    Gigas are some of the most beloved Coasters out there. Whenever someone is asked about a dream coaster at their home park 9/9 times they're gonna say a giga. But sadly, I think the Giga is on its way out, and in this video we dive into why...

      I noticed they have purchased most of their coasters from manufacturers based in EU countries. Rather unfortunately, B&M is based in Switzerland, not Liechtenstein like Intamin. The only big exception to this is Zadra, which was made by RMC, who is based in USA. The only thing I can say to explain it is that the US is a EU ally, but so is Switzerland through many deals, so idk.

    The term “giga” “hyper” “mega” and “strata” has no meaning outside the USA as everywhere else uses the metric system and the height marks for all those categories are quite arbitrary when converted to meters and don’t make sense.

      @finn.linn.1250 Před 3 lety +6

      Exactly, that is why Hyperion is under 300ft or 91 meters. It simply makes no sense and the only possible milestone thet would attract guests would be 100 meters. I also remember seeing in an airtime thrills video that they were almost as profitable as cga so it has a lot of potential. I doubt they have the space though, they're surrounded by other stuff, but they could probably fit one in if they wanted to

    • @cryptic4762
      @cryptic4762 Před 3 lety

      I'd say Hershey Park and Kennywood are more likely before Dorney. The state on PA has a height restriction on all rides with permits needed for anything over 200ft. Both of these parks already got permits. But realistically, Dollywood is the only park left that has potential for a giga. And it's great because the mountainside can help them avoid the height limit. Similar to Wild eage, the hill can be on the mountain and not go too far above the skyline. Similar experience to Phantom's Revenge and Orion. The drop classifies it has hyper/giga respectively

    • @jonathanfrancesco3305
      @jonathanfrancesco3305 Před 3 lety

      I don't think it's the state of PA blocking Dorney but more their local township as they're closeish to an airport. They have limits on how many tall rides they can have. I also do not think Dorney has room for a Giga right now unless they scrap Steel Force down the line. (And honestly, I think they're gonna ride that one until the wheels fall off. lol) Besides, Dorney will take anything they can get right now. lol And I think they're going to get their new wooden and probably another inverty coaster long before a giga is even in the convo.

    CAROWINDS, the park with a mostly mid-tier lineup pre-2010s, got a B&M hyper and giga within 5 years. If Cedar Fair wants to grow a park, you know damn well they're gonna do it. I know Carowinds is in a special position - they've got a multi-metropolitan service region spanning two states with almost zero competition, and Paramount essentially left CF with a blank slate to work with there. • @mattsnyder4754
    @mattsnyder4754 Před 3 lety +1

    There’s only 2 reasons why a park would build a giga.
    Reason 1 is to try and get some attention in the “tallest/fastest” category. That’s a silly choice because A) Stratacoasters are a thing and B) i305 taught us that no matter what you build, it HAS to appeal to the GP.
    Reason 2 is because you need that kind of momentum to pull off later ride elements. This is also, at this point, silly. LIMs and other launches are becoming so cost-effective and reliable that if anyone nowadays needs 90mph of speed, they’re much better off doing it with a launch. They take up less space. They’re infinitely cheaper and easier to construct.
    At the end of the day. If you need to be tall, you probably aren’t building a giga. And if you need to be fast, you’re probably doing it with a launch.

    Not a fanboy, but RMC absolutely changed the industry. After the 90s/00s coaster wars that were all about breaking records, RMC proved that bigger doesn't mean better and other manufacturers started following suit. I don't think there's any going back now. Parks know that they don't have to spend $30 million on a giga to get a crowd favorite that will keep people coming back for more. Breaking records just for the sake of breaking them doesn't bring the return on investment.

    Honestly I’m all for this. Personally, even though I do enjoy traditional gigas they get old really quickly. As someone who would regularly attend Carowinds growing up I remember thinking that fury wasn’t that much different from intimidator (the hyper that they built a few years before) other than being faster and taller (not to mention their cars and restraints are literally identical). I would rather ride a coaster with lots of inversions and other unique elements rather than a traditional giga that has none of that, and a giga with inversions would be the best of both worlds in my opinion.

