I’d add something else: if buying used models, there’s a safe way to remove the paint with water based nail polish remover (NOT alcohol based; that will melt the plastic). After that, you’re free to repaint the models. Ezpz, cheap models for your armies.
Edit: Some comments have pointed out that the problem isn't alcohol but acetone in the solution. ACETONE will melt te plastic, careful!

Dettol. DETTOL MY BROTHERS! If there is one single trick I can spread to everyone out there, it's that Dettol can be used to safely remove paint from plastic and resin miniatures, it's super gentle on the model, just needs about a 15 minute soak and some light brushing with a toothbrush or something followed by a good wash to remove the smell of Dettol.

I'm almost at 100€ spent with some lucky shots(like some broadsides for under 12€ each) and i can easily get to 1300 points. It's a great hobby and although the rules at first seem intimidating i already felt comfortable playing during my second session.
I would recommend Wargames like 40k to anyone keen on strategy games as the nature of tabletop games offers so much choice and place for originality. The social component is also something i really like.

For buying models I highly suggest the "Buy Sell and Swap" Facebook groups. There you can find models in various stages of use for dirt cheap prices because people often have leftovers. You might not find what you need immediately, but there are new posts/listings so if you're patient you can find a really great deal on what you want. I recently got 3 Death Guard HQ's and a squad of Plague Marines for only $15.
"Warhammer Buy Sell and Swap" for the UK
"Warhammer Australia Buy Swap Sell" for Australia
"BUY SELL TRADE Warhammer 40k" and a lot more if you look them up.
Always pay with Paypal though and don't be afraid to ask for more pictures to make sure you're getting what you want.
Also if you ever see these acronyms on a listing and wonder what they mean
NIB - New in Box (Brand new, still in the original box it was sold in)
NOS - New on Sprue (The models are still on the plastic frame but are unpainted, just lacking a box)
OOP - Out of Production (This means the model is from an older set/run and is no longer sold by Games Workshop)
Assembled - The model is built so you don't have to do it. But that also means you don't have the chance to customise/pose it how you want. They're typically a lot cheaper than NIB/NOS tho
Primed - Assembled and just has a coat or two of spray paint.

Everyone says not to use Ceramcoat and Apple Barrel acrylic craft paints on miniatures, but for decades I've been doing exactly that to great success. $1.69 per 2oz bottle goes a LONG way towards saving a ton of money on paints, and they're easy to mix for new shades & highlights, or thin with water for washes. Just make sure to spray on a clear finish coat or glaze once the paint dries to protect your paint job and it'll be fine. There, that's HUNDREDS saved on Citadel paints & inks.

So the only thing I can add to this topic is for the people in the Phoneix, Arizona area. There is a gamestore opening in April that will have a checkout library, where you can checkout units of about 12 different 40k armies and play them in leagues for 1 dollar per unit. So to test different armies and learn the game will only cost 3-5 dollars for a 500 point game with rules included. You can use the checkout in leagues as well so if u only have 1,000 points you could still participate in a 2,000 point tournament. It is going to be like that for 40k and multiple other tabletops.

Another way to save money is to look into what kind of army you want to run. Army's can be horde or elite and horde are typically more expensive. A 5 man Custodian guard squad costs around £35 and gives you roughly 240 points because they're beefy bois. A 30 man Ork squad costs around £60 and gives you roughly 220 points because they're a numbers based force.
As matt said you can also proxy models, so for example two boxes of custodes troops and two jetbike squads will cost you around £140. Run one custodian as a Shield captain and one bike as a shield captain. You now have a battalion of a shield captain, shield captain on bike, three 3 man custodes squads and a 5 man bike squad. That's a 1200 point army for reasonably cheap.
Planning your army ahead on something like battlescribe saves a lot of cash in the long run.
People also make the mistake of thinking an army is cheaper if you get more bang for your buck in terms of models, it's often the other way around. An army is comprised of points so the more points you get for your money is where you save money. Sure buying 5 dudes for £35 instead of 10 dudes for £15 seems less worth it. But if you need five boxes of those £15 guys to match the points of a single £35 box then you aren't actually saving money.

@@angrygnome44 Yeah every person I've gotten into the hobby I recommended to start with a barebones Patrol at like 500 points and then fill out the Patrol to its limit. That way they got to use/try models from the different force org slots and it gives a good base for moving into almost any detachment type, and sets you up for detachment combinations which are so important at higher points values.

Also Rust-oleum 2x primer works really well as well. Get a white and a black and do the black on the whole model and then white pointing from the top. It's called a zenithal highlight and will really add some life into your paint job. Make sure when you're priming you hold it far enough away so that the chems evaporate before it hits the plastic otherwise it will eat your plastic.

