Love ya Mike! Great stuff. I met Elvin when I was 15. It was a big deal for me, as he was my hero at the time (still is). Elvin shook my hand real tight and asked me what I played. I said drums and he burst into this cackling Dracula laughter. It was a great bonding moment. But then he noticed my friend standing there, and, because Elvin was such a gentleman, he asked my friend what he played. He said trombone. Elvin seemed like he wasn't expecting that, and replied "beautiful instrument." We both remember that moment fondly. As for Mike, he played with my pops, who was a great pianist, and was really cool to me when I was coming up. I remember one time on a gig I got some shit for something I was trying to play, and Mike happened to be there. He came up to me on the break and said "Hey man, if they aint hearing what you're trying to do, f@ck em." Really helped me out, for which I will always be grateful to Mike.

That is the tune "Gingerbread Boy" from Elvin's great trio album from 1968 called 'Puttin' It Together'. It is also part of the Mosaic Records box set "Complete Blue Note Elvin Jones Sessions" which is out of print.
