BIG difference!
Other than 1 high pitch, Nolan was only going to throw pitches that Rose could connect on, but not be able to put in play. That’s respect!
Pete was masterful with ball choice. You’d assume that a guy who has hit more balls than anyone, that he would most likely be swinging on a full count. He didn’t bite on that fast ball tailing away to the right
Pete was the best.
Great comment 👍 thanks
I am laughing so hard I can’t even watch the video!! Hearing the voices in the background is crazy funny! Thanks I needed a good laugh😂
"You know he's poison.."
That announcer is a savage 😂😂😂
Rose, Ryan and Jackson. Three of the best!
Very good 👍
Absolutely!
Correction: four of the best! The analyst alongside Keith Jackson was one of the all-time greatest pitchers in Don (Big "D") Drysdale. The Dodgers great went between working ABC sports and calling the California Angels (before a stint with the Chicago White Sox) then coming back home to L.A. R.I.H. Big D.
One of the greatest hitters listen my fellow baseball fans 406 against Nolan Ryan I'm going to say it again he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame
No joke 🔥
@@FLoCk3r It is a joke that you think this guy belongs in Hall of Fame
@VA24541 it's a joke you don't now a days everyone is betting on sports and it's completely ok. Dudes stats alone should put him in there
Nolan Ryan definitely got the High outside calls. Both Players were some of the Greatest of All Time. When Baseball was Baseball.
This is when baseball was GREAT and truly America's game
I'm thinking a later NLCS with the Astros vs Mets in 1986. Phew!
1981 NLCS LA Dodgers Vs Montreal Expos. Best of 5. A won the series 3-2. Game 5 ninth inning home run by LA won the series. Expos were very close to going to the World Series
I hope one day Pete is forgiven for being human. No matter what you think of him. He was one of the best to ever play. I'm thinking he was the last player/manager. We all know Ryan was a beast!
if he admits what he did was wrong asks for forgiveness
@@williamdelong4861 I'm thinking he's done this. It's been 30 yrs but I seem to remember some kind of news deal. LoL if it was that important I would look it up

He's already done this decades ago @@williamdelong4861
Back when baseball was great and these are 2 of the fiercest badasses ever to play the game
Nolan is my favorite player of all time! Saw him play once for the Rangers as a kid. I was soooo excited.
Not a bad favorite player
I'm a St. Louis boy, born n raised since 1974 and as big as the Cardinals are here it was Nolan Ryan who captured my imagine. He was my favorite by 1982 and I modeled my wind-up after his as I pitched until my high school years. Pete Rose was my favorite non-pitcher for how he played the game. 🐢
....I have his Mets rookie card in mint condition
I’m with U
I saw him once by chance. Went to see him pitch against the tigers with the Church my family attended. And by chance, I mean I was dollar short but my Sunday School Teacher took pity on me (he knew why) & “make it ok”. Well, needless to say Nolan Ryan throws a NO HITTER. What N unbelievable talent.
Many Blessings All 🙏🇺🇸
First game I ever saw in person was watching him take a no-no into the 8th inning.
These are two legends hard playing baseball,oh how I miss these old days of real baseball.
Me too
De mis 5 lanzadores de la historia, El (expreso) Nolan Ryan es uno !,y por Rose tengo gran admiración!⚾⚾⚾
That day he damm near pitched a no-hitter by 1-hitting the Giants as Houston won 1-0
Ryan was a freak of nature to begin with and a force of nature on the mound . That good ol boy from Texas was firing 100 mph fast balls and no hitters and one and 2 hitters well into his advanced playing years. After seeing him I was blown away. All you could hear coming from the field was this,,,,,
POP!”””…. …. POP!”””…. ….. POP!”””…. ….. POP!”””…. ….. POP!”””…. ….. his pitches just abusing the catchers mitt. About every 10th Giant batter that came up would break the routine by fouling a pitch back behind them into the stands and after that it was back to POP POP Amazing ! .
@TerryThomas-vl6xe love this comment thanks for sharing 👍!
I would like to see the fireworks in today's game, with that strike zone.
Right lol
Lloyd Mclendon would dig out the plate and take it! lmao

That was two strikes and five balls. Bonds, Rose and Clemons not in the Hall makes a mockery of baseball.
@@barrymiller99 Bonds doesn't belong. Look at his stats and build before steroids.
Thank you for posting! ❤
Never knew Keith Jackson called baseball too. Another legend.
If ABC had it, Jackson called it. Wide World of Sports, some NBA with Bill Russell, and even a couple Indy 500s and and stock car races.
And a bunch of Olympics...heck, in 72, he called a Mark Spitz race, then the next day was doing news reports about the massacre there in Munich....and in no way felt out of place in a non-sports role. The man was incredible.
Yup ...
@@pullt Yes, I remember the 1972 Olympics all too well. With Jim McKay, they were an awesome duo!
He's a Haus
@@davidharrison3711 Yeah, McKay was incredible, too. Not that any sports announcer would want the opportunity to step into that scenario, but few would have had the gravitas to approach those two...and none would have been better.
Feels icky to write "opportunity" and "better", but I'm hoping the tenor of my thoughts come through. Then again, I'm no McKay or Jackson.
Nolan Ryan deserves a uniform that doesn't look like he works at Burger King.
😆 🤣
It looks funny today, of course. View history through the context of the time, instead of through a modern lens.
But seriously...those are some ugly ass unis😄
@@hegemonycricket2182 Good point. I was a product designer. I know these things. But traditional never fails when it comes to sports uniforms. That's why Alabama always looks good. Ryan wasn't going to give him anything over the plate or inside. The fact that everything was high and outside shows alot of respect for Charlie Hustle.
Pete was a tremendous hitter.
@@scottdavidson526 No s***!
The best ever.
Even the umpire helped out, by making home plate extra wide. And, probably, Pete's letters extra high too. Ryan's walk ratio was embarrassing and MLB probably gave him a bigger strike zone as a matter of policy. You do what's good for business, and it's good business to give your superstars and marquee names all the breaks. Over his career, Ryan averaged more than 4.5 walks per nine innings pitched came close to one walk for every two strikeouts. He walked eight batters in one of his seven no-hitters. He never threw a perfect game.
Gracias por subir, nostalgia Alert!
Watched Ryan pitch 92 mph ball live many times against the Padres at Jack Murphy Stadium. Also, saw Pete Rose head slide into 2nd several times. He was at Caeser's Autograph shop 7 years ago. Missed him by two minutes. Ozzy Smith was probably the best player I've ever seen live. Fricken' acrobat!
Later in this series rose worked a key walk. He flipped the bat almost like a homer. Most intense at bat ever.
