  • Dear Dhama Friends
    The 17th karmapa
Simply through the practice of awareness alone - without having to actually aim for happiness in any way - we are somehow able to experience, and realise in our own way, how we arrived at this thing we call the present. And through this experience, it gives birth to a timeless state: free of the burden of the past, and free of fear and expectations of the future.🙏
One of the most important behaviours of a Bodhisattva is to always be kind, gentle, and be a good example, therefore one of the many things that a Bodhisattva has to be very watchful of is his or her speech.

To the negative comments in here all i want to say is that his holiness is not an ordinary person trying to get enlightened like us but he is already an enlightened being who came to earth to help people, please understand the difference and don't compare him with ordinary people saying how he is married and have kids.

The ancients repeatedly said that enlightenment is a state of mind, not a lifestyle. Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita mentions different paths to enlightenment, one of which is the path of asceticism and hermitage, and the other a life of service and minimalism. Lord Krishna said that the better path is a life of service, living a simple life and being a loving husband and father. Being detached mentally, doesn’t mean detaching yourself physically. It means adopting a mindset of compassion and equanimity that is unphased by the world around it, being able to be happy and compassionate in times of peace and chaos. This state of mind is described as a gemstone, the nature of the gemstone is unchanged regardless of the environment it’s in. As such, enlightenment is unphased whether you are meditating in a Himalayan cave or spending family time with your wife and child.

This is 21st century and most of the people is educated and sceptical. Don't bring any referance from a people who lived million years earlier.
There is Mahaveer, Bhuddha, Jesus, Mohammad, Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
All these great spiritual master goes with time, date and fit well in history.
Now who write Ramayan, Gita and Mahabharat? Lord Krishna!
Please stop refering to fairy tale story. They are good and interesting when you were child. But as you grow and understand the world you realised that these are beyond historical fact. It is good for those who don't question.

Anyone can explain why there are two Karmapa 17 so far..... as I've known, The 17th Karmapa was considered to be 17th Karmapa (born on 26/June/1985 and certified by the holiness in 1992) and imigranted now in India in 2000..... SO, who is this Karmapa (also called Karmapa 17)? As a Buddha monk, he's still now living with his wife and two sons?? Why, what happened ? It is quite constracted with Buddha philosophy.... GIVING UP SEX DESIRE before stepping in the light of Buddha pratice? A big question ???????

There is only 1 Karmapa. From the 1st to the 17th line of rebirths, the tradition of prediction letter to find the Karmapa is unmistakable until challenged by the creator of thaye, sharmapa. Sharmar used thaye to setup their camp of followers and after sharmar untimely death, thaye got married to continue the lie. Such transgressions will only reap more negative karma not only for thaye n his family but also their followers. Hv pity on them.

I’m very confused! Way to Buddhism is to detachment becoz nothing in this life is real, just an illusion, we are using it temporarily. Why would he get attached knowing full well attachment is not the way to Nirvana.

Buddha preached the middle way, he didn’t advocate severe asceticism. Remember, he too had a family. Detachment doesn’t mean abandoning responsibility and becoming a hermit. The Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna mentions different paths to enlightenment, he said the best path is to live a life of service to people and to be minimalistic. He says to be faithful to your family as a loving husband and father.

If anyone is wondering about why there are negative comments here, here is quick summary.
Reason lies in the Individual liberation (pratimoksha) vows, which are of two category:
    1. Lay person vows where celibacy is not mandatory.
    2. Monk/Nun vows where celibacy is mandatory.
A monk who disrobes usually downgrades their vows to that of layperson.
And there are many lamas who marries and disrobes(e.g Trijang Rinpoche, Chogyam Trungpa etc), and adopts a layperson appearance, but they’ll still be called Lama/Rinpoche.(just not a monk)
And lamas from Sakya/Nyingma who keeps the lay person vows, keep long hair and wear partial/fully white robes, to differentiate themselves from monks. This allows them to marry and create a family of their own, while taking spiritual responsibilities.
Karmapa on his announcement of marriage, mentioned that he will stop giving ordinations. This implies that he is no longer a monk, because only a fully ordained monk can give ordination, so it makes sense why he would stop giving ordinations.
The bone of contention for many Tibetan Buddhists is, if Karmapa is now not a monk then why does he continue to show appearance of a monk(fully red robe & shaved head).
Something very unusual to happen in Tibetan Buddhism, as it gives a wrong impression to the Buddhist and non-Buddhist community that monks can marry.
Someone wrote in the comment section that he has tantric vows. But technically, tantric vows are in addition to pratimoksha vows.
So, a monk tantric practitioners keeps monk vows, Bodhisatva vows and tantric vows.
And a lay practitioners keeps Lay person vows, Bodhisatva vows and Tantric vows.

