The Addams Family (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of Ocean's 1992 license-based platformer for the Super Nintendo, The Addams Family.
The Addams Family for the SNES was one of several games that appeared after the release of the popular 1991 movie. Though all of the games based on the movie follow the same basic premise (you run around the non-linear mansion search for family members and cash), the SNES version is probably my favorite among them.
The Addams Family features the typical run-and-jump action that was popularized by Super Mario Bros., and it does very well at mimicking those mechanics. The controls are smooth and Gomez is easy to maneuver around the screen (though his skidding could land you in trouble if you aren't careful!), and the relatively speedy gameplay keeps things moving right along. Stages are loaded with secret areas that hide money, 1-ups, and various power-up items. There is a lot of precision jumping involved which can be tricky until you learn the layouts, but it's never very frustrating since the game hands out 1-ups constantly, and you'll rarely see the Game Over screen. The enemy placement is deliberate and designed to punish you for blindly rushing through, but that becomes easier to handle with time and experience. Overall the game is quite easy, but finding all of the secrets is likely to take a while, and that is a lot of the fun.
The SNES game is virtually identical to the Genesis, Amiga, and Atari ST versions, but it is easily the best version between them. The gameplay is about the same, but the SNES runs away with the presentation prize. The graphics are excellent for such an early game, with nice, big sprites, a lot of varied backgrounds loaded with details and color as opposed to the flat/dithered graphics in the other versions, and a metric ton of parallax scrolling - it's almost too much in the chains level. I know, too much parallax scrolling? I didn't think it was possible either, but this game and Jim Power proved to me otherwise. I was always a huge fan of the hall lined with the family portraits myself. The SNES one also has an excellent soundtrack, but of course, music always was consistently one of Ocean's major strengths. The wavetable synth here sounds way better than the Genesis FM music, and it's extremely catchy.

It's difficult to think how just eight people could make a game this nice and fun.
And hard.
Not that uncommon back then. Still impressive, through.
@@dridrid2008 That's true that this game seems hard especially without "Game Genie" but, the other SNES game of "Addams Family Values" seems much harder since it doesn't give any information on where to go and what to do (you have to find out for yourself on what you are supposed to do) and you play as Fester moving up, down, left, and right. But here on this "Addams Family" game you only move left and right as Gomez.
I just bought a SNES and a huge bundle of games (including Addams Family) oh the memories!!! Can't wait to play this again after so many years.
"The Addams Family is a
highlight in almost 35 years
of game development. The
freedom allowed me by both
[lead programmer] James Higgins
and [game designer and artist]
Warren Lancashire was amazing.
I drew whatever came to mind,
and the vast majority of the
sprites created found their
way somewhere into what
I consider a defining title for
the Super Nintendo.
Although all of the Nintendo
machines look far more
family-friendly than their
console counterparts, the SNES
for me truly looked the part. It
was a games machine for gamers
and probably had more titles that
were worth playing than any
Nintendo system before or since.
It held a very special place in
our household, and just about
every family member had their
personal favourite titles.
My wife and I spent far too much
time battling late into the wee
small hours of the morning on
Bombliss when we had small
children to tend, and then get
to our respective jobs. It was a
truly great console and well
deserves a place in any retro
gamer's collection. Mine is long
gone, but for Zelda, Super Mario
World, Super Metroid and, of
course, The Addams Family 1
and 2, I will always hold it in
very high regard."

one of my fav snes games off all time
this is a real underrated classic
good times! I liked finding the propeller hat to make Gomez fly!
Definitely
I agree: this game is underrated.
An Ocean game that doesn't suck? Whaaaat? Seriously, The Addams Family is a pretty good Mario-style platformer, and it looks damn nice for such an early SNES game.
Me encanto
NintendoComplete Not every Ocean game sucks. I thought Ocean's Jurassic Park games were good.
37:21 You missed the Even Better Read.
Israel Flores You're right, they aren't all bad. Just the great majority of them lol
I thought the Flintstones (the one based on the movie) was pretty good...presentation-wise at least, it was pretty hard, though.
Jester’s Jump still gives me cold sweats 25 years later.
I just bought this game for my collection, yes these retro games are great 🙂
one of my fav video game ! sounds fx, graphics, music, control, animations, level design, everything is soooooo great. So underated for sure!
This was such a difficult game
For me as a
Kid. This guy makes it look so easy
This game was so good that it got placed as an arcade choice for Nick Arcade in the early 90s
I don't think any of the yellow or red teams choose to play this game in video challenge
Best game ever. Memories of childhood aplenty!
One of my favorite games. Used to rent this a lot. :).
Same..Blockbuster days 😃
Me too. Energy video store
Favorite Super Nintendo game other than Super Mario World.
At Hollywood video for me
Man, it’s scary how well this follows the movie…
45:55 Eyes, fingers, toes.
Another good one. Aside from the slippery controls, this game is awesome. Along with one. Thank you for playing these.
all this time I had no idea you could get a sword
In the amiga version there was no sword. Also no sneakers and golfballs. But a better soundtrack ;-)
@@number8802 I Dint Know that there was golfballs
Same bro ....
