You're going to deal with the yearly rent raises no matter where you live in NYC. Unless you get a rent-stabilized or rent controlled apartment or maybe you should consider buying because if you can afford to pay $3k+/month in rent, you may as well buy.

I think that would be a good idea if they were certain they were going to stay in New York or the surrounding area. It would seem Bart moves around a lot. An apartment gives a bit more flexibility with no maintenance.
I agree. Regardless of whether they intend to stay in New York or not, they could always have it as an investment property. Sinking all that money into rent, it might as well be paying off a mortgage.
Often, the hoa maintenance fees, property taxes, etc in NYC don't justify this sort of investment. Especially now that SALT taxes are no longer tax deductible

For others, if you're unsure if your NYC apartment is rent stabilized, if it is, you should have signed a rent stabilization rider with your lease papers. And, of course, when you're looking for a new apartment, look for a rent stabilized unit. The problem is, there just isn't a lot to choose from, and an apartment with a spectacular view like Stella's is not going to be hard for a landlord to rent. But Bart did the right thing by negotiating, without getting a lawyer involved.
One sensible way to think about it is will a move cost more than the rent increase, including the stress and aggravation of a move? If it will, you might want to stay for one more year. If Bart's going to be in Abba Dabbadoo much longer, I would think Stella might like being in a more convenient location to the airport. There's always a risk to a move though, because you don't know the next place will really be like until you move in.

Moving always brings back to me very TIRED memories, so I guess I'm not a big fan, but considering the circumstances, it could be a good thing! Rent prices are always going up here in Brazil too (not by the thousands but it always goes up for sure!).

How do you pack that hard case? I like to use a luggage rack both at home and in hotel. The hard case opens like a butterfly and does not fit on luggage racks. I will not place it on floor or bed so curious how do you pack it?

Rent is always gonna keep going up. You should buy something and then you can always rent it out if you and Bart have to move again until you come back. A mortgage won't keep going up each year. :)

You flew 7 hours to London in Economy!!! I really feel for you. Unpacking after a trip? Easy - just toss most everything in the wash, re-pack toiletries, clean shoes, done. I was wondering when the apartment-looking video would come up. It would be difficult to move since you're there by yourself, unless you pay movers to do packing and everything. Calculate that cost against the negotiated rent increase. Love that Franny's back in the picture.

I donât know if I could LIVE in NYCâŠbut if I visited, Iâd love to stay somewhere with the HUGE windows, where you can just lay there at night and see the beautiful building and such.
You should consider Jersey city downtown. You will get so much more space with the same price. There are many high rise apartment buildings in JC Downtown. It's quick ride to the city via Path. Check it out!:)

Welcome Home! Wow, the views from the apartment you toured were amazing! I guess you have to figure out the cost of moving and prorate that amount over 12 months. The hassle might not be worth the moving expenses. You might only break even. However, I can barely balance my checkbook, so I probably should not be giving financial advice......haha

So....if you do move and the owner rents it out to someone else, does the rent go back down to the original price or is it just now advertised at the higher price? It seems so stupid. Itâs better for the owner to have one good long term tenant rather than an endless cycle of short terms. If the owner is putting up the rent by $500, which is ridiculous, I would assume that means they want to end the lease and want you out.
I love the apartment you live in now, but I REALLY loved that apartment you looked at in the vlog. It seems huge (for NYC). No way would I ever stay in a place where the landlord increased the rent by $500. Thatâs insanity! I hope you can find a place soon! And I love your glasses! Are they Warby Parkerâs?
I always move each year. To me personally the increase is not worth it (depending on the apartment complex and amenities ) and I live in Texas so for you I canât even imagine the struggle stress it puts on you specially without Bart. Hope you find a place soon (if you decide to move) if not hope Bart can get it down is insane $500 but I totally understand is New York.

I was hoping for more info. How long is Bart going to be in Abu Dabi? When do you have to go back to work? Did Franny fly back, or did you drive from Ohio? Moving is a pain, but if you aren't really in love with that place, a change of view is sometimes nice. I moved cities 5 times in 7 years (hotel business). Once I found where I wanted to be I stayed. You are very good with change!

That is usual that the owner of apartments want to raise the rent or lease. When you like the area you live in then I think you should not move but stay in the apartment where you are. You said earlier that you love to live in this apartment, then I see no reason to move again.
If you think the raise is too much and want to move then I think you should check the raise of the new apartment after the lease goes out.
