Why are futuristic movies dystopian? The need for solarpunk

- We've all been there, trying to find a movie "everyone" wants to watch and the genre typically falls to sci-fi/futuristic/action movies but oh my god how grim are they? Is dystopia really our only vision of the future? Because I just get sad watching these movies as there's far too many parallels to our current world without hope - except for the super rich of course, and our "chosen one". Where's the community? Where's the hope? That's where solarpunk can step in

I think people have forgotten that dystopian stories were always meant to be a warning, a catalyst for action; but without a vision for a positive future we are lost for what can be done or if it could even be possible.
The capitalist machinery are happy to perpetuate the idea of an inevitable distopia because it means the status quo will continue to their advantage.
We need these visions of a positive future so we have something to aim for.
The problem ,however, is what one person thinks is positive another might see as a nightmare.
For anyone who hasn't seen Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, it's a great film set in the future of (i think) another planet. The world is mostly covered in a toxic forest protected by giant insects that appeared after the world was basically destroyed from pollution. The whole movie is anti-capitalist and anti-war in my opinion, as the main message of the film is to protect and respect nature. I would definitely say it's hopeful - HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend. 🌱🌱

You know, I was just going to say that. But it's definitely not on another planet. It's Earth after a nuclear war. And the manga version eventually reveals that the war was actually started not by rival nations, but by a group of scientists who did it deliberately because the only alternative was to allow modern society to go on polluting the planet and eventually destroy everything.

The real need is in urban planning reform. There's on place in solarpunk for the sprawling suburbia, where it's impossible to leave your house without a car.

I haven’t read the book, so I can’t be that person, but I’ve read the manga adaption of the book and it’s much better than the movie. (Also the book is called ‘all you need is kill’ if you’re interested.)

I want a movie set in a Utopia thousands of year in the future when our time is as good as forgotten. The conflict of the movie will be that people find something that looks really interesting in the basement rock. Not realising that they just found our radioactive waste :)

Metropolis was a German expressionist movie and is now 96 years old. There were skyscrapers in that based on the Manhattan ones that had just been built and a robot. It became the blueprint for all the sci-fi films and TV shows that followed.
Then, there was Jules Verne and H G Wells as early sci-fi writers
I think you've hit exactly why cyberpunk remains relevant - similar themes have been present in SF for a lot longer than it's been around, and they were prescient back then. They're prescient now, and they will likely continue into the future. Even the ideas of how to propagate solarpunk ethos is still 'figure out how to sell it'. I'm no capitalism evangelist, but it does tap into one of the deepest human motivations: What's in it for me?
The Monk and Robot book series by Becky Chambers is probably the best example of solarpunk out there. I’ve re-read it a few times now just because of how calming it is

I hate how people will misinterpret or miss the point of dystopian films like blade runner 2049, starship, troopers, and V for vendetta. I’ve met several people say these are their favorite films, and they never talk about the political meanings in the film. Missing the point of capitalism, the military, industrial complex, global warming, and fascism leading to a dystopian future. I’ve even heard some people say they wish that was their future, under an authoritarian, dystopian future. I find that there are a lot of Doctor Who episodes that have a positive outlook on the future. For animated movies, not sure if it's been mentioned but Meet The Robinsons is SUCH a sweet and underrated film with an awesome look at the future 🔮✨🌏
Star Trek is sooooo good and one of the few sci fi franchises that is wholesome and hopeful and also sciencey 🥰

This might sound like a weird suggestion but I think the book series young wizards by Diane Duane has a great deal of solar punk energy. It’s not really about the future but it’s got themes of young people taking control of their power and working actively to work harmoniously with their environment in a very holistic way. It’s a beautiful series that I absolutely adored as a kid and I think it may still be ongoing even though it was originally started in the early 80s.
I found it extremely empowering and compassionate and hopeful. I recommend those books to anyone and everyone, I think they have value to people of any age.
I forgot to say this but conservation of energy is a huge part of these books as well. It’s also a great blend of math, science and mathematics.

