Forget the Newton meters. Tighten it to German specs. Goudentight!
Wow, glad I did this service myself! A pal of mine took his bike to the dealer for a new rear tire. A few days later he was driving on the freeway and the drive belt came loose. Suspect the dealer forgot to tighten the axle to spec as it destroyed the belt, the left tensioner, and the entire day. The only weird thing I came up against was the oil filter. I used the Chrome filter spec'd for this bike, but it only threaded on about 3 full turns before starting to tighten. The original black filter threaded on about 10 full turns. I checked and rechecked the P/N's and I definitely used the correct one. Next oil change I am switching to K&N.
Very informative! Thank you! I'll be picking up my 2016 RK very soon and will refer back to this video. Keep 'em coming!
Thank you very much for this video man! I can't wait to do the work myself! The thing I loved about this video over the last 6 ive looked at is you have a light highlighted on the areas you're specifically talking about and it makes it that much better to understand what exactly you're saying and where you're referring too instead of having to guess what you're talking about! For that im gonna subscribe! Cheers brother! Safe rides!
Thanks for watching, and ride safe!
Very nicely done! This gives me confidence to save some money AND get some bonding/wrench time in on my new bike!
Awesome, thanks for watching!
Really useful video, thank you very much for posting. Greetings from the UK!
+Paul Sawyer Thank you for watching!
Thank you for the video. I’m getting ready to do my 1000 mile service on my Electra glide limited.
Thanks for watching!
Every other site I have seen uses teflon paste on the oil plugs rether than locktite.
Who doesn't get the 1K service thrown in with the purchase? No offense fellas, but if you're dropping $$$$$ on a new HD, that 1 month out service @ 1K should def be a part of that sale.
I just bought a 2018 Fatboy 114. No free oil change offered, I did ask for it. Went online to make my first payment the other day. Harley charges me a $3 fee for making my payment online. HD gets you at every turn.
@@williamjohnson1606 lol you knew it was gonna be expensive. But they over pricing every little thing. They robbing people legally. I love my RoadKing and if it was cheap and easy to get it wouldn’t feel ass good to have
Thanks. Just used your video with the book to do mine. One thing that surprised me. On my bike (2020 street glide) the trans plug is directly behind the oil. So I did the oil, filled it back up and then went to drain the trans. The oil that came out was so new looking I was sure I was letting out fresh engine oil. I triple checked the manual and it was the trans oil. Also there are a few other things you do in accordance with the manual like checking steering stem bearings which amounts to lifting it up and making sure there’s no play. And a few other things. Probably just stuff added to get that first service up to the $400 mark at the dealership but I did them and documented it all in a notebook with pictures that way if I have issues I can verify to HDMC that I’ve done my due diligence.
Awesome, thanks for watching!
Can you please do a video on checking the steering bearings please much appreciated this video is good I ordered my redline oil and waiting to do my service on my 21 roadglide
I have a 2018 rk blk like urs. Luv it.
Thx for sharing...
Thank you for watching!
Hello and thank you for the amazing video. will you document the 5000 mile service as well?
Again, thank you for sharing knowledge.
I will definitely do a video on the 5k mile service - currently at 3500. Stay tuned, and thanks for watching!
Thank you. Subscribed. I am at 1010.
Nice work. Can i set up a appointment with you? I think June I think i will have a 1000 miles on my new harley ultra :) Thanks for the video
My local, Delbarton WV, harley shop did my 1k service for $245 tax and all and changed motor, trans, primary oil. Also checked torque and checked my recall on my '17 street glide special. I didn't think that was horrible price. $500 and I would have prob did it myself. Thanks for video, very informative.
That's definitely a good price on the service, most dealers around where I live charge around the $500 mark. Thanks for watching!
I just had my 1K service done on my 2017 Road Glide Special at my Harley dealer(I bought the VIP plan so all of my service and oil changes are free for the first 3 years). They charge 465.00 for the 1K and 5K.It was still a great video to watch, thanks for sharing!
Free if you do it self it’s really just oils etc
Great video!! Thanks for sharing.
Great video. Very informative
Thanks for watching!
Really nice bike 👍🏻
I grease the steering head bearings, esp at the 1st service as I find they are skimpy with the grease there.
great informative video
+007bondson1 Thanks for watching!
Nice Tutorial! 🤙🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed, and thanks for watching!
its fluid changes of course you can do it!!!