I absolutely LOVE the movie and the original show, so it was a nice surprise when the games that came out were actually pretty decent. While it was a rental, I still had fun with it.
So is the Fencer Sword a hidden power up you can only get secretly? Cause it destroys bosses and kinda breaks the game, but it looks like it would be way hard to beat without it.
Man, I can't even remember. I rented this one about the time it came out and don't think I've played it since.
As far as I can remember the sword is only available in two places. The hidden area and in the Library, when trying to save Fester.
And to be honest, you have to be a very good player to get to a boss without taking a hit. So I guess the reward is that the sword destroys bosses super quick!
I hated the movies, but loved the 60's show.
For several years I have been working on the new version of this great game! Look on my channel if you are curious about the result! It's new ;)
Fantastic game whit incredible music Totally loved it when I was a kid good memorias!

I remember my parents buying this game when I was little. I thought I was going to like it. I beat that game at such a young age, I felt accomplished!
I was never able to get through the whole game.
But then again, I was just a kid.
hahaha! i remember this game! i was like, 6 or 7. I've never managed to beat it but it seems to me i got through half of the game. For that young an age, i think i did pretty good! There were just too many nukes and crannies for my little self to keep track and explore.
This game was so bizzare and weird and spooky for me when i was young.
So many memories of this game!!
such nostalgia i played this on a ps2 emulator disc with like 700+ snes games, good times.
Playing this game for the very first time on the Funkey. Loving every minute of it.
AVGN sent me here. And I saw a walkthrough of the game in Top Secret Access guide. So many memories! :)
My childhood memories came flooding back, Actually feel happy for once lol
My first interaction with Addams Family was in that game, Wednesday made me want to play that game again. The nostalgia is big. Today I just finished High School..
"Quicksand, fumes, toxic waste..... it's all ours."
Just curious how bottomless is quicksand
Knowing how to get the sword would of made my childhood little better. If only we had youtube back then.
Really fun game. Lots of hidden stuff and rooms to find.
For several years I have been working on the new version of this great game! Look on my channel if you are curious about the result! It's new ;)
Remember I bought this game cause Mario Kart was sold out at the time, this game was actually fun to play, second SNES game I bought
It's pretty nuts when you find the double secret rooms.
Good old times 🥰 i still play this game
It's so amusing to watch videogame walkthroughs
After seeing game play I have gone back to my childhood memories back in 2010
I loved this game so much!!
God dang it, so many secrets, no wonder I found it so difficult back then.
lol it took me weeks of hard game play to finish this game and I knew less than half those hidden rooms, This was my favourite Snes game.
I'd be very surprised if games like this didn't have an influence on 90s Rareware games. You can definitely see the foundations for such games here, particularly the Banjo Kazooie games.
Well, I've been making a new version for a few years! I'm working on it. Go see on my channel (resent) if you are curious about what it can give! ;)
Wow, I remember this game!
Used to love playing this at the after school club (:
( but I want the golf ball! )
Oh the memories, the sound alone triggers the memories of my younger years....
One of my all time favorites!!
For several years I have been working on the new version of this great game! Look on my channel if you are curious about the result! It's new ;)
This game has perfect music.
Wow. Did NOT expect to watch that whole video haha
They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky...
As an Addams Family fan I have very fond memories of playing this. It's simple, but I guess that's part of its charm. Fun stuff exploring the mansion, little hidden bonus rooms and all.
The movie is a classic, too!~
The Real Sean W. Stewart I have very fond memories of this game too. I beat this game in one sitting when I was a kid lol

The Addams Family started,
When Uncle Fester farted,
Hey farted through the keyhole,
and paralyzed the Cat. 😹
Hhhhh old days I was about to sleep and all of a sudden it came up into my mind and here I am on your channel lol
Loved this game as a kid and was gutted when you didn’t go down the book in the library!
Favorite Super Nintendo game
I only liked this game for a week. After that it made me anxious.
Omg memories of me and my brother playing this when were kids
The other artwork implies this is the movie Addams Family and you're playing as the Raul Julia version of Gomez, but the sprite totally looks like the John Astin version of Gomez from the original TV series.
I would have said it resembled Glenn Tarantos version of Gomez from "The New Addams Family" TV show from the late 90`s
Both were great as Gomez Addams.
Noticed that too!
It looks like Johnny Depp to me lol
For some unknown to me reason I decided to beat this game recently. I have no prior experience with it, I never had SNES when growing up, I never even played it on emulator. But since I really like how it looks and I love everything halloween, I decided I will pick it up even though I'm not great with oldschool platformers. I'm 37 now and man...
Git Gud doesn't even cut it. It's not the first time I'm playing a game aiding myself with solution/videos to get trough, but it's the first time I'm doing it for a platformer WHILE STILL grinding attempt after an attempt like some goddamn maniak. I don't know how anyone is supposed to find all those secrets on their own let alone finish the game without them. Even though I bought a cartridge, I moved to emulator bc of the ability to save. Without it - even with all the extra lives in the beginning - I wouldn't get past the deep fridge. Not that I got much further, but to hell with it. I WILL finish this game no matter what. S**t just got personal.
