Very helpfull tips U could ad-when U r reversing dont be ashamed to go out of the cabin and have a look first-just to be sure(better safe than sorry)
I'm a new pass class 1 and have never driven professional. Regarding securing loads where do we learn that? It's not on any training or test?
Good advice.
Most good drivers would do all of this.
When i use ratchet straps or ropes on a load i always make sure the ratchets or knots are on the near side of the trailer.The reason behind this is because if the straps/rope start to come loose on a motorway you are much safer on the inside to re-tighten them more so on the outside.

Just a few words of advice from "an old ex long-haul European trucker", (before mobile phones, sat nav's and automatic gear boxes):
Behave like a professional driver at all times. Even though you have control of a big truck on the road you have to EARN the respect of other drivers. NEVER demand it!!
And remember: You don't own the road.....the road owns you***

As a new pass driver, especially class 2, your first job will quite likely be for a company that tends to overload drivers with work, also traffic operators will most likely be bullying you into getting drops done quicker all the time. Don't rush under any circumstances, especially on a road. If they get rid of you for bringing some of the load back to the depot because you were late (which I never seen happen to anyone really), they are only doing you a favour, because your next job might be a lot more relaxed. There is a huge demand for HGV drivers at the moment, you'll always find work.

Absolutely true. I work for a company, I won't say who or where I'm based, but I recently dropped from our main depot to one of our sub depots. This is what i do every night. I was in the Sub's yard an hour and 15 minutes. I was getting rogered for it. 20 minutes of that was a break, 10 of which was to find my way back, because I'd never been there before and I knew the rout it was taking me had a closure and I wanted to make sure I didn't have to turn around due to a weight limit on a diversion. The rest of it was disarming the alarm that I armed (Should have been on, but wasn't due to the previous driver) and it just wouldn't go off. Checking where my load was going inside, since it's split into two internal locations, opening the shutters and turning the lights on. Plus a cheeky smoke or 2. 1 before unloading and 1 after. First time there and they bollock me for it.
Do not rush. Especially now, 2 years after this comment. We have an even bigger shortage of drivers and many companies will love to have you. Don't let them bully you into taking your breaks while you tip or whatever they might say. Your breaks are for you to unwind, get exercise, keep yourself alert by taking a rest or some air and in general to make sure you're still legally fit to complete your shift. If they try telling you this, say no. They can't force you. A call to them from the DVSA over them doing this will be worse for them than you. Otherwise, this job can be really great and fun. You get out and about, see things and most of the guys I work with, at least, are absolute characters who I love chatting and joking with.
It’s your licence and spent a fortune to get. Never risk it. My first time. I failed the lorry on checks and refused to take it out. Lots of shouting by a fat woddling useless lump of lard transport mgr, I just threw the keys back at him and waved goodbye! His attitude changed very quickly when I told him I would be reporting him and company to DVLA and alert VOSA. Suddenly a new legal lorry appeared and was loaded. Never never risk your licence for a company
Great advice, especially point number 10. I've come back into trucking having been behind a desk for many years and refer to things like this a lot. Never be afraid or embarrassed to ask other drivers, whether it be help reversing, tacho questions or just general info. I'd rather get over my pride and get the job done safely and legally using whatever help I could find.

Hey Joe, glad you are finding the content helpful, It can all seem a little daunting to begin with but it soon all starts to make sense. try not to take too much advice as gospel and try and get as much info from official sources to save confusion.

I've just got my first Class 1 job and even before I got it, I watched this video. The 6 P's is one of the best acronyms I've heard in a while and already it's saved my arse a few times. While driving a 44 tonne chiller box is one of the worst times to make a mistake, as I've learned the hard way. Great video and thank you, I have it saved to remind myself of the best basics.

good vlog its nice to know there is a vast knowledge ready to help from the other drivers out there as it always has been,some newbys dont bother they just mess up,when i started i was with a mature driver for a month to learn the locations roping & sheeting tipping on level ground filling in the logbook or swindle sheets as the ministry called them and after the month it was like i had been there years but there are situations that will occur throughout your career that you cannot learn to avoid but your experience will allow you to spot the risks, lets hope that this vlog will help many newbys to avoid mistakes in the future.silly and costly ones.
@KevTee great video many thanks. Just recently turned 50, I assesd my life an current career, and are most definitely interested in becoming a Lgv driver. I am under no illusion in thinking that it will be an easy walk in the park, but I am a determined person, hard working but also a SMART worker. I just had it up to the rafters in my line of work now for many years and lost my passion for it.
So any information relating to getting into being an Lgv driver would be greatly appreciate.

wet wipes are a must, when I was driving the service facilities in the uk were rubbish, after a few years I went continental.. great services, good roads, less traffic, a far more enjoyable experience and more importantly over the channel being a truck driver is considered a profession... and it is! safe journeys..