My friends and I have been playing 40K for around 6 years in total now I think and I can still remember us sitting together in a circle around one of our computers and watching all these awesome Battlereports, thinking to ourselves "man we will never be able to make Terrain like this or paint our models as good as that."
I think a good tip to people starting out with warhammer and especially painting minis or building terrain is watching a ton of tutorials online. I was amazed at the speed we all got better at painting from literally just watching people showing off painting techniques in videos.
As for Terrain: It's similar to the whole mountain dew can thing. If you and your friends agree to a wooden box being a hill, then heck it's a hill.
There are a lot of cheap ways to get nice terrain: For example MDF Terrain. It's lasercut terrain made of medium-density fibreboard and is cheap as hell compared to all the plastic terrain.
But you don't even have to buy MDF terrain - making Terrain yourself feels rewarding as fuck and is way easier than people think. With just a board of styrofoam you can make amazing stuff like cliffs, rocks, temples and way more. Same with painting minis: watching a lot of cool Terrain tutorials is a big help here.
We got so many nice and easy to do ideas from watching amazing CZcamsrs like TheTerrainTutor and by now we build all of our Terrain by ourselves.
I hope atleast some of this is helpful! Loving the series Matt! Have fun with 40k guys!

My recommendation that Matt touched on is to start with skirmish-level games. I started a Warhammer club at my community college and I got a decent amount of people to start off with Necromunda: Underhive, and we've all had a blast spending no more than $42 on GW plastic (not even including the 15% discount you get a local game store), snagging the occasional rulebook and the various starter sets along the way to add in terrain and other fun stuff. I'd personally recommend doing so with a group of people and starting off a proper Dominion campaign and have it last a number of weeks that you feel like, with the winner at the end getting a pat on the back for their reward. For Necromunda, look into Yaktribe, it's a miracle of a website that requires 0 money and 0 downloading. Also, if sci-fi isn't much of your thing, there's Age of Sigmar that has similar skirmish-level games available (or if you're feeling spicy, you and your friends can aid in resurrecting Mordheim today!).

-There is some package that have rule books inside. So you may not have to buy those books, those package are normally a good chunk but they contain so much that they cost less by fingurine. You need to know the rules but one rulebook for many players when you play among friend is enough+ your army codex.
-Starter set contains two army so if you start one and your friend start the other one, one or more kit where you take your army parts might be a good deal.
-Modification of the figurine is part of the hobby but also a way to lower the cost. Make a figurine that was blow up by a mine and you have some part of figurine to make another one. Some army like orks are known to steal stuff and make it their own so you can have a lot of fun in using low cost figurine that you modify to make them count as the costly one. You will begin to keep cork from wine bottle, small rocks, dry herbs etc to have a lot of stuff to use as base for the figurine. You can save a lot by using your imagination
-Watch for used parts. A lot of people buy stuff that they don't have the time to paint and finally resell them near mint or they have parts left because they chose a configuration.
-magnet are good because you can change the configuration of a figurine when your army change or the rule change
-Table can be a 4/6 sheet that you put over a smaller table or the ground. Stores will provide tables to play there so it might be an option to skip the table
-You manipulate the figurine a lot so use paint made for figurine or that you know is hard or the paint will scratch or peel. Learn to mix color to have less different one in stock. Learn to use wet pallet because acrylic paint dry fast and you will lose less of it. clean you brush well so they last longer.

    1) Battlescribe and Wahapedia can only be used as supplementary data sources, they are not guaranteed to be comprehensive or correct or up to date, so you still need books. Thankfully you can find PDFs or epubs of all the books if you look hard enough. Keep in mind that it's technically illegal though.
    2) The little purple symbol with white cards and dice in the middle of the server list on the left at 3:49 is for the server called "TTS Warhammer 40k" and that's where most of the people that make 40k mods for Tabletop Simulator live.
    3) Let's hope Wahapedia survives after being advertised in this video because it's also technically illegal and GW loves gimping crap due to copyright infringement.

In my town theres no official games workshop employee breathing down our neck, but to keep the players from misquoting the rules we are required for any tournament or special games to have the codex and rules on hand. Here's a cheap pro tip for storing and transporting your new models: go to your local home improvement store and buy three things. Large plastic containers with snap-lock lids, a thin sheet of steel (28 gauge works great), and a roll of magnetic tape. Glue the metal to the bottom of the container, and glue pieces of the magnetic tape to the underside of your models' bases. Now you have dust and waterproof storage, and models won't slide around when you travel!

