Wheelchair user here. I really appreciated your coverage of what is and is not accessible, but does the bus have a wheelchair lift?
Thanks- I forgot to talk about the bus. London buses do have a wheelchair lift, but it's complicated. There's only one space onboard for a wheelchair user, so if someone else is in it, you're out of luck and will have to wait for the next one. I've also heard anecdotally of some buses driving off without letting the wheelchair user on. So the short answer is "yes, but". If you want to play it safe, you might have to get another taxi.
@@JDraper Agreed, to often people don't talk about the accessibility issues of travel which many of us need to know. I'd also love to hear more about London history & Disability/ Disabled Londoners.
Very few countries city is like Singapore, where almost all buses have wheelchair space and the bus driver have to get down and help the user.
@@zhen86 From what I've seen as a non-wheelchair using but frequently bus using Londoner, the drivers don't generally get out to help wheelchair users (and there's no other member of staff on a bus), but they do press a button to deploy a ramp from the door at the middle of the bus to let wheelchair users get on and off near the spot on the bus for parking the wheelchair. Wheelchair users don't use the doors at the front of the bus that others use as an entrance but not an exit.
There's also a special blue stop button by the wheelchair space onboard, which you press when you want to get off (instead of one of the regular passenger stop buttons). Then the driver knows to deploy the ramp for you.
Should add that if a bus driver does drive past you without stopping they're breaking their rules and can be reported to TfL. Also wheelchair users have the legal right to use the wheelchair space on a bus over buggies and pushchairs.

I'm a tetraplegic (that is, what a civilian would call a 'quadriplegic'), and, living in Western Australia, am pretty sure that I will never travel overseas, let alone visit London. I don't care about the grey skies, and I don't care about the road traffic in the way of the footage you were trying to collect. For the last half an hour I got to feel like an able-bod again, and got to see rather a lot of your home city, albeit vicariously. It has made my day.

My grandfather was in a similar position for 10-15 years. I learned a LOT about making the most of life from him. He had a lot of "screen time," and my grandmother would read civil war books for him nearly daily. Also well used were books on tape.
If we had today's technology then, I've no doubt he'd be making the most of it.
I try to be among the number of those making the most of life. I've carried those lessons from him for the last 30+ years, or perhaps they have "carried" me. 😊

Plus you did not have to use those London squat toilets that thankfully have been replaced by Western toilets since 1990.
@@Moksha-Raver what squat toilets. I’m a native Londoner (been travelling around London since the 1970s) and haven’t ever seen yet alone used a swat toilet here.

I always leave London feeling like I've barely scratched the surface.
When I went there as a kid, my family went for a guided ferry tour with a super funny guide and saw the Orbit Tower. We even bought a cup with a straw that surrounds the cup like the strange structural pieces of the Orbit. And the slide was super fun too!

Also: overcast days can be lovely for photography and videography - the clouds are like a giant diffuser, softening the light from the sky, eliminating harsh shadows on people’s faces. Damp surfaces are often more beautiful than dry surfaces, particularly with certain architectural details rendered in stone. Plants can also look more lush and healthy. So, no need to worry. You did a great job.
I loved the footage of the Autumn leaves on the pathway, too.

Absolutely agree that it means the world. I'm not (physically) disabled but as someone with a relative who uses a walker/cane and a partner who sometimes struggles walking long distances, this is incredibly helpful and it's just so wonderful to see the casual inclusiveness. It's so encouraging to see more people treating these sorts of considerations as a normal part of plans rather than an afterthought (or worse).

25 years ago, I spent a month in London and walked everywhere in the travel zones 1 and 2 and used the tube for when the weather was bad. Older me is not wheelchair-bound, but my physical strength and stamina are severely diminished due to strong medication, so when I travel, I do look for accommodation for wheelchairs. Stair-free access is invaluable. Accommodations help every one.
You should totally turn this into a small book that people can buy from a shop at the start location, shove in their pocket and read as they follow the route you have advised - you could also do it as a eBook. It'll be like having you as a tour guide! Probably easier to do than watching a video while you walk. Also, more space to put in things to look out for on route!

Moreover, the people who would be most interested in an in-person tour are not likely to be exactly the same people as those who would highly value a written or spoken guide that they can take along when they create their own adventures.

Not to be taken as a dis in any way, I think it’s quite savvy and the content is great, so it’s a win win for everyone

I’d love to see a “back alley” tour or one that focuses on less trodden or more eccentric parts of the city center. There’s lot of people that want to avoid the more touristy parts or just can’t handle massive crowds.