Hi Kev, your videos are awesome and honestly brighten up my bad days, I've been looking into hgv driving and wondered if being a class 2 driver is a career worth pursuing and wanted to know your thoughts on this?
Also to make sure that the vehicle that you will be driving is loaded within the weight constraints of the vehicle. A lot of companies will just slap it on, in their mind 'If it is on, it is gone'. You can normally tell if your vehicle is overloaded before you take it on the road. At the end of the day, it is your licence, not the planners/loaders!

How are you able to tell the total weight of a load?
Having been a HGV class one driver for 32 years , you give really good advice...from my experience the main problem driving a large goods vehicle is other drivers making life much more difficult for you...and the trick / skill of reversing is knowing when to take the lock off.
With your tip on asking, I would also say that if you're at an unknown yard find the shunter and ask them - shunters almost always know everything in my experience!
Great tip Rachel, never annoy the shunter either otherwise it could be a very long day 😂

Hi Kev, I've just returned to the UK. I've been running US and Canada for past 11 years. I have ordered the DEZL770, got my medical booked in order to reinstate licence, then send for digi card as well as a CPC course which should see me set to go. No doubt I am rusty driving in UK. Fully agree with all of those tips, we live and learn. Many thanks, really appreciate your videos since I started watching today.

Brilliant thanks for this. I just passed my class1 yesterday and I understand it takes 2+ years to get experienced in driving them bad boy's. In the meantime is there any tips, hints or guides you have on the driving/manoeuvrability side of things ie. Watching blind spots, blind sided, watching trailer and head board swing.
Tip 3 is good for any new driver even a learner

Some good tips there Kev. Can I add to the bridge one? I say minimum 6” clearance just be safe, a little excessive but I feel safer that way. Also GOAL which stands for Get Out And Look if unsure. Better to check than damage your truck or someone’s vehicle or property

I know this video is a few years old but thanks anyway. My own perspective, not new but been away for 21 years with diabetes revoked licence. Now treatments are so improved I'm allowed back, so much has changed, Sat Nav, CPC, digital tacho cards, automatic gears!
Kev, I am a class2 plant transporter on a 32t with a beavertail. I have transported 14t excavators and it is not just about the arm stretched as far as it can go because sometimes we have multiple machines on board. The main goal is to measure the final height with the suspension on high and makes a route plan accordingly. Clearly the accidents shown on your video have not done so.
If I can fold the arms tight then I can go as far as the top of my lorry, 12' 9' but sometimes it is much higher due to load so I make the route modification to avoid lower bridges, I also change the height marker in cab to current config load.
I use a height telescopic pole measuring device but you did not mention this as a viable tool.
There should be no an UNLUCKY option, it is our duty to transport the load in the safest possible way and compensate if not sure.
Correct, we should not rely on the sat nav but we are not infallible either. Satnav is a great tool and it has to be used with care. I always put at least 1 foot of clearance on my truck nav so I can relatively be safe with the chosen route.
Good tips
The 6p's tip is priceless tho
A drivers day will often go pearshaped because they didn't plan it right
Assume there will be another truck or two in the queue to be loaded and tipped etc that way you won't expect to be loaded first and tipped first and your day go pearshaped when there's a queue to be loaded and tipped etc
Great tip about cities etc eg try to have your break before you go in to cities so you are not trying to find somewhere to park for break in city especially London unless you know a couple of places before you go in to the city as trying to find a place to park for break whilst being stuck in gridlocked stationary traffic is always good fun when driving time running out of the etc er not
Haha yeah I liked the 6p's. Like you say, you should always allow a little extra time for loading/unloading.
Nothing more stressful than trying to find parking when you can see that time counting down and then the 4:15 starts flashing at you

I'm a truck driver in New Zealand I drive a 23 tonn Mitsubishi
These are few of my own tips I would like to share for new drivers
1 always refuel your truck before finishing ornparking up for the night as condensation can build up in the diesel tank and may lead to water in the fuel
2 I'm not sure what it's like over in England or Europe but the sun down in New Zealand and Australia is very harsh and even in winter during those clear blue days you can get sun burn
So spf50 is a good idea
3 If your driving a manual transmission truck try to use for Jake/engine brake and your gears more than your service brakes this will reduce the wear on your brakes and keep the cool if an emergency stop wear to happen

You can always adjust whilst on the road if you are on main routes as they normally give you distances to services or your satnav might as well!

Tip 4/ 3.55 If you;re tired..take a break have a sleep - end of. Winding the window down will only get you to a safe place to stop..no further.Good video!