  • @nathonizamboni875
    @nathonizamboni875 Před 3 lety +4

    TBH I like hypers more than gigas. All of the hyper or near-hyper coasters I have been on deliver a longer ride and it's not like they aren't fast. Plus hypers usually have a few more elements than gigas. Some have way more (Vengeance for example). Also the higher speed of gigas means that the pacing/flow/whatever must be slower, because you can only pull so many gs to get up into the next element.
    Imo there's a goldilocks zone for coasters that feel fast, intense, don't end too early, and have consistent pacing/flow throughout. It's 100 to 250 ft. Ofc there are good coasters outside that but they are much rarer. Lightning Run is about the smallest you can go before you don't have enough speed to get a ride of decant length. While anything over 250ft is really fast but has length or flow issues.
    "Giga coasters are too fast" is probably the hottest roller coaster take I have but I will stand by it.

      No lmao the faster the coaster generally the faster the pacing that's how physics work. For example I-305 has pacing of about 100 ft/sec, while Steel Vengeance has pacing of about 60 ft/sec. Fury 325, a giga coaster more similar to Steel Vengeance, (elements higher off the ground), has pacing of about 90 ft/sec. Even if the elements are more drawn out to compensate for this, the faster coaster still will usually pull more forces.

    • @nathonizamboni875
      @nathonizamboni875 Před 11 měsíci

      @@GooseDuck-ft4ko I don't really care about average speed. When I wrote that comment I was using it to mean the progression of a ride, how fast it covers elements. There isn't really a good term for that. Besides, pacing is hardly a good metric for how fun a ride is. Formula rosa has an average speed of 120 ft/s. Steel Vengeance has an average speed of 78ft/s. But Vengeance has better flow, a better mix of elements. Is Formula Rosa 1.5x better than Steve? Hell no. Smaller, slower coasters can cover more elements more quickly, creating a more thrilling and dynamic ride.

    "Kondaa that's already almost there" it'd need to be almost twice as high to be a giga lol.
    I can't see it happening at a Walibi park to be honest. As you said, Walibi Belgium just got Kondaa. Rhône-Alps seems to be a smaller scale park and not really Compagnie des Alpes' favorite child.
    Walibi Holland's Intamin Megacoaster Goliath does have a Gigacoaster-like layout, so perhaps if it needs replacing a giga would be a fitting upgrade. Though with the height difference between a giga and Goliath, the upgrade might almost be too big, if you get what I mean.
    Maybe in the future, Walibi Belgium could add a giga to be the Milli to Kondaa's Maverick. That'd make the most sense if it were economically viable.
    Maybe Europapark could build one too.
    Btw, I don't know if you're saying "the parent company of the Walibi parks" because the pronunciation of Compagnie des Alpes might be hard. It is pronounced "come-pahng-yee days ahlps" with the "ah" pronounced like you're saying "ahhh"

    I love living in Ohio! On a weekly basis, I can choose which giga coaster I want to ride whether that be Orion or Millennium Force ‼️ I hope for other parks’ sakes that more gigas are added! But it also isn’t the most cost effective option and hypers usually can stun the crowd height wise. Most of my friends who only went to kings island used to be stunned by diamondbacks height. Even I was in shock at Diamondback’s height when I first when there as a 9 year old. So I’m sure the height of a hyper can really shock the average guest at most parks which just gives no reason to build a giga for most parks. Also, like what some other comments said, Europe has no reason to build a giga coaster at least in terms of being marketable. Being 91 meters tall is not nearly as significant and marketable in the metric system as opposed to 300 feet in the US system! I could even see large scale hypers like Shambhala being added at certain places that are up in the high 250+ range and resemble gigas but not have a 300 foot drop just because there really isn’t much incentive to go to 91 meters
