- 15:35 after re-time. Sorry about the desync, capturing with a Dazzle on OBS is weird. And headphone warning after I get way too loud after the Mewtwo kill.
This was the run of a life. Only reset a few times, and didn't get THAT lucky throughout the run. Great situational awareness to get those quick kills, and used the new strategy of dropping garbage after AI raised their stack on the first half of the run. This resets their stop time and gives them less time for a clear.
Old WR was 17:01, and we skipped over 16:xx entirely. This category is close to dead - though sub 15 is possible with close to zero resets.
Thanks to everyone who was watching! -- Watch live at / taymannd
Explanation for the run:
The way puzzle league works is that you swap blocks around. Swapping three or more of the same color in a row causes them to clear and the blocks above to fall down. If you clear four or more blocks in a row, that's a combo. If you clear blocks and blocks fall down to clear again, that's a chain. Combos and chains send garbage blocks to your opponent. If your screen is filled up entirely with garbage, an invisible timer called stop time counts down. When it hits zero, you die. Stop time is paused when blocks or garbage is cleared, and doing chains increases your stop time above the default.
Now, the AI has a weird quirk in this game. They're programmed to clear the lowest garbage block on their screen. So I start a chain with a four combo, then get another four combo in that chain to send two small garbage blocks below the big chain garbage block. If one of these falls to the bottom, and the AI can't find a clear on it, their cursor will freak out before dying, even if they had clears elsewhere on the board. So while I'm chaining, I'm also watching the AI's screen for an opportunity to drop my garbage. I want the AI to chain a lot to leave an opening for garbage.
Because the AI on the first half of the game has slower cursor speed and doesn't chain as much, I have a backup strategy where I send my garbage as soon as the AI raises their stack. Raising the stack resets the stop time to default, giving them less time to find a clear on the garbage. This doesn't work on latter half AI, since their cursor speed is so good, but they chain a lot more, meaning it's easier to drop garbage to the bottom and get a quick kill that way.
This game has a ton of RNG, as you'd expect, but you can mitigate some of that by chaining a lot and having good timing. Everything came together in this run to wreck the previous WR (17:01), where I got lucky on some stages and made very few mistakes. I did accidentally dropped my chain on Mewtwo, but luckily he left his stack really high on the right, so I could still top him off with garbage.
I feel like if this game deserves way more attention, like the should make it a competitive game or something and re-release it that would be amazing
Pokemon games is about catching pokemon and battling them not some stupid puzzle solving crap
Dark. scenes3578 i'm not even gonna argue with you
Dark. scenes3578 but i could agree that they dont have to remake it with pokemon at least make an tetris attack remake, how could they let a fun game like this just die
I agree, I played this so much as a kid I would see moving blocks in my eyes like screen burn in
@@Darkscenes-jp4ge It's just an improved tetris attack with a pokemon theme. I don't see a problem with it. I also love real pokemon games
I don’t even want to play after watching that. That was crazy. You are insane at this game.
Nutty good run. That was impressive. Beating Pokémon Puzzle League on Super Hard was already the hardest game I've ever beaten. Clearing it in less than 16 minutes is wild. 👏🏻
i was laughing everytime you slammed your keyboard for the next segment, followed by “LETS GO!” lol. congrats on WR!
DUDE. Amazing. Seen this posted on r/speedrun. Used to play this game as a kid, and this totally blew my mind.
GG
This guy looks like a fusion between Bill Murray and Rainn Wilson and gained some weight
Good run Bill Wilson
Insane run dude! Makes me wanna get back into running it myself just for fun (I wasn't very good; I think I managed 35:48 on my best recorded run). Congrats on the record =D
Damn i wasnt even thinking about iT..Should try iT.
Just came over from ProJared's archived footage of this gameplay, and my god, you are a freaking god at this game.
I played something similar to this but forget what it's called and sucked at it. Nice to see someone own this shit.
God this game, this mario kart 64 and sonic riders were the games I played a lot as a kid, took me about 2 years of watching my brother go from easy to super hard for me to get interested and another year to win against mewtwo on super hard for the first time.
I have really fond memories of this game.
I would play it nowadays but I have no idea where my nintendo 64 is.
I literally can't leave this game alone
I would demolish you lol
Nice run. What more can I say
08'57 in-game time awesome WR
Yeah I am remember doing this one and watching the end credit for a secret code and was disappointed that none was there after completing s-hard
This is insane
This is literally the first time I've seen bruno pick primape as his choice it's hilarious to me lol congrats on the world record
The title says “former record”
Has this one been broken?
Does anyone know yet if its possible to play as gary (2). Like nidoqueen arcanine and kingler
There's no way to play as Gary 2 Pokemon, as far as I'm aware.
Finally someone near my lvl. I do wish we could play across the interwebs :D
Are the blocks a kind of tetris attack mod??
Are you on emulator? What controller are you using? I use XBox One controller but the joystick sensitivity is weird. Any controller recommendations?
Try the d-pad, I find it more accurate
I miss this game
Can you still play?
Imma try this one day
Have you tried it yet?
Dude, we need answers!
speedrunning destroys games
Dude how did you get this good
strats, dude. This run is all about taking advantage of the way the AI works, and cheesing it. If the AI wasn't as exploitable as it is, this game would be beyond rediculously hard. The main difficulty in running this game is being able to do the chains you need to do while also looking at the AI's screen and adjusting acoordingly, which is definitely no joke though.
@@whs1pmjazz Could you explain a little on how he's manipulating the AI? I can see they act weird before they're defeated
@@newphilmz3605 the AI will always go to try and get rid of the garbage block nearest to their regular blocks. So, a puzzle league speedrunner always starts their chains with a 4 in a row combo, which produces the smallest size garbage block, which has the best chance of falling down further and creating some space between that small garbage block, and the rest of the garbage blocks. This separation is very important, and allows a runner to cheese the AI in two ways: first, because the AI will always go to clear that small garbage block first if it has fallen lower than the rest of the garbage stack, they can lose if the rest of the garbage stack has reached the top in the time taken to clear the unimportant little garbage block made from the 4 combo at the beginning of the chain. Second, if they don't have a way to directly clear that tiny garbage block, the AI will panic and their cursor will go up and down, thinking that they have no plays, EVEN if they have a way to clear the much larger garbage stack above, which is the actual way that you lose in this game. 2:39 is an example of the first scenario happening, and 9:13 is a good example of the second scenario happening
I started playing Tetris Attack (which is also a puzzle league game) when I was five. ^_^
@@maxerAA quick check, was my explanation of the mechanics accurate?
How is your bigest combo?
You mean chain
no es tan bueno
this is insane