Great video as always, As a hopefully a new Class 2 driver from next month just one thing how do i find out what the height is of the lorry if im not to trust the height marker?
+Pixel Warrior thanks mate, best thing to do is to get yourself a tape measure. You can get purpose design measuring stick but there quite expansive. If you carry various loads that could be higher than the cab, the height indicator wouldn't be much use anyway.good luck with the class 2 👍

When I was doing my test I was waiting at traffic lights with queuing traffic on my right. Heavy traffic.
There was a yellow box on the traffic lights and traffic ahead filters to one lane. My instructor told me on my lesson that as long as the tractor unit clears the yellow box I'm in the clear. But what about the trailer? For this I failed my test.

Great tips. Just one observation. When you are on break ,be careful going around to check you truck ,if they see that ,you can be fined to doing some work on your break. Wait until the break finished. But great video thanks.

Ask should be the first tip Kev, all the rest are good too but if you do not know then tip no. 1 is ASK. My next tip is to read digest and understand the DVSA drivers hours rule book. It still amazes me the drivers I meet who think that a minimum WTD break must be 30 minutes if they haven't driven 4 &1/2 hours or they must get as close to 6 hrs before a break.
Compleaty agree mate, any practical advice comes best from the more experienced but if it's anything to do with legislation, look it up for yourself 😂
Nice vid cheers , I have a quick question , I'm looking at becoming a truck driver and was wondering on how the pay work when your waiting to unload or load up ect, are you only paid for the hours you drive??
You will either be on a day rate or paid per hour, either way your still paid for waiting but your obviously better off on hourly rate as with day rate your always eating into your own time whilst waiting.

+B8ll0cx5 5555557 don't let it put you off mate, it's just things to be aware of. As long as you are of your surroundings and put your training into practice you shouldn't have a problem. Get that mod 2 rebooked 👍
Iv got questions. Is vosa still around? Is it the dvsa now? Are they the only ones who can pull us over apart from the cops? What happens when i download my tacho card in the workplace? Is that for the companys records or does it get sent anywhere? A 12 tonne truck.... does that mean it can take 12 tonne on the back? I know you spread the weight out n try n get it up to the headboard etc. What is train weight and gross weight? How do u know when theres too much over the rear axle? What is the hydraulic suspension used for? Do i press the centre the suspension button when theres a weight on the back? Thats just some of my questions

It's extremely difficult to find a driving role in the logistics and distribution industry when you've pasted your test. Agencies are a waste of time offering work here and there. Many firms don't employ new starters because they don't want to have to spend time showing them the ropes. There doesn't seem to be any permanent roles available and every door is closed. It makes you think why spend a small fortune on gaining licences when there isn't any opportunities or openings? I thought there was a driver shortage?

Hi KevTee I'm an old driver and my best tip for new HGV drivers is get another career. I REALLY MEAN IT. All the best Jim.
I understand you might not of enjoyed the job jim but many people including myself really enjoy the career. With all due respect it gets really tiring hearing hearing other drivers telling people to stay away from the industry, I have never understood why driver stick with it when they detest the job so much. There is a job in this industry to suit everyone, the key is to recognise your needs and seek the job that suits you rather than persevering with a job you hate.

Passed in August class 1. No experience. Literally contact every large agency in my area and within 30 miles. Haven't got a single shift and I ring with my availability and chasing them up very regularly.
Applied for jobs, again send the CV then a follow up call to try and stand out. I've applied to local places known for taking new drivers but their either full or strangely require a years experience so people saying "they take new drivers" are full of shit. I've applied for both class 1 and 2. Literally every job on indeed monster reed total jobs that doesn't say for insurance we need 1 years experience. I think it's like 30+ jobs. Not a soul will touch me with most responses being "more experience is needed for this role"
I spent like 2.6k putting myself through class 1&2 and feel I've just wasted it.
The whole driver shortage thing must be a bit of a untruth because I live also near a port and where I live is known for being a place others come to for driving jobs but there it absolutely nothing for new drivers which leads me to think this shortage isn't what it's made out to be.
If the older generation leave/retire and the newer generation aren't being giving the chance to gain experience where will the haulage industry be in 20 years
It's crazy.
We just need to chance to gain experience. They want us to have experience but won't give us it.
Hello lad. I'm a fairly new Class One driver myself, where are you based? I'm in the South West and I've had a good amount of success finding both Class One and Two work. Does your region have a fairly high rate of unemployment? If so it might be worth looking at outbasing as a Tramper or widening your search to other area's as your problem could be in your locality as opposed the nation as a whole. Let us know if you've had any success. Good luck.

You used to be able to go straight for your class 1 but not any more. Gotta take that Class 2 first but once you have that, you automatically get provisional entitlement for Class 1 AND you don't have to resit the theory etc again ;)

I’ve got a good tip for new lgv drivers , don’t waste your life learn a decent trade you’ll earn better money and you won’t have to work 60 plus hours to get it either