I second this! The touristy spots are touristy for a reason but often soooo far removed from the actual everyday life of the people. I live close to Berlin and while I have seen the historical stuff, my experience of Berlin is massively different than the tourist experience. I like to immerse myself in other cities the same way I know my own.
When you're in Trafalgar Sq you can visit the National Gallery, which is free, and use the toilets there, which are also free and cleaner than the ones in the square. And you can also look at some nice paintings.

Yes, also the National Portrait Gallery which is just around the corner - which also has some nice paintings but they're selected primarily for being of notable people rather than for being nice.

I saw the tower of London when I was about 7 (I am a Texan). I was there with my grampa. When we were walking by the dry moat, all covered in green grass, he pointed it out and asked me "do you know what that is?" I looked at him like he'd said the silliest thing, and I answered, "the lawn".
He used to laugh about that till the end of his days.
If you happen to arrive at St. Pancras a bit early, around 9-30, the British Library's Treasures gallery, just left of their lobby, is a fabulous but absolutely not strenuous way to get into the sightseeing mood.
Do they still have the gallery (3rd floor?) of all of the manuscripts? It's brilliant and people don't know about it. It has original manuscripts from musicians and writers, there's the original Magna Carta and such.
@@cijmo The Treasures gallery (aka Sir John Ritblat Gallery) has that sort of thing. Note that you can't absolutely guarantee any particular item will be there when you visit; it sort-of evolves over time. There are other galleries at lobby level, including the PACCAR gallery right next to the Treasures, which usually houses pay-to-enter temporary exhibitions. The upper floors are mostly reserved for academic study, though there are some spaces for smaller exhibitions.
This is great! Thank you for not only giving a great tour, but mentioning the accessibility! As an ambulatory wheelchair user, I really appreciate knowing what is and isn’t accessible so I can plan how to spend my walking energy. I definitely couldn’t do this in just a day, but spread out, this video makes me feel confident I can see what I want to see in London between using my chair and doing some walking.
Same, for the time being with a walker, and on a really good day forearm crutches. I expect to "graduate" into a wheelchair within the next 1-5 years, though, depending on my luck.
I agree as a wheelchair user this was a welcome guide to my favorite place to visit. My wife has never been and I think next year when we come this will be our guide for the first day!
Same! I've recently started walking with a cane and knowing where I can sit along the way is super helpful. And knowing where there are only stairs, too. I went to the UK back in '97 and trekked all over for 2 months. I was 30 and super fit, so I didn't pay attention to stairs, distance, etc. I'm looking forward to going back in the next couple of years. And there is no way in heck I'm only going to give London a single day... so I know I can take all this and more in!
I remember I went to the Tower about ten years ago, and there was a child in a wheelchair in tears because there was so little he could do there, while all his classmates were running around and seeing so much more than he could. His aide was commenting to another adult that she wished that they had been told how little he could do, because they would have found something else for him to do that day.
Would love a "off the beaten path" episode. pick 2 or 3 boroughs and have a really packed day. Something for day 3 of a visit XD

I think there's a"flag closet" in the palace barracks with a16th century oak chest, but there's only room for like 5 nations' worth of flags in there so there's an official whose main job is to ferry flags between Buckingham palace and a warehouse in Twickenham

They test double-deckers by loading up the top floor with sacks to represent fully occupied. Then they drive them round tight corners and skid them. They are incredibly stable. They can tilt 28 degrees from vertical with the top fully laden without a problem. They just don't want you standing on the upper deck because it does move more than the lower deck, and you're far more likely to stumble, fall and end up on another passenger.

I like the shots of you walking silently looking at the camera. Now a travel vlogger would be talking into the camera to narrate as they go. However I also know Brits will think you are a gormless wonder or worse an American if you do. I have had the pleasure of visiting all of the sites you feature but never ever came even close to being as efficient and accomplishing as much as you do here. You are worth twice whatever you charge for your guide services.
We were just there around American Thanksgiving, did a lot of this so I can 100% confirm and endorse this tour! The wisest thing ever uttered by a King of England: "Never pass up the opportunity to use the toilet." Your selfie with a "Beefeater" was the Yeoman Warder who did our tour at the Tower - free and excellent if you have the time! We didn't see the pelicans or parakeets, though. Metrology/history of science nerds should stop at the "Imperial Standards of Length" set in the wall just down and left from the statue of George IV in Trafalgar. My suggestion if you only had one more day in London would be day 2 at the British Museum where the artifacts are of "complex provenance" but are an incredible sampling of human civilization. This trip was also my first time in Greenwich to see the Cutty Sark, the pedestrian tunnel, the Royal Observatory (yet more history of science nerdery!!!) and enjoyed lunch at the market.
What a fun tour. At this point in my life, this is the closest I'll get to London, but even on a dreary day I enjoyed the tour. Thanks.

