Gwen McCrae ~ Rockin' Chair 1975 Soul Purrfection Version

- Here's the extended version you always wanted to hear!
Did you know that "Rockin' Chair" was written with Betty Wright in mind? She turned it down, so it went to Gwen. Written by Clarence Reid and Willie Clarke, the song used the "rockin'" metaphor as an invitation to partake of her feminine wiles.
George and Gwen were signed together for Henry Stone's TK Records, but the hits were hard to come by from the house producers Steve Alaimo and Brad Shapiro. George then took his wife on a client and managed her career giving her her first hit 1970's "Lead Me On".
It is well known now that George's #1 hit, "Rock Your Baby" was written for Gwen and George felt that he should support his wife and find her a hit. Betty Wright was a rising star at the time, so after she declined to record "Rockin' Chair" George took the song to Gwen.
The music track had already been recorded so all Gwen had to do was sing the song and sing it she did, making it her own with background vocals by George & Gwen the song perfectly dovetailed with "Rock Your Baby" and was taken to be an answer song. George even sang "Rock Your Baby" in the song to reinforce the connection.
The song was released and it hit #1 R&B for one week peaking at a very respectable #9 on the national Hot100 Survey and became her signature
There has NEVER been an official remix, so here is my take on what it should have been. I have always loved this song, so sexy and inviting and have gotten many, many requests to remix it. With my new toy I did just that! Time to start rockin' that chair! - Hudba

63 and I’m right here with you!! My 9yr old granddaughter LOVES this song. It gives me so much pleasure to see her rockin’ to it as I drive along.😍😍I told her when she gets older, she will KNOW what GREAT music is because of me!!😍
I am glad that I was born in the 60s and grew up in the 70s and 80s the 60s 70s and 80s is the best music of all times
There were so many GREAT singers in that day, all the artists had to bring their vocal 'A game' or go home! Not like today, where mostly everything is synthesized.
60s here and still growing up lol .....😂
67 baby right here👍🏿
Yes we grew up with the best music before the evil powers that be destroyed it all 😢

Wow, you two are so sweet, well I hope you both still be rocking this chair till eternity. Ataahua.
No school like the old School R&B..🎤🎼🎵🖤❤️🤍
Not that it matters one little whit.....but fwiw I'm white and was about 20 in '75 when I first heard this on my old Ford car's dinky little am radio. I've always been a guy that has been a hard-rocker and a guy that insists that if a song is going to be one of my all-time lifelong favorites.....it NEEDS to have one hell of a heavy bass line. In other words, I dig tunes that have BALLSY, tough-ol' bass lines. When I heard this song the first time, the bass part made my little speaker in my car rattle and protest violently. I WAS HOOKED! This is one of the most ballsy, bad-ass tunes any woman ever sang. Almost 50 yrs. old and it STILL holds up. Thank You Gwen McCrae! I hope you're in great health and loving life right now. jbeinarizona
Joel, most old school soul music has heavy bass lines. Is this the only one you discovered?
Oh Brother.......NOT HARDLY. Most likely before you were born. With respect. jbeinarizona@@mangojulie123
@@joelewing4498😂😂😂 I'm older than you think.
One of my all-time favorites. Class of '75!
I miss this kind of true heart grabbing music
I'm listening in 2024❤
This certainly brings back good memories of my dancing days Was 23 then, and unmarried at the time. Disco was our thing at that time. Now 71 divorced and a mom who constantly reminds my son that his mom was killing it then. He just smiles at laughs at our get up and colours of those days😅😅😅.
Oh how I miss this kind of music
I LISTEN TO IT EVERYDAY IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITES
Once upon a time when we had "SOUL MUSIC"! Some forget this very talented artist had hits thru the 80's as well. Made grown black folk have a totally different perception of your average Rocking Chair!
I'm still listening hard to this in 2024 and nothing else but old scool!
Back in the 70ishI remember when my Mom learn me how to Swing off this Song.
70’s 80’s 90’s were the best eras when it comes to music you understood the lyrics and they had so much meaning proud to be born in this era of 🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵

I was 14 when this track was released... It was still playing at the clubs when I turned 18 and became of 'legal age' (living in Sweden...) in 1979.
The treasured memories it brings to mind makes me smile and shed a tear at the same time, wishing I could revisit that sweet moment in time for just one evening...💃🕺
Mmm... that subtle inhale at 4:49...
Wow, we must be soul mates! We are exactly the same age. And, I had exactly the same memories of times then and have the same feelings now listening to this song.

True dat!
She made me cry when I heard her voice, her melody, her soul. beautiful!!
This is just brilliant, this singer has so much depth and feeling in her voice.
A diamond of a singer.
Fabulous mix, this takes me back to my first year as a professional DJ at David's Disco in Toronto Canada. This is the song that made me fall in love with Gwen's voice. She was a sweet and kind lady who came to our record pool to promote this when it came out. I finally met George McCrae in 2017 at The 40th Anniversary Concert for Saturday Night Fever, great people. Thanks for the trip down memory lane DJ DISCOCAT
