'Can't Part With Partition Memories,' Say Migrants of Independence | Independence Day

  • The partition of India into two unsurmountable parts marks one of the most defining moments in the nation’s chequered history. It was at the very “stroke of the midnight hour” on 15 August 1974 , that India became free from centuries of British dominance.
But in their maiden flight to liberty, both India and Pakistan lost over 2 million people in riots that ensued their independence. Even more were displaced, as India and Pakistan came to symbolise the land of Hindus and Muslims respectively.
Fearing death and humiliation at the hands of the ‘other’, many Hindus in Pakistan moved to or attempted to move across the border to India, while Muslims in India made a dash for Pakistan. Travelling in packed trains and buses, Many were killed on their way, few made it to their intended destinations.

I am a Pakistani, I agree with the statement that the partition was a big miserable story. The leaders from both sides had no control over the aftermaths. A terrible, terrible human tragedy. Both countries are taken over by mindless and heartless extremists!
My mother's family migrated from Punjab, and father's family from Bihar to Pakistan. They were forced to migrate from their ancestral homes, no one wishes to leave their homes where their ancestors have lived for so long.

There is no doubt that Britishers created the situation bywhich india were moving towards balkanization of this land into small pieces and this wasn't a conspiracy of some days/month/years,But it was the set of many british policies by which they ruled us for centuries. The foundation of division had been started from 1857.muslim league and hindu mahasabha types of organizations were the results of britishers far sighted policies of divide and rule.
After britishers, i find Mr jinnah as a major character who made partition possible. He was adamant to create Pakistan on the basis of religion.

My mother tells stories of hiding in fields with her mother (may Allah grant her janat al fardos) telling her to be quiet as sword bearing mobs went by! . Sadly the dream of Kashmir becoming free for them to return to their land has died with so many. Its so sad.
Its amazing how much I’m effected by partition, i was born in the UK yet my heart longs to be able to go back, god willing.
Was partition necessary ... i say this with years of thought, yes, Muslims do not get a fair shout in current day India. However the deaths of even one person on either side was not, that was a direct consequence of the way British rule ended and decisions that they made at the time.

Shut up. This partition was bcoz jinnah wanted to become a leader. Bcoz he feared nehru would be in power only. All the punjabi and sindhi muslims of pakistan are descendants of hindus. Moreover our culture is same; we are all indo-aryans, we speak common languages like punjabi, sindhi, and look same.
Jinnah and his allies seized in the oppurtunity to deepen hindu-muslim divide. Then after that came the hindu mahasabha.
If INA commanded by Netaji won today then this partition wouldnt have happened.