My one-day London trip was from hotel in S. Kensington via tube to The Tower. Down the Thames on a river boat to Greenwich for the National Maritime Museum and The Observatory. Back on the Docklands Light Rail, transfer to the tune for Westminster, walk back through the parks to dinner and then our hotel where I collapsed asleep from all the walking.
Could you perhaps do a collab with Jessica Kellgren-Fozard, her wife Claudia and their son Rupert for a toddler-friendly London tour? It could then double/triple as a wheelchair accessibility and dietary restrictions accomodations video. (Yes, that is a challenging combo, but it could be epic if y'all managed to do it)

Amazing video Draper! I had planned a tour for some Guatemalan friends last summer from St Paul's - Southbank to London Eye & Big Ben - St James' Park - Buckingham Palace - Piccadilly Circus - Covent Garden, but it was too much walking and I should have included more buses! Back when I was a tour guide on the jump on busses, that shopping centre was one of my special tips. This is a good way to cram in all the must-haves and I love the accessibility tips. I'm no longer a tour guide, but I am the one my foreign workmates asks for tips.

So while a lot of this is stuff I've done on previous trips, the fact you drop this the before i am going on a 18 hour whirlwind trip to london night coaches there and back and all is very convenient timing if i suddenly start scrambling for things to do.

We visited London about 10 years ago, and actually quite by accident did much of this, though not in one day. The walk along the south bank of the Thames was lovely, and you get to see that Tower Bridge is not the same as London Bridge.
Tip if you want to see the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, if you think you’ve figured out when it’s early enough to get a good spot, it’s not early enough, get there VERY early as it’s usually quite crowded long before the guard change happens! (Actually it was quite disappointing , so feel free to skip. We got to see the Guard Change in Copenhagen a few years later, it was out in an open square and not behind a big fence with pillars, so we actually SAW something!)

I had one day to spend in London. I chose to keep it simple. I took a leisurely walk along the south side of the Thames.
I didn't go into many places. Just looked at the architecture. The brickwork. The people. Crossed the bridge and went into the financial district. I ate a fantasticly British (and expensive) meal at the Gherkin. Took some fantastic photos. Then, I met up with my father for dinner. (I forget where).
He was in London for business. Unbeknownst to us, he already had advanced cancer. 10 weeks later, he was gone. I am so glad I had that time with him. That quiet day walking along the Thames was one of the best moments of my life.
Fab tour! If you want to save a bit of money, I'd recommend paying for the Tower Bridge Museum instead of the Tower of London. As a family of 5 it saved us about £60. You get great views over the city from the top, and it suited our engineer/slightly squeamish children much better 😂
That inter-wall space at the coinage house is my favorite place in the Tower as well!

I'll watch every single London video you do. I am American, and I spent 5 months in London in 1991 and all I want to do is go back. I may never get to, and I'm getting too old to do the kind of walking I'd want to do, but it's something I dream about. I really regret not going to the Tower when I was there, and I might spend 2 whole days in the British Museum if I ever got back.

Stopping the video before the end to comment that this landlocked American thinks pelicans are very special! I had the honor or hosting one overnight in my bathroom when it had been found grounded during migration season. I just needed to feed it, give it water, and find a very large box to transport it to a waterfowl expert! It was a lovely (if messy) houseguest!

Great video! Eleven years ago, I had a single day to look around London when on a business trip and all I managed to see was the Piccadilly Circus, a walk through Soho, the British Museum, and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Would've loved to have had something like this back then.

I saw a parakeet in Victoria Park once. Don't think we ever got a clear idea of where those even came from, but I've heard a number of stories.
There have been a few investigations, but the concensus seems to be that they were decended from escaped pets in the 60s and 70s

First of all - your face as you walked and filmed yourself. 😳 I’m not sure how comfortable you felt whilst doing this, but I was feeling second hand awkward-nessss the entire time...every time.
Next - I suspect that some of the UK travel vloggers change the colours/s of the sky in the edit (depending upon their skills, budget etcetera etcetera).

I have a different kind of disability, namely severe social anxiety on top of some other things. The part I appreciated a lot on a personal level was how you gave specific instructions for what you might think are nobrainer tasks, such as "how to buy an oyster card", "how to board a bus", "how to get access to the toilet" etc. For someone like me that's some life-saving advice, even when not on a tour!

This was brilliant. You are an absolute gem. During your trip back down the Mall to Trafalgar I thought “ My god, she must be knackered.” Hope you had a lovely rest and dinner after. American here. I gathered from context that "heaving" probably meant 'crowded'. The only other meaning I knew of with "heaving" with food is, well, you never want to eat THERE again.

Love it ! I would definitely also like to see a "London tour on a budget" video, or even some more variations, like what to do on your last day after you've seen all of the major landmarks of London, IE all of the underrated stuff.