You know what is needed if we want our future to look more like Solarpunk rather than Dystopia ? Stop watching movies. Stop escapism. Roll up our sleeves, do the real, deep thinking about the world we want. Start collectives. Ditch the harmful stuff. Repair that bike. Never again buy anything by the harmful big companies. And get into politics and fight like our lives depend on it... Wait. They do.

i think there is a lack of solarpunk themed movies because there is no 'shock factor' in them and oh gosh hollywood cant handle that! the movies you suggested I LOVE! i grew up watching ferngully so many times it warped the video and eventually got it on dvd. it makes me cry because its meant to be based in australia, but where is an aussie accent, and the evil blackness and cutting of trees scenes makes me feel like im looking at decapitated bodies.
i think one of the few good things that came from the panini was the growing of cottagecore type living, BUT it came with a load of capitalistic ventures of selling brand new cute clothing and decoration (even amongst all the good second hand shopping ideas).

Fern Gully still gives me nightmares sometimes, well, specifically Hexus lol. I love it though. They really had some good "greenie" movies in the 90's! Yeah I fully agree with you, the commodification of cottagecore became an issue, however I'd still blame capitalism for that, and since the life most people want to lead (you know, one where you're not always worked to the bone and get to enjoy nature sometimes) is unreachable, I understand why people cling to the aesthetics of it instead, as its the closest thing they can get
And at some time people began to see optimistic stories as unrealistic, missing the point of them. Instead we got the Grimdark genre, as if that was more realistic. True, it's closer to the world as it is, but do we really need so many stories in that direction? The lone hero or small group that can change or at least starts the change the world for the better is being eradicated, taking the hope of change for the better with them.
Try to tell people how much better we could live with the technology currently available and many reject the idea outright, because the changes necessary would be too great. Though they mostly deny it with the reasoning that the biggest hurdle is the people themselves, which is true, but in a way, believing that is already part of the problem. To deny that people can change. Even though the fallacy of that argument has been proven again and again. People can change. Sadly they often change for the worse, but that's not the point. The point is people can change.
It's not even discussed if there is the possibility of something that it not capitalism, communism or socialism. Everything is judged by these three systems and they are always seen in the extreme.
What I know is this, we can provide every human being on the planet with enough food and drink, place to live, adequate clothing, good healthcare and education. More to the point, we could provide that with less damage to the environment than we do now. Much less. Even in the now in the industrial nations we could enable people to live better than they do now.
The problem? It's just not profitable.
But we have the means.

I didn't really understand why I've gradually been pulling away from TV and movies and reading so much more, but this video hit the nail on the head. Not a movie or tv show recommendation but the gaming company, Padia gaming, has a lot of solarpunk world building stuff in the works, they have a beautiful solarpunk audio story on their youtube channel and they’re a really wholesome women led and LGBTQ+ friendly community. Swear this isn’t a plug, I’m just a huge fan of what they do 🌸
I like the futurist Kevin Kelly’s concept of “protopia”, which is very solar punk, imo. Kelly poses that protopia is an alternative to utopia, for utopia is impossible because society involves people and we simply screw things up a lot. Protopia is a vision of us constantly moving in the right direction of a solar punk world. Conflicts will occur along the way, and probably always will, but therein lies our path, and it can make for great art about the human condition. ….Just a thought; I enjoyed your video! Thank you. A solarpunk novel I read last year and thoroughly enjoyed is "Future Girl" by Deaf Australian author Asphyxia. I just thought I'd put it out there in case anyone would be interested in reading it, but hasn't heard about it.
And many of the stories I'm writing have very solarpunk settings and themes. It's just going to be a while before any of them get published.

Tomorrowland (2015) is kinda optimistic in its theme, so maybe a rec out there for those who haven't seen it yet. It has George Clooney in it. There's also the animated movie from 2006 called Robots that has a lighthearted theme as the characters find their way through a heavily commodified world.
It would be interesting to see videogames tackle this as well, as it's literally the realm of media where you can act out alternatives in the digital space, of course within sets of predefined parameters, but it harms no one to explore different alternatives in this way. Seeing more Black people SURVIVE the movies, be in some position of power (not for its own sake, but like, leading the vegetation division to feed all the people on the ship or something lol), and games and not be written as mean, bitter, or villanous would be good too. Visions of the future can't just begin and end with plopping people into the plot with no regard for how it'll be read on screen. Also, it would be nice for people to go beyond a critique of capitalism in media to showing various ways to fight back, but that's probably a pipe dream but yeah.
*TL;DR:* Check out the movies I recommended pls, positive media exists in this genre of sci-fi, nuanced representation matters, and we should be doing more than pointing out the misery of the problem at this point, let's actually SHOW how to DO something about it. These issues are very hard and complex, but there are options, not all of which require money, to take to solve them, we just don't like the solutions given. Live life, be free! 😄