Fun fact: Citadel black and white primer was the cheapest (non clear) plastic primer that I could find in my country (10 EUR / spray can).
The one thing you really don't want to go super cheap is colours. Don't buy super cheap colors, except you like to put a dozen layers of each color onto your model (yes...even darker colors).

  • @angrygnome44
    @angrygnome44 Před 4 lety

Pro tip: if you are building any of the medium or larger models with multiple load-out options (like a Dreadnaught/Helbrute and up), use magnets! It costs a pinch more, and adds some labour to assembly, but you'll never end up "stuck" with a loadout. You might think a set-up looks rad as hell, but turns out to be crap, or an FAQ comes out and changes how something works. Magnets let you hot swap between loads of different bits lickety-split once you've put in the work to set it up. Also real great for transporting things, since most things you'd magnetize would stick out, so you're less likely to break stuff hauling it around.
You *can* magnetize smaller things like infantry models, but it is generally not worth the effort, outside of something like a single dude like a Captain or Sergeant who can use a bunch of different stuff. If you're doing magnets on infantry, it's not for ease of use, it's because you're swagging on people.

I have a couple questions about future series like this.
    1) Will there be more series like the 40k but for other games?
    2) If so, what games or type of games would you be doing?
    3) This is more of a request, trading card games, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic are the examples I'm thinking of.
(Here's a rant explaining the games and a somewhat good way to get into them) They would only be 1 or maybe 2 of these mini documentaries episodes. It costs less than $100 to get a competitive deck in YGO, but it's also boring and it doesn't feel like it's your deck so it would cost $100-$300 for a competitive one that you personalize, but I would recommend just making a deck that you want even if not good because then it's your deck not someone else's deck that you have a copy of, I would recommend buying packs and a couple starter/structure decks to mix together, or plan it out if you want to, if your really really new and just want to play one or two games, get a starter deck, the cyberse ones are kinda fine but the game is gonna get updated in a couple months changes the rules that they just changed like 2 years ago so keep that in mind, it's gonna get stupidly complicated if you don't think it is already, and Magic has different formats, my favorite being Commander or EDH, Magic you can either use a variety of websites like tapped out to make and price your deck for any or almost all formats, their are also little boxes you can buy for like $40 I think that give you a bunch of land, a little over 1/3 of you deck should be land which you use to play cards, packs and cards that aren't that bad, not broken like making you opponents hand their deck and yeeting their old one, but there's that for getting started and buying the cards individually if you have it planned out already, I still have the first deck I made out of one of those boxes when I first started just upgraded it time and again and it even changed from being a deck with no real format you would play in middle school to it into a commander deck.

The best budget option for Warhammer on a budget is to play kill team or warcry. These are small scale skirmish modes, usually involving teams of 5-10 models. These are really fun games, with deep rules that focus on microing small minis. You can build full teams from a single box. For example, in kill team you can make single box teams for the following factions: space Marines, death watch, grey knights, adeptus costodes, adeptus mechanics, imperial gaurd, chaos space Marines, death gaurd, and more. Plus you only need one base book, and expansions if you love it. Boks has all the rules and base model data sheets. You can easily try out the game for 100 bucks.

As someone who's been into Warhammer 40k budget edition for about 10 years, I have a couple extra pointers.
First, combine start collecting/other starter sets with eBay. Lots of people don't have a friend to split those starter sets with, but only want one team and will sell the other half for dirt cheap. Also, you can find start collecting boxes usually for about 15% off on eBay so you get like 4 units for about 70usd. When 8th edition came out, the Death Guard Bloat Drone box was $50, but I got 2 of them off eBay because they were the Dark Imperium edition for I think $14 a pop. They're completely identical, but I mean they were like 70% off. So check if the units you want are in any Start Collecting boxes or Starter Sets and go from there.
Second, get those cheap brushes from your local art store, but down the line, keep them so when you get nice brushes and want to use some nasty paints, you can fall back on your old sh***y brushes to get the job done without ruining your investment in the nice brushes.
Third, citadel does have some nice paints, but overall I really recommend going with Vallejo and only dipping into citadel when something really catches your eye that Vallejo doesn't have. Like Matt said, the Citadel paint pots are terrible. They have a latch but they also have a little paint scooper thing right next to it, so what will happen a lot of the time is your paint gunks up the latch and then it won't close properly. When it won't close properly the pot isn't airtight and it dries out. AND Vallejo paint pots are 17 ml whereas Citadel paint pots are 12 ml. AND ON TOP OF ALL THAT Vallejo is still cheaper, so by going with Vallejo you're getting more paint, that won't go bad, all for a cheaper price, in a more convenient dropper bottle.
Lastly, this point doesn't decrease your spending at all but kind of your perception of the value of things in 40k and miniature games as a whole. When you get into 40k, lots of people call it a hobby and not a game, and that's because the game is only one facet of the whole thing. There's modelling, painting, and playing that make up the whole 40k hobby. You won't appreciate nice models that are designed to be modeled and painted until you try to model and paint a bad one. But most people into 40k get a box and think, "Cool, now I get to make this, now I get to paint this, and now I get to play with this." Whereas a lot of people that are steered away from 40k get a box and think, "Ugh, now I have to make this, have to paint this, and only then do I finally get to play with it." To which I would comment, maybe 40k isn't for you then, just because you could get into MUCH cheaper hobbies with dinky miniatures that you don't have to paint and enjoy that game instead.

