    As an ex mtb racer from the 90's, I F*****G LOVE THIS !!!!!! Great Job. You are setting the standard for bike race coverage. Beeaaauuutiful ! perfect commentary as well. It adds something very special to hear the racer give thoughts from the race filmed from his bike. Are you guys the first to do this ????

    Hey I'm a highschool racer in NorCal league, wondering why on such a short race some riders are resting/not pedaling on slight downhill sections or less sharp corners. I feel like just a little bit of extra effort on these sections can cut down on a lot of time.
    Edit: also seeing some of the of the ways you guys try to get more aerodynamic is very interesting, will definitely try next race!

    If TR is based out of the Los Angeles area, it might be worth reaching out to Ben Goyette. He records all his XC races and puts on the data overlay. It would be great to interview him while analyzing his races.

    • @WRXJIM
      @WRXJIM Před 5 lety +1

      I run both regularly, The Aspens are amazing, and lighter than the Rekon Race. I feel like they are way more predictable on loose fine gravel too. however, wet grass in a straight line they are like a slick so zero to no grip, same on any slippery surface when you are upright.(Many a sketchy zero traction skid into a corner on a grass section on a sunrise race start) You dont get the benefit of the awesome side knobs until youre leaned over. This obviously can make slippery (wet) banked turns a little sketchy.
      Personally the Aspen is my tyre of choice for any event. They do wear out fast though, maybe 30% quicker than the Rekon race, and another caveat is because they dont have a whole lot of rubber sharp stones can tear them open a little easier (Ive had two unpluggable punctures where I have had to use a sock inside the tyre to stop the tube poking out in order to finish. I doubt the Rekon race would have punctured because there are deeper and a lot more "lugs". Just my 2c based on maybe 7 sets of Rekon Races and many many many more sets of Aspens... The ONLY other tyre I use is the Vittoria Mezcal. If they were lighter they would be the perfect mix of both the Rekon Race and the Aspen. They are FAST. They have the new version of it, but they dont have the TNT sidewall protection, which would be ok if you dont race on very rocky trails... Leave the IKON and the Ardent race on the shelf unless you want a tyre that can last twice as long...

    • @kmac720
      @kmac720 Před 5 lety +1

      @@WRXJIM Thanks for the reply! I'm always looking for an edge in XC races. I'm currently running a Schwalbe Racing Ralph (old style HS) in the front and a Thunder Burt in the rear. (I live in Michigan so not much rock to be found unless you head to the upper peninsula. ) The thunder burt is not the best handling tire, but they are really light with minimal rolling resistance on our fast race courses.

    • @WRXJIM
      @WRXJIM Před 5 lety

      kmac720 you’ll LOvE the Aspens. So much corner grip while being a super fast roller. I train on the Rekons (or Vittoria Mezcals TNT version) but race on the Aspens.
      There is a reason N1NO runs them pretty much exclusively (granted he get the “Pro only” 170TPI model) the tread is the same just not as supple.
      They do wear fast though.

  • @drewcama5481
    @drewcama5481 Před 5 lety +1

    Nice talk through and all. But whats the point of the front shocks here wouldn't a lighter for be more important? Also why not a cyclo- cross bike because there didn't seem to be any need for a mountain bike geometry on this track. Is there a wheel size rule or something? So many subdivisions in mountain bike racing I think they are diluting the sport personally.

    This looks like CX CycloCross on Mt bikes ?

    • @TrainerRoad
      @TrainerRoad  Před 5 lety +1

      Short track racing does bear some similarities to CX racing, however, there are some key differences. Specifically, CX races tend to have more turns than a short track MTB course, as well as various obstacles like barriers, sand pits, run-ups, that keep the average speed lower and may require you to dismount from your bike.