If you want a good solar punk book, read the Star Glass series. It shows a dystopian society reforming itself to become solar punk by the end. Great read!
If you like Princess Mononoke, you should absolutely go watch Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. It's a lot older than Princess Mononoke, but it has kind of the same heart, and it's absolutely gorgeous and the story is just so, so beautiful and it absolutely has the kind of solarpunk, hope for the future sort of vibes you're talking about here, even if it doesn't seem like it at first
It's a bit late, but thank you so so so much for the video, as always, it was very entertaining and informative. I am a huge fan of the solarpunk movement because it gives me hope that sometime in the future, me or my kids will be able to life a live outside of the harmful capitalist system, with all of its obvious flaws. However, I must say that I love Avatar, not only because it transports me to a place where nature is the most sacred thing and people are able to physically connect with it but because the cast is wonderfully diverse and respecful of the cultures James Cameron was appreciating (or appropiating, to each their own) in the movie. E.g. Neytiri's actress is Latina, Eytukan's is a Native American (Cherokee), Mo'at's is African American, and Akwey's is from Ghana. Much love!
Another solarpunk video, the more the merrier! A very nice novel I read recently is Another Life by Sarena Ulibarri, it has conflict and is nowhere near utopia but they certainly fight for and have created a better world.

I feel like the show Continuum was optimistic. It was showing that if we make the right changes now we can have a beautiful future. I also really enjoyed the main character's change in perspective as the show progressed.

I was sort of hoping you'd mention 'Silent Running'! Here's a basic synopsis; "In a future where all flora is extinct on Earth, an astronaut is given orders to destroy the last of Earth's botany, kept in a greenhouse aboard a spacecraft." It's a 1972 movie and Laura Dern's dad Bruce played the main character! It's not exactly solar punk, and it is still dystopian in it's own way, but I think it's an honorable mention :p Either way I loved this video! I've also recently decided to go back to college to start working toward a degree in Environmental Engineering and Urban Planning in a attempt to revolutionize this world and bring about a solar punk future. We the people do yearn for it.
As someone trying to write a solarpunk novel. Dystopia is easy. It's baked in easy conflict. Solarpunk is on the face of it so optimistic and hopeful that it can come off as saccharine. I'm trying though darn it. I'm working on the timeline and it does approach dystopia, but the point is that people are trying to fight back. The hardest part is getting the anti-capitalist in there. It's very hard to unintrench myself from something I've been stuck in from birth.
The initial pictures shown when you were describing the aesthetic of solarpunk reminded me of the illustrations from the Dinotopia books :-) 🌱🍀🌸
I love me a good dystopia and Hunger Games(the books) and Mad Max Fury Road are some of my favorites. But I do agree that there could be more variety and Solarpunk sounds really cool. I just think that it`s hard to imagine a future where things turn out anything but absolutely terrible considering how things are going. But still, one can dream right. 🌱
Gosh I wish there was more solarpunk in the world, and love this video! I think a good pre-solarpunk movie is After Yang (2021) with Colin Farrell and Jodie Turner-Smith, which I feel takes place in between now and solarpunk. And its not about about Main Character toppling the system but the small human ways we cope, live, and adjust. It is slower paced than most movies but I would definitely add it to the list. 🌺

I love a bit of brutalist architecture but I like the idea of it being softened in a way too, like my house to be a white box but with a nice green garden, hate the grim dystopian but also think a lot of the solar punk looks too much like a dream of what an inner city hippy thinks living on a farm is like.
I believe that a juxtaposition of a dystopian society to the solar punk utopia is needed for the conflict of the story to be meaningful.
You could of course set romances within a solarpunk world, but outside of that you run into the issue that drama and conflict might seem arbitrary or preachy. The juxtaposition could relieve this issue and convey the message more directly that there are solutions to the problems we are facing. As Cyberpunk is an extrapolation of our current course Solarpunk needs to then be the road map to a better future.

Solar"punk" only works if it's a rebel movement in a dystopia. What you want is "Solartopia", as in a post dystopia, utopia. Can we stop abusing the term punk.

