      In a story or cartoon or movie or book, everything mentioned serves a purpose, and nothing is accidental, so if in Scooby Doo, the background is a brighter colour than the rest of the scene, that means there will be movement there, and if some details are given in the early part of a book, that means they will probably resurface by the end. And here, if someone's stroll is mentioned it is because it was a remarkable one. They would not mention it otherwise.

    Curious fact: before the battle of Tours, Odo tried to ally with Uthman ibn Naissa, a muslim governor in Catalonia. Odo acceepted and his dauther got married with Uthman. Both wanted to maintain their independence from Charles Martel and the emir of Cordoba.
    At the end they failed. Odo has submit to the Frankish. On the other side Uthman was executed, his head was sent to Damascus and his wife (the daugther of Odo) became a concubine in the harem of the caliph.

    Odo took a huge risk by not committing his entire force during the 1st attack but it was a calculated one which will eventually pay off because he had as his disposal some fresh troops and, together with the rest that fought earlier, managed to surprise and defeat an unsuspecting Arab force.
    As for Charles Martel, either by his own judgement or that of others around him, he eventually made the right choice by not providing help to Odo because everything will turn out to be what he really wanted from the get go.

    • @johnnythreetimes3600

      If he committed his entire force to the first attack, he loses and then the city falls... it would be better to sacrifice the city rather than throw away his whole army in a battle he knows he cant win.

    The people who fought these battles were our ancestors. Europe was formed by battle after bloody battle, but today people seem oblivious to the sacrifices made by our ancestors. Our freedoms came at a PRICE. Most people today can hardly name a single battle fought back in the day. This channel is great.

    I like your style, would really like to see Catalaunian Fields 451, Tours 732 and some of the battles of the Reconquista. Too bad there is not a way to script a heavily modded version of Attila Total War to force battle outcomes and use the top down camera for your graphics, because I would totally help you make those. I've got my 12-year-old nephew hooked on your channel, he retains the information a lot more than just hearing me talk about these battles lol.

    Just a little note to add :
    In France the latter battle of Tours is known as the battle of Poitiers and is still nowadays discussed mostly when the debate is about the cohabitation of catholics originated and Muslim originated French people. The French government of the late XIXth century wrote the history of the French nation notably by taking the battle of Poitiers as an example of French bravery against the Muslim invader. And depending on your history teacher, you can clearly hear that version of the story.
    I love how your video clearly shows that the battle of Poitiers is more a strategic political move from Charles Martel than an act of Catholic bravery against the heretic (even tho it was also the case but was of lesser importance to his eyes).

      @TheCatbutcher Před 4 lety

      @@JoeSmith-sl9bq To be clear, I've never said that. I'm just saying the way this battle is politically used nowadays to defend point of views is not so true. Yes this was an invasion, but not that threatening compared to Charles Martel power forces. Ideologies have twisted the complexity of the politics and turned it into simple monofocused visions.

      At the time of the battle of Tours/Poitiers, the precise nature of Islam was quite unknown to franks, even theologians:
      A fair number still believed it was simply a non-trinitarian variant of christianity, as it was common (especially among early medieval germanic tribes - arianism).
      Thus, Islam at this time has often been confused with a rather common kind of christian heresy.