Throwing that synthetic oil (not recommended from manufacturer) in your new HD voids the warranty, there is a reason you don't perform the 1K service on your own. If anything occurs with your bike that oil is going to be inspected and you will be found accountable for the damage internally. You check those master cylinders for the brakes to make sure vibrations within the first 1K are not forcing bolts out. All and all great video!! Just be sure your warranties are not void with the types of oils.
Re: Wrong type of oil. You must "whinny" when you walk because that sure sounds like horse hockey.
ahh the two slippery of an oil theory...
thats so 2001 and pure Bravo Sierra.
Where did you buy all your parts/fluids?
How many miles over my 1000 mile service can I go over the 1000 miles without damage to my motor? I'm no where close to home.
What type of oil on the gear ?
I just got my 2021 RG 1000 mile service about 3 weeks ago. Now I have a oil leak. Im a new rider so im sending it back. But I suspect it was a problem from the dealer. Smh
How much maintenance do Harley Davidson motorcycle have? Oil change, valve checks etc?
All of the typical maintenance for most motorcycles is applicable to a Harley. Thanks for watching!
Hydraulic valve adjusters so no maintenance
My 2012 Electra Glide has 34000 miles. I change the fluids every 3000. Mobil 1 15w50 oil and redline tranny and primary. I changed the brake pads at 22000 miles. That’s it. Never a leak or hiccup from my black beauty. Also, at 10000 miles switched out the rear tire to Michelin Commander 2. Went to 31000 before changed out. Changed the front tire to the same at 15000. Still on and tons of tread.
Very little metal filings on the drain plugs, and the oil was "reasonably clean".
Your lucky if the dealer changes the oil for 500 bucks at 1000 mile service
Never owned a new Harley, but do they void your warranty if you do your own work? Or ad and modify things?
The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prevents any company from voiding a warranty due to DIY maintenance assuming proper specs and procedures were followed. Modifying, however, typically voids the warranty of the specific component you modify but not normally of an entire vehicle (if you alter an engine, the engine warranty may be voided for instance). Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
Also, most mods involve little more than a pair of slip-ons and maybe a Stage 1 AF. All one need do is install a V&H fuel pack, save your original map, remove/remap the bike if you think any of the "mods" caused whatever issue you may be experiencing. It'll read like a clean factory install. Beyond this, aside from screwing up an electrical component/system with shoddy install work, there isn't much which can legally be claimed by a manufacturer as causing a defect. They can try, but there's lots of laws against said practice.
How long would you say doing this process will take from start to finish?
Just a couple hours, nothing crazy. Thanks for watching!
Good video but what the dealer told you about oil is bogus.... any oil is not too "Slippery" .... Oil simply gives a lubricating film to parts that contact each other. The correct oil will minimize contact... also known as film strength...
Amsoil 20/50 in all three holes. None better.
During a real 1 k service there is a lot more performed. There is a critical fastener check such as your axle torque, wheel alignment would be done with the belt tension, brake fluid inspected, charging system check, etc. This video is good maintenance but not necessarily a 1,000 mile service.
True, or at least they are supposed to do all that. Now that said, Harley should do the 1000 mile service for free as part of the warranty. But no, Harley just uses that as another excuse to price gouge you. Well fuck that, just learn how to work on your own damn bike. Save yourself A LOT OF MONEY.
22.6 N m is what your wrench dialed in to - you do realize that this is residual torque? What does the factory spec say the torque for that nut is? I’m guessing about 15% higher. Your nut is going to loosen up in the next 24 hours and will probably be below spec.
Doing your own service? What effect does that have on the warranty???
As long as you document the services properly, your warranty is unaffected. Thanks for watching!
Is this the same for a 2017 Harley Breakout?
The overall items should be the same or similar, but you should consult your owner's manual or a service manual to find a complete list for the 1000 mile maintenance specific to your bike. Some items may not be covered in this video. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
from what I understand, Harley Davidson only changes the motor oil on a 1K oil change, transmission & primary are done along with motor @ 5K.
The service manual says change all 3 @ 1k.
Marc & Monalisa Forever Miley
Clutch adjustment?
On my 2015 owner's manual, the oil plug is the one to the left. Not center.
You should definitely follow your manual, as your bike may be different from mine in configuration. Thanks for watching!
Excelente
2008 ultra classic oil change
I've read, heard, and seen that the HD dealer has to do the first 1,000 mile service or the warranty is void? After the first 1,000 mile service you can do your own BUT you have to maintain accurate records for warranty purposes.