I would like to see more movies about positive representations of aliens and/ or androids. Some sort of first contact with aliens that want to help make our world a better place, with some issues that turn sideways but are resolved through the movie, would be interesting and cool I think.
Isn't it funny how a majority of aliens, or machinery like androids, we automatically think "what if they want to unalive or control us?" - says more about a reflection on us imo that this is the first thing we think of

Maybe one of the last things super intelligent and advanced aliens have left is being kind to other aliens and helping them get more advanced… surely they would have been able to collect resources from other uninhabited planets and asteroids, and would have plenty of machine and robot technology to do much of their dirty work.

I know I'm late to the video but I have a feeling I know exactly why peoples escapism is often horrendous things. And the election in my country this year is really solidifying the opinion I have. People have a morbid curiosity that makes them want to experience hardship. Of course once they're in it they just want out but I think there's a feeling of "what if things were this bad" that kinda makes people desire it. Appeal of the void

Not a movie, but the books by Kit Rocha (both the Beyond series and the Mercenary Librarians series) have distinct solarpunk vibes as described here. They are VERY ADULT in nature, so if spicy books are not your thing then they won't be for you, but they focus a lot on community and sustainable lifestyles in a post-apocalyptic future.
I never see Maddaddam referred to as Solar Punk but the end is soooo hopeful. My favourite books of all time and unlike the Monk and Robot books by Becky Chambers (which are great too, but only novellas, they keep you engaged for ages). Apparently they are under development as a TV series. Fingers crossed!!

Great video! I’m an aspiring indie filmmaker planning to use affordable computer graphics like Unreal Engine to make a cinematic episodic series including a solarpunk future. I’m with you, I think there’s a huge untapped audience for it and nothing that has quite hit the mark yet. You’re right I think it’s too politically risky for a lot of big studios so I think it’s up to us indies. It’s also really hard to make a solarpunk society believable. It’s always easier to explain destruction vs infinite sustainability. But we have to start getting people thinking about these possible solutions. They could become the leaders that pull it off, even if they have to weather the storm of some initial collapses and restructuring. With the help of AI and a smaller society it may become possible to become sustainable.
Ironically though I feel like the only real way to get to a realistic sustainable solarpunk future, we will need to adopt a lot of high tech that wont be sustainable at first. The need for growth needs to end, but with no growth there’s no economy, so capitalism needs to end, so jobs need to end, but people still need basic products and services so we will need AI robots to do the work to create the essential products and services. If we can get that system of automation and food production and delivery to net zero, as well as automated, cheap housing creation via AI robots recycling the materials of the current housing footprint and making a bunch of tiny homes on wheels, then we may have a chance at resilience where people have what they need for cheap. Everyone should move away from relying on the grid, and also to be mobile in case of natural disasters. Solar powered electric box truck conversions would be another good resilient housing option. We will also need to heavily tax the rich, but if there will eventually be no more economy we must go beyond taxing. They must become massive philanthropists to redistribute the wealth so people will be able to survive the collapse of capitalism. It’s like we need to transfer the material wealth rather than just the digits and become some kind of democratic socialist society with the basic needs like healthcare, education, and housing free or cheap, and a universal basic income with a highly regulated market of only sustainable products that go beyond just the necessary. Is that too much to ask within the next few decades?? lol. Hence all of the dystopian future movies. But let’s try anyway. 🍀

Ameteur write here… I’ve been writing and worldbuilding a book since i was 12 and still today. It’s got heavy solarpunk theming and tribal culture involved, i hope to get it animated as a short for my college project ^^
I think it makes sense this is the case for movies. Usually “future” incurs in high costs for a production, and if the “system” or technology itself is not the source for conflict in the story, then you can forgo of the “future” part of your script and make the story current (and cheaper). Maybe it’s easier in animation. I think there are some anime shows that portray the future in a more optimistic light.
Since I watched" doctor strange multiverse of madness " I can not forget this scene :where he and América are looking their memories.I liked alot the movie(cause the horror vibes) , but that specific universe is really stuck on my mind and I just simply need more places like that in movies

I think the reason there are no solarpunk movies is because solarpunk is inherently anticapitalist, and the investor class would NEVER greenlight a movie that shows people how much better life could be without them.

