- Micro bubbles are your enemy! You've either had microbubbles, you have them now, or you will have them in the future. Microbubbles make your tank look DIRTY even when it's clean! I'll tell you how to find the source of them and more importantly how to get rid of them. This video is for you if you have an African cichlid tank, an American cichlid tank, or any tropical fish tank. If you want your aquarium to look great, you need to see this!
Cichlid Charmer is dedicated to sharing the joy of keeping African cichlids and American cichlids and sharing information about them. Much of my content is not cichlid fish specific, however. It also pertains to all tropical fish aquariums. I will share what I have learned about cichlids and other fish, and everyone is welcomed to comment with their own experiences and information about fish and aquarium practices in general.

What has your experience been with microbubbles? Also, how about that Wes Anderson movie?
thanks replying back to my questions an your videos are great I do try catch them all
yeah My Experience with the fx6 has been really good since I had it my water I had no serious problems really No ammonissues issues, but twice nitrate says at 20ppm most of the time I hate feeling them cuz it makes the water cloudy for that 5min You know how we are we Like to see the fish floating in air 😀
@@roystevenson1297 Oh I certainly do! I like my Fx6's, although I am strongly considering a sump for my next one.
“Where the ‘cuss’ are they coming from” 🤣 I’m totally stealing that.
Also my guess is that micro bubbles come from something weird with the surface agitation in your tank. Maybe too much breaching
What the cuss is breaching??
@@CichlidCharmer idk why I said breaching. I meant breaking.
You know, when the waves get all bubbly and turbulent at the surface of the water.
@@thenelsonbruhs722 Oh gotcha. That's a great guess! I'm sure you saw that it wasn't the reason for them, but still a smart idea.
Thank you for this video. That's exactly what I needed when I needed it. I was trying to find the bubble issue, which you answered for me, but unfortunately, now I'm also kicking myself on something else. I realized I cleaned a filter on another tank today that I shouldn't have. It wasn't that dirty & absolutely shouldn't have been done yet. It's a newer tank, so hopefully, I didn't take too many steps backwards on that one. Luckily, I only rinsed everything & put it right back in. I think I shall set up a schedule to prevent that in the future.
When it comes to finding problems with your fish tank, CZcams has been more reliable than Google.
Oh you're so welcome! Glad it helped. If you just gently rinsed in tank water and it was at least a few months old, you're probably okay, but add some bacteria in a bottle and run some ammonia tests for a few days just to be safe. Thanks for the awesome comment!
Great video I’ve learned a lot as a beginner. Thank you.
Thank you!
Great video regarding micro bubbles, Alcatraz looks sweet mate👍
Thank you, Stefanos!
It's the Major downside of having sponge filters too. You can have perfect water clarity, but as soon as you put a air stone or sponge filter then your going to always see them
I'm usually seeing larger bubbles with stones and sponge filters. Are you seeing microbubbles?
@CichlidCharmer yeah I get them because I have 3 bubble makers on my back wall of the fish tank. If you look at my video about our ranchu and oranda adventure about halfway through the video you can see them all. I've just learnt to deal with them now
Very very useful information
Thank you, Dakota ❤️
I like the pothos addition.
Thank you. It needs more light. Not growing too much
It will take off once the roots get more established.
I live in northern California we had power outage for a day and a half with no lost of fish they made it through the power outage
Cichlid Charmer,
Nice video about the micro bubbles. I have sponge filters in all my tanks so I always see the bubbles but they go away fast. In my CA 100 gal tank I have an internal filter that pushes out air so there is always micro bubbles in the tank. Some of us can’t afford the big canister filters. 😢😂
I like those internal filters too. I like the bubbles from them as well 🤩 Thank you, Jeremy!
very awesome video amazing information great job
Thank you!
Your welcome anytime my friend
@@LK50634 😊
@@CichlidCharmer okay then great job
Oh, I did the old air stone to close to the intake hose, kept hearing strange burping noises, and microbubbles everywhere, yup guilty here. Thanks for the great info I never knew about the media being the problem good to know and I'm also one of those clean the media too often type sigh, hanging my head. in shame. Again thanks for your continuing education for all our nut jobs!
