  • Please join the CSIS Defense-Industrial Initiatives Group (DIIG) for a virtual panel on military capabilities and security threats in the Western Pacific. This event launches the companion CSIS report. Colonel Mark F. Cancian (USMCR, ret.), Senior Advisor in the International Security Program at CSIS, will lead a moderated discussion with Dr. Charles Edel, Senior Advisor and Australia Chair at CSIS, Ms. Becca Wasser, Senior Fellow for the Defense Program and lead of The Gaming Lab at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), and Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery (USN, ret.), Senior Director of the Center on Cyber and Technology Innovation (CCTI) and Senior Fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD). The discussion will explore ways in which the United States and its partners can cover the capability gaps that exist in the Western Pacific until the AUKUS Pillar I submarine fleet is operational.
This event is made possible by support from the Thales Group.

One thing we should consider is taking advantage of both Korean and Japanese ship building expertise. There are political hurdles there with labor unions, but they offer a lot of capability, and it would tighten our relationship with them as an alliance while increasing our ship building rate.

In an event of a war between US and China, what is the survivability of shipyards in Korea and Japan, if they are to make naval ships for the US?
      Good try anyway.😄😄😄

America's biggest threat is our current political system, which is more focused on scoring points than working together. Our adversary's see this and continue to promote it.
voters need to watch the 2023 defense budget hearings after watching this to see who's focused on scoring political points and contracts so they know who to vote and not vote for the next election..
there has never been a more important time to put our partisanship aside and work towards solutions ..

      I agree.
      USA needs new constitution ASAP.
With more partiers to vote for the "My Side Bias" that plagues America will be greatly lessened.

The biggest irony is that, for each war game, China always started to attack US forces, even in Japan, first. In fact, China would never need to attack US/Japan in an event of a reunification war over Taiwan Strait. Then, the scenario would be: will US attack China first? The answer is obviously no, as US can't even send its troops to help out Ukrainian.

Can't or won't send troops to Ukraine?

WHAT THE HELL?! 10% HYPERSONIC DEFENSE?! are you kidding me?! our shield and its infrastructure would be wise to be our first military priority!!! not offense in hypersonic. 18 billion is a little much! insane.

If we look at history Americans normally over estimate their enemies.
Corruption in the CCP military's is at least as bad as the Russians. (maybe 1/3)
The CCP has less combat experience than the Russians.
Taiwan is a mountainous, jungle, fortress island.
The Taiwan straight is a very shallow death crossing where even subs cant hide. (turkey shoot)
Day one CCP would have No satellites, imports or uninterrupted national power supply.
The CSIS war game from 2023 was disappointing for me.
Missing so many different variables & factors.
To think the US would not use ANY of its MANY classified capability's if its super carriers were being sunk is just laughable to me.
Let not forget the US would have MANY Allies who would send supporting war ships.