From the manual: Secret doors exist everywhere; of course, these doorways are usually invisible to the human eye, so exploration of walls and floors in highly recommended. Look out especially for inconsistencies in appearance. it is all very deceptive, but highly rewarding if discovered!
Iv so many happy memories of this game
It's just like Mario World!
Surprisingly good game. The controls feel a bit slippery at first- Gomez moves a little too fast- but soon you get the hang of them.
I like the fact that this blends Mario-style plattforming with the exploration and hub system of Metroid. While there’s a recommended sequence, you can play the game in any order you’d like and the challenge stays pretty much the same, making the game highly replayable.
There is quite a variety of enemies to keep it fresh, and there are tons of secrets. Perhaps way too many. You could finish the game and still not find all the treasure.
I love the games room tune.
Love this video game classic
This IS a great Game x3
And... You found more secrets than me xD
This is a good game to play
This game looks great, is fun to play and sounds good. Who would have thought an Addams Family metroidvania would turn out well?!🤔🤯💪
This game was super addictive but I could never beat it for the life of me...
I wished I knew about the sword all those years ago. I really was having an up hill battle.
This masterpiece is mentioned in my video Video Games Do Furnish a Hobby
I only remember the first part, outside the house. I guess cause I never got past it lol
3:43 🤩Good Work!🤩
Tecnically its a Mario Game with The Addams Family slapped on it.
But its still good.
It's a Zool
I remember the VHS of the movie had an ad for this game in the previews
Missing old days😣
Weird thing that people dont noticed its the Sprite of the Gomez character that is from the black white old series and all the Pictures are from the movie including the Raul Julia's Gomez lol
Wow cool game
Awesome game
After you get the third heart power up, do you have to exit the stage like that?
One of Ocean's better games, definitely. This and Fester's Quest for the NES (which is nowhere near as bad as most make it out to be) remain my favorite Addams Family video games.
yusakug I totally agree, Fester's Quest is awesome. I love it.
Hello I see you a lot in 90's Commercials too. What impeccable taste.
The Real Sean W. Stewart - Thank you so much!
For several years I have been working on the new version of this great game! Look on my channel if you are curious about the result! It's new ;)
I prefer this game to Fester's Quest. The soundtrack isn't *_as_* good, but at least it captures the Addams Family aesthetic well and isn't frustratingly hard.
back in 1996, me and my brother were going to buy a video game on a rainy day. Our parents would let us get just one video game. I wanted to get Adams, but my brother convinced me to get Super Adventure Island. We chose SAI, and this game was left at the store for someone else to enjoy. Sigh...
This is some Damn smooth game play 👍👍👍
This game is way better than Fester's Quest 🤦
I believe I finished this way back when I was young, but I never found half of those secret rooms.
Old times :')
This should be on switch 🌱
@@PokemonShinyLover I can't imagine this generation of gamers would be able to handle this butt-clenching of a platformer. I tried so many times to get into this but it's pure 'Ocean' platforming, slippery controls and all, but with maze like level design thrown in. The game requires such precision that I just couldn't get into it.
I don´t have the minimal idea, when was having 8 years old was can finish this game. Very hard, and tough zones. Now at my 34 is impossible to beat it!!!!
Fantastic
Well, I've been making a new version for a few years! I'm working on it. Go see on my channel (resent) if you are curious about what it can give! ;)
i remember the company Ocean making really good music for their games, i.e. Addams Family and also Robocop 3. i had this game back then but i remember not liking it because it had slippery controls and was hard. i may pick it up cheap online and give it another whirl.
Wish I could go back
lmao the game over screen has 1 ups that's great
Omg remember this game hehehe😁
s
Gomez the Hedgehog
For a 6 year old kid. I didn't miss much of anything on this game. I spent hours on this, figuring it out. ADHD kid, so I probably hyper focused on it
Does this game count as a metroidvania? It's basically one big interconnecting level, where you get upgrades (even if they're pretty much just health).
It almost feels like a combination of "hop and bop" with metroidvania, yet certain elements are also weirdly evocative of Jet Set Willy. The mansion setting, the individually named rooms, and the fixed/linear paths of certain enemies, to name a few.
This was the very first SNES game ever made by Ocean.
This is a fun game to play which I can only beat with "Game Genie." However, it's too bad you can't choose any Addams Family member you want but can only play as Gomez since if you can choose any other (Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Granny, or Fester) the ending would be different for each character.
Despite feeling like you are always running on ice (at least Genesis version), I was always very fond of this title. Addams Family Values is another good one to check out, going with a Fester's Quest style top down view and taking cues from Zelda.
Puggsly's Scavenger Hunt I also kind of like for its ridiculous difficulty. Its hard as nails, but never felt difficult due to bad game-design.
The soundtrack does not sound so atmospheric as Mega Drive Drive version here.
Barely four minutes in and you already have 32 mans.
This is better then the new Addams family game
ssssss chulada de juego recordar es vivir
lo todo todo
CH ingon
This looks like a mix up of the movie and tv series, Like the portraits are Raul Julia but the Gomez sprite resembles John Astin from the show