I never knew about that one either, until I had the problem and nothing else fixed it. I sure was glad I didn’t have to replace the hose
I hate dealing with those hoses mine are those clear green kind that show the scunge in them making me want to clean them even more...@@CichlidCharmer
My guess is that wase decomposes in canister filters. Assuming there are no leaks and the outlet is not too close to the top to catch air.
Oh that’s a good guess! I don’t know if it was from the chemical process of decomposition combined with the fact that there Was too much waste in there, but it was definitely ready for a cleaning.
I never had that problem in the nautilus tank or the pink ballerina.
That's great. I've had some microbubbles before but it was a pretty long time ago. I think it was because the hoses had some slack, but I couldn't say for sure it's been so long.
my fx6 has been giving a lot of micro bubbles and it really sucks, makes the water look filthy
It really does suck. Maybe try some of the things I mentioned in the video and see if it helps. Hopefully it does!
Are some micro bubbles good for a saltwater tank or is it all about flow of the water ? I have a cascade where your outtake has four little holes and sits at the top rite corner , should that outtake piece from the cascade be completely submerged or have it sit above the water ? Sorry if dumb questions just wanna make sure i dont have any hiccups with my tank. Its a 55 gallon tank i have a bubbler but i wasnt sure if the bubbler is creating enough oxygen for the tank ? Or combination of bubblet and good flow. Or do you want that out take creating some micro bubbles for enough oxygen on the tank ? Hopefully i was able to make sence with what i was trying to ask and explain
I’m sorry, but I know less than nothing about saltwater fish keeping. I’m of no use to you 🤓
Clogged fx6 media in the canister. It's happened to me before, almost like the motor is working hard to push water through so bubbles end up coming out. I have now added pre-sponge filters on both fx6's and work great.
Yep! Did you get the pre filter idea from Ben Ochart?
@@CichlidCharmer yes sir, and even though it don't look big on his videos, when I got mine I was like holy s$@& lmao. I did utilize a zip tie on the intake stem itself and slide sponge over it, but it doesn't tear up or get caught. Fits snug.
@@dennispeleg7843 I bought a couple too a while back. I opened the box and said the same thing! Those things are HUGE. I tried them for a while, but it was a paint to clean them and I felt like I was making a huge mess doing it. I might give it another go, but if they look bad, I'll take them back out again.
@@CichlidCharmer I don't mind them. I can sit by the tank and watch whatever food got away and gets stuck to the sponges, the fish will nip at it.
Guessing trapped air in filter media due to water level fluctuations?
I think it has something to do with cavitation in the impeller housing. I really don’t fully understand cavitation, however 😳
It's the actual rubber from the FX inlet and outlet connectors inside the tank that is causing me issues.
It's a new filter and because the rubber is of a good quality, it leaks like a white calcium powfer out that turns the rubber connectors from black to white. I scrub them with a toothbrush twice a week but the white powder stuff covers the water surface and I can never clear it all. it is pure clear water where the flow comes out but the rest of the water surface is covered in little white dots. I'm hoping that eventually the rubber calcium type stuff will expire and no more will seep out and then my water surface can be clear once again...Sorry for the essay!
I have to scrub mine as well, or they turn white. I just thought that the biofilm seemed to stick to that material for some reason.
@@CichlidCharmer No it's the actual rubber if it's good quality, it's known as 'blooming'. Give it a google!
Oh wow, so it’s a stabilizer they put in extremely high quality rubber to keep it from becoming brittle. How’d you get so smart?? 🤓
@@CichlidCharmer I'm just hoping it has a limited timeframe though for doing what it does as I don't want to be scrubbing those connectors forever haha!
But isn't that a good thing? The bubbles popping will bring oxygen in to tank right? I actually use a spray bar in my fx2 and the fish are very active now than when I only used v shaped filter output,
On the surface of the water bubbles are good. These micro bubbles tend to stay in the water column and just blow around the tank and sometimes they settle on panels and decor. I’ve also heard they they can be bad for your fish, but that isn’t confirmed.
I’m wondering if you have an insight on this. I’m currently running an fx5 and fx6 on my 180. I replaced two media baskets in the fx5 with matrix. Since I replaced them it’s been louder (like you can hear the water moving through it) and producing micro bubbles. I’ve opened and closed it, checked the orings, and hoses and still micro bubbles. I just decided to throttle the output and the micro bubbles stopped. I’d like to run it fully open but for now this seems like a good temporary solution.