Regarding Wall-E and that Solar Punk Credits scene. Almost pure optimism and human/robot beautiful society built around the reconstruction of Earth.
Ambition: The film, produced by European Space Agency (ESA). Is a very short film in a nanotech suffused future. There's also an even rare epilogue short film for it.
The Culture Something Real - short film set amongst in Ian M. Bank's Culture universe. Not Solarpunk, with all its mega tech, but it is aggressively post Capitalist and appealing.
The Martian - Old school astronaut vibe along with the collective effort to rescue others - as with Apollo 13
Dear Alice - Often cited as a prime example of Solarpunk. Yes it is an advertisement, but you can find a version where product placement has been edited out.
Elysium - A film I regard as a fable that contrasts the grim before giving us that glimpse of a better future. It showcases how powerful a contrast a well aligned A.I. could be for society.
2010: The Year We Make Contact - The lesser known non Kubrick produced sequel to the classic 2001: A Space odyssey. Has a Cold War vibe, but with Something Wonderful thrown in.
Science & Futurism with Isaac Arthur - A channel that includes many videos on various sorts of future development. I'd be surprised if one couldn't find a topic there to love.
Wanderers - a short film by Erik Wernquist - Voiceover by Carl Sagan, which details a very optimistic portrayal of exploration and even play out in the greater Solar System.

🍒Avoid The Expanse if you want uplifting because a lot of that is actually darker than people realise. I haven't seen all the seasons but the main three is pretty darker when you look at it context. It is a good series though. I havent watched four yet nor have I found five, six or seven is it the end one? I think the main reason Solarpunk isnt that popular because the writers themselves have lost hope, what with the strikes and being underpaid, its not a good environment for a hopeful mindset so they wont be able to write coherent stories that could be turned into this kind of movie.
Agree withExpanse not being solarpunk it is more like a hard scifi with a bit of fantasy. If yu want to atch the rest of the series I can give you the website which is Movies2watch
U can try watching and reading Soviet sci-do films where they have some films where the future is actually bright. I also think there are not many solar-punk films as there will be no conflict and viewers won’t like a film of it doesn’t have conflicts in it
I don't know if this counts as solarpunk, but I recommend the anime "Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet".
It's pretty short, but it really shows humanitys drive for surving and thriving despite suffering. It's about showing kindness and love others instead of being cold and favoring heartless efficiency.
And then later someone is going ahead and write a story about a dystopian solar punk story.
I love the idea of solar-punk, just people have fun writing about dystopian worlds

But I'd also highly recommend Sally Pointer. She does such interesting things with long lost crafts. And she's a stinging nettle fan like myself.
The punk part also refers to not accepting the status quo and actually doing something against it

A PSLAM FOR THE WILD-BUILT and A PRAYER FOR THE CROWN-SHY. These are brief novels, but introduce a remarkable world! Also, my own latest novel, CLOUDWHALE, presents an engineered society of the future, not a perfect Utopia, but a world that in many ways works better than ours. I bring it up often, avoided rona as much as I could for my own health issues and got it from a wedding where everyone was meant to test beforehand, my life has been totally changed by it since, so yeah it's very much an issue near and dear to my heart. I mask everywhere - the wedding was the one exception :(

Tomorrowland is an interesting example of this. The visions of the city are so wonderful and inspiring. But the reveal is that that optimistic vision has been tainted by the constant repetition of future dystopia. The moral of the film is literally that we need optimistic visions of the future to inspire us to work towards, and that the constant repetition of cautionary tales make people feel helpless

Solarpunk can be pretty cool when you consider the possibilities! Also even Jupiter Ascending is cringe I absolutely love the concepts and design of it.
Wall-E is 100% a dystopian future lol it just has a happy ending lol Don't get me wrong, I love it, but we literally destroyed the planet and escaped to space to be controlled by AI lol
For me, its growing my own veggies and borrowing from neighbours instead of buying machines youll only use once. Buying second hand clothes and being a good neighbour if someone is in need.
I'm feeling very hopeless with the state of the world, my anxious brain has convinced me we are on the brink of a hot war in central europe and i just want to be on the good side of my neighbours in case shit goes down. But im also in it because i want people to be more connected in general. There is no solarpunk world without community to build it up in the first place
i know it might not be the general opinion on that movie, but to me Sunshine has quite of an hopeful (or at least open) ending !! such an underrated gem

There is a few hopeful futuristic stories, but they are mostly for kids. Kepo, Shera, Into the SpiderVerse, Rise of the TMNT, 3 Below (in a way), Nimona, The Jatsons, Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, Howl's moving castle (in some regard), some of the Transformers. They aren't perfect but they definitely have this vibe of the future being brighter BECAUSE people are forming communities and breaking goverments. I would've put Voltron here but it is kinda bad later sooo....