If anyone wants any more clarification, I’d be happy to answer.

Once one has committed acts of transgressions of pratimoksha vows should be returned to ones root guru and start living the life of a lay person. However these modern lamas while wanting to give up the vows don't seem to want to give up the privileges. Sogyal and Trungpa pioneers of this kind of abuse of lamas position. They both lived a life of debouchary and met death as a consequence of the lifestyles. One died as an alcoholic and the other died of heart failure under stress from sexual allegations by his students.

I have replied this person's little knowledge, but they have deleted so I am putting up again...
To this end, on the surface level, your arguments seem true, but on a deep level, you are simply accumulating a negative karma for yourself and for others. Our debate is not about protecting one’s Lama or to win or lose. I try to remain in the truth. I am not sure about your motivation behind criticizing Karmapa. Even if one may have a point to discuss, but still needs to be very careful about one’s approach. Without evaluating your motivation, your approach is certainly wrong because if you are truly concerned about Buddhism, rather approach him directly or to write to his office. Karmapa allows anyone to see him and talk to him. It is not like many other high lamas who are guarded by police and bodyguards. Taking one year to make an appointment to see them. But you stigmatize and slander someone on public sites and try to influence others. All your criticism against His Holiness the Gyalwa Karmapa is about Vinaya and Pratimokcha vow, but you don’t know that yourself is breaking that fundamental vows of that tradition.
According to vinaya, firstly, laities are not allowed to talk about monastic faults.
Secondly, even within monastics, if anything happens concerning moral defects, that should be abided within vinaya ritual (Upostha) in a closed door to prevent and improve it, which none of them you respected. Do you still claim that you are doing the right thing? If so then you are surely brain washed anti Karmapa or Kagyu School in general but not a genuine Buddhist practitioner.
It makes me laughter when say I need protect my guru. FYI, I don’t need to protect my Lama because he knows better than any of us. He is a true Buddhist teacher on in the 21st century who could predict coronavirus in advance whereas most of spitirual leader only give general advice. That much is enough for me to follow him for my countless births.
I must remind you that the great founders of the Tibetan Buddhism prioritized Tantra practice over Sutra. Therefore, your argument falls not against him individually but against the institution of that tradition.
So, I don’t find any feasible solution for our discussion here on the individual level. You can refer me your books and I might have more than you to refer in counterargument. You deploy sutrayana concepts to substantiate your argument against the tanric practitioner, which only causes more confusion than clarification.
If you juxtapose sutra and tantra behavior in public, it would create more contradictions I am afraid it causes more negative karma within the followers.
Here is how there are; the Buddha said that ordained ones should shave their head but the Buddha himself has actually dark blue hair.
He said one should abandon sexual conduct, but the Buddha has consort in the tantra like Kalachakra and Guyasamaj.
In the sutra tradition, madhaka or intoxicated substance is a source of all faults but in Tantra Buddha said in tantra one should consume them.
If you want go back to the history of threefold samaya practice lineage, you should trace it from Padmasamabhava in the eight century CE to Khyentse Chokyi Lodro in the 20th century.
In Vajrayana, it is allowed have consorts for tantric practitioners in particular cases. Giving birth of special child is one of them. I suggest that you read Heyvajratantra, or, at least the Ngari Panchen’s threefold moral practice book so you know well.
Those are the religious perspective from a common ignorant person like me. One never knows the reality of the Karmapa act, wearing Tibetan religious robes, having a wife and giving a boy birth.
Even Buddha himself said in Sattdharmapundarikasutra that “don’t judge others, or one will deteriorate. I and a person like me can only measure the depth of others”. Now it is up to you, do you wanna keep this debate on and on and deteriorate yourself or respect the Buddha’s word focus more on your well-being.
From the societal point of view, Gyalwa Karmapa did not violate any human ethics. All people have the right to do what their country's law allows.
First of all, he never fully ordained so he did not break his vows. Secondly, Tibetan monastic robes or more of cultural significance of religious practitioners than authoritatively defining ordained vow, therefore what he wears is simply the sign of a religious practitioner.
All that I see in him is a brave Bodhisattva. He is being true to himself and to the people he is concerned. He declared everything in public and proceeded the noble act of a king-Boddhisattva. He didn’t deceive his followers, hiding his wife behind and pretending like a monk.
We better not disclose all those shameful acts from the high reigning Buddhist teachers, for which your eyes seemed closed by partiality, in the form ordained but overwhelmed by property and sexual assaulted case. Therefore, I am not interested in continuing this topic but I shall rather strive focus on my practice and aspire for those you are currently suffering from the coronavirus pandemic.
