  • I replaced alternator on my 2002 BMW 540i. I used aftermarket brand.
I think you can buy any brand alternator as original Bosh last only 125000km.
Alternator just stop working without any signs. I had red battery light on dashboard.
I didn't film how to remove protection cover underneath your car as I already have this in this video:

I would only note that you do NOT have to drain the coolant from the radiator. So you can skip that step (min 1:15 to 1:35), unless you plan to flush and replace the coolant in the cooling system after replacing the alternator.

At 3:30, I tried to do the same thing as you there but I did it from the top but it did not budge. Would there be any other reason why the tensioner wouldn't move other than the fact I did it at the wrong angle?

    • @mikes.garage

You should not have any problems with this. You need to use breaker bar as the pressure on the tensioner is to high and you need to tern it clockwise with some pressure.

+rurouni kenshin Red oil light indicates that you don't have pressure in the engine. It could be: very low oil level, oil pump is not working or chain broke for oil pump.
Battery light indicates that your battery doesn't get charged. It could be alternator, bad connection to the battery or alternator, bad battery(this is only if you can't start the car). Mis fire could be spark plugs or coils, also timing chain stretched out or someone played with camshafts. What did you swich?
Yes, I would drop the oil pan to see what you have there. This is very simple on V8. Why do you think it can be the sluge? It could be the sluge only if you not changing the oil more then 15000km. The oil must be change every 8000-10000km at list.