The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prevents that from being the case (at least in the US), with the caveat that you need to retain accurate records for all services. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
Harley Davidson is not above putting "fake news" out there, in order to scare a consumer, when it comes to their products.
Wow‼️THANKS FOR THE DEALER MAINTENANCE FEE$. HA‼️
I did that twice, just kept playing back to back
Very strange, that's definitely an issue on CZcams's end, not mine. I'm sorry you aren't able to view the video...perhaps CZcams will resolve the issue soon, it might be a systemwide problem since I have been having replies to comments fail to post.
What about fork oil
Don't mean to be picky but shouldn't you have adjusted the clutch, whilst you had the Derby covet off
Depends on if it's in need of adjustment - mine happened not to be. Thanks for watching!
Hydraulic clutch, no adjustment
@@bryanbabb5185 👍👍
hey what book are you using
If you're talking about where I'm getting the service checklist, it is in the owner's manual. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
With my old Harley I change the engine oil every 20,000 miles whether it needs it or not LOL
Lol I just got a full 1000 mile service at a HD dealer in St.Louis while I was on the road....i rode up with no appointment and they put my bike directly on the lift...hour and a half later I was on the road again for 250 dollars out the door. While I got free coffee and breakfast and test rode 3 other bikes. Well worth 250 bucks.
Ya lost me a Newton meter......you freaking rock
So the Japanese part didn’t fit?
What happened to your SUZUKI GSX 1250FA
+CAPTLIEPS Still have the sport bike one...I will have a new video coming out next week about it in fact. Stay tuned and thanks for watching!
I have a 1983 SUZUKI GS750T since new,still runs great. WHY a HARLEY ? Check out my video's
Gd job thx
Thanks for watching!
But you didn’t record that service with Harley .
You don't need to as long as you record all of your maintenance procedures...just make sure to "dot your I's and cross your T's." Thanks for watching!
Punching a hole in the filter releases the pressure.
👍👍👍😎
what is a jiffy stand
The factory kickstand - the long, spring assisted one HD uses. Thanks for watching!
2002 roadking manual says use straight 50 oil
can i use 20 w 50
I would use whatever is recommended for your particular bike in your manual. Thanks for watching!
thank you
This isn’t a 2002 !
Got 999 thousand miles on my gold wing Harley can't even touch that
You should check your owners manual because it calls for steering head bearings adjustment at 1000 miles
I'm a professional tech. I seriously recommend you have the dealer do your first service. They do more than just change fluids, if anything has worked itself loose or any problems are starting to materialize an experienced tech will be able to spot it. It's also good to have your 1000 mile break in service on record at a dealer so if you have a problem with your motor later the warranty company can't use it as an excuse.
Since a special machine is needed to bleed the brakes on ABS bikes, my plan is to let the techs service the bike at 20,000 and 40,000 miles which will be every two years. I will keep up with the services in between. Hopefully the techs will be more diligent than the tech who fixed my fairing vent under warranty and forgot to reconnect one of the speakers.
Ahhh, those warranty reps have a thousand and one excuses for not covering. My least favorite part of working at Saturn all those years ago.
Nothing against any tech, but I know I'm straight when I work on mine.
Peace of mind, and it lets her know I care.
Superstitions are a bitch.
If can't fix it don't get it to much money
250 dollars charge at my 1,000 mi service
That sounds like a very good deal at your dealership. Thanks for watching!
415 at my dealership for the 1,000 mi service
Dyno oil... is dinosaurs Based???
Look up fossil fuels for more information on that front - "dino oil" is another term for non-synthetic oil. Hope that helps clarify, and thanks for watching!
Thanks, I didn't know. Good video..
Dyno....mite!
Thousand Miles service from Harley-Davidson all it is is a freaking oil change for $400 $500.
Why the hell people keep taking to harley thiers other bike repair shops
You missed a bunch of things....
would not play, just stupid commercial!
You need to wait for the commercial to run through, though often there is a skip button that appears after 5 seconds.
Get a Honda cheaper and don't have to work on it near as much Harleys are like Biden not dependable
Harley a rip offf
I think you got the steps wrong.
Step one: Put an ad on craigslist.
Step two: Buy a real bike.
I bet you ride a Honda Jackass!!
HA!
You do that every thousand miles?
What do you ride a MoPed 🏍? Lmao 😂
And receive a whole new set of problems. Owned many rides and all are expensive. If you can’t afford it, stay away from it. It’s ok not to ride. Just follow your heart and your passions. USMC/USAF Ret.