You covered all the major things. one thing to add though would be making your own recasts. Blue stuff, green stuff and milliput can turn one box of models into 10 with some time and skill. Even on a smaller scale say you bought 5 sniper scouts but then you find the box only has 4 snipers and 1 heavy weapon make a cast on a sniper rifle and you save yourself having to buy another box or buying another 1 model from a bits site or ebay.

Get 4 custodes guard boxes. Costs 60 each but you can get them discounted most places for 50 so 200 in total. Altogether comes with 20 dudes. Make 2 your captains. Left with 18. Then make 3x3 dudes for your troop slots. That’s 1 battalion detachment. Now you have 9 left. Now make 2 more captains and 3 vexilla dudes as your vanguard detachment. 2 left can be made into anything extra. That’s roughly 1200 points right give or take right there. Spend 50 dollars on a venerable land raider worth about 400 points. Up to 1600 points. Get 2 and you’re at around 2000 points. 300 dollars can get you extremely close to 2000 points if you play the right army.

I found that the big battleforce boxes really give great value, like 150% value in some boxes . If mixed with a normal starter box and 1-2 units you can get a decent 1000 points army for under 200£.
Could also with some armies make a an okay 2000 points army with 2 battleforce boxes, 2 stater boxes and 3 unites for around 400£.
The biggest problem with battleforce boxes is that they are only out for a limited time.

a great money saver : let's say you got a tactical squad and you need a lascanon for it, you dont need to buy the devastator box (or any options for any unit that is'nt available in the box), just roam the internet for "bits" or "bitz" store and tada, you can buy just that piece of plastic you need, not an entire box. keep in mind the most popular pieces sells fast, but look everywhere and eventually you'll grab what you wanted.

Definitely good you made this video. As a 40k vet I would say it's a good idea to network with the established 40k groups and channels out there too. Tons of great people and info.

Just a quick note . All of us don't play a bunch of at all . We just collect and paint the mini's . Meaning some don't have to buy many units to start, just whatever you wana start building and painting.

Some gamestores, at least the two where I live, have a marketplace for used models as well. Helped me when I started 40k

With the ebay painted models you can repaint them by using a little tub of simple green. Toss them in the tub, leave them for a day, brush off all the paint

I got to your channel because of your Warhammer video. I recently started mini painting and I've always wanted to play Warhammer, so I'm glad for your videos and I can't wait for the next!

So this isn't about saving money. But for priming. Don't do it if it's humid out. You'll notice that your model will feel dusty or flakey. Take it slow, and do layers. When you paint in general you should be doing several layers of the paint once you thin it out with your wet pallet. It really makes the colors pop.

Print images of the units, glue them to a solid cardboard, cut them , and use a cardboard cross base to keep them vertical

Here's my tip for doing 40K on the cheap.
    Bitz.
You always get extra weapons, arms, etc in Citadel kits, and there is a trade in these that you can use to give you more models at a cost of little to nothing.
You can offer to swap your Bitz with another gamer as you may have something they need while they have something you need. I've gotten parts I've wanted by doing so.
Also take a trip to your local Independent store and see if they have a Bitz box, you might not find exactly what you're after, yet you may find a perfect Counts-as. Usually it's cheap to buy from an Independent store, with Bitz costing pennies each.
Online there are Bitz sites that buy kits just to break down and sell pieces of, handy for kits parts that are normally hard to come by.
These sites do charge more for these bits than if you broke down the kit yourself, yet it's usually far cheaper than buying an entire kit for just a couple of pieces.
I built a 200pt Dark Eldar army as part of A Tale Of Many Gamers event by getting a load of extras from my local independent's Bitz boxes and from Bitz sites, and did it far cheaper than if I'd just bought from GW.
Though I did do a lot of Kitbashing.

Honestly the start collecting sets are perfect. They have quite a good few models in and a good amount of points. Choose which one you like the most and spend £50 on it.