Any ideas?
Love the content!
Just a little further context. Even throttled the fx5 is easily twice as loud as the fx6
Very interesting. I wonder if there is too much matrix in the basket? If you overstuff it can reduce the flow and that can cause micro bubbles. Perhaps experiment with different amounts of matrix. It should be after your sponges, but I’m sure you already know that. Just in case though.
Thank you!
air getting in the lines of filter
Good one! I thought that might be my issue so I pulled the line tight and expelled any extra air. No dice.
Dealt with them about a month ago, have herd it can be the propeller needing cleaned in thr FX6. Tried cleaning that and just about everything in this video, after cracking upen the filter and cleaning it, they disappeared. I have a feeling it was a less than ideal seal at one of the gaskets.
That definitely could be.
Video yang sangat mengedukasi sskali kawan 10:15
Thank you so much 😍
great video an your tank looking great the new setup fish looks awesome great job a question i have a 75gal an i have fx6 and a sunsun 704b do you think that's too much for a 75gal African cichlids tank it's about 22 fish
It’s always good to have redundancy in vital components, but an fx6 is plenty and should produce a pretty strong current. Having said that, I do have an fx4 and a 407 on my 75g. I definitely don’t need a Wavemaker in there, but everyone is happy - not constantly fighting the current. If you have both, you could set up the fx6 and see if additional current would be a problem and then choose to add the sun sun or not.
@CichlidCharmer yah you think so saying fx6 is a overkill by it's self lol for a 75gal lol one time someone told me having a fx6 on 75gal is like having a sump on it but you know us Hobbies fish keepers nothing is good enough to us in our eyes we always see something wrong wen there's nothing wrong lol 😀
I would have an fx6 on my 75 if I had been smart and bought one instead of an fx4. I think I would always choose an fx6 over an fx4 now.
My micro bubbles came from a new set up the water wasnt quiet warm enough so i have micro bubbles all over everything
Yep that’ll do it
do you run an sponge filter in your tank or just the FXs? I have a sponge/air filter in mine but I hate it. I have always had it in case I need to quickly setup a hospital tank but I am considering removing it completely. I run a large Jabao wave maker so my thought is I don't need the surface agitation.
Hi Don! I used to do what you are doing. I also hate the aesthetic, so I do it a little differently now. If I need a hospital or quarantine tank, I place a sponge filter inside them. Then I just go rob a little bio media from an fx6, place it in a mesh bag and place it on the sponge filter. It’s been doing the trick for a few years now 💪
I'm pretty sure microbubbles are caused by fish farts.
Totally unrelated. You are hopefull your beautiful Super Red will play nice but worried as he is a looker. I have an Albino Red Empress. He is the largest fish in my grow out tank. Best tank mate ever. He doesn't mess with any tank mates, some of whom are much smaller.
I’ve suspected as much 🤪
Little known fact, less than a 1/2% of the time, it is the cause every time!
Do you need the outlet and inlet both under water level ?
Yes.
@@CichlidCharmer cheers for that, subscribed
That helped instant below water level bubbles gone niceeeeeee thnx
@@dannyhoogenboom885 awesome, and you’re welcome!
Fluval suggested maintenance is monthly clean and carbon replacement. Do you replace the carbon but just not clean yours? I've been doing mine monthly since I have to get to the bottom basket to change the carbon anyways. Is it just a marketing tactic to get people to buy more Fluval media?
I don’t use any chemical filtration at all. I’m not positive why they tell you to clean monthly, but there are some filters if memory serves that tell you to replace your sponges and possibly biomedia every so often, and you only need to replace those if they are falling apart, so who knows.
I forgot to mention, "The Fantastic Mr. Fox" OK I remembered watching the movie but forgot its name so I looked it up, guess that doesn't count haah!
That counts, Polly. Great movie, right? Did you like it?
For what I remember yes I liked the movie with animation, "are you cussing at me" no are you cussing at me" anyway yes I liked the movie@@CichlidCharmer
A seal leak
Good guess, but not this time 🤩
