Re:Wild released their list of the 25 Most Wanted Lost Species in 2017, and since then, global conservation efforts have searched high and low for these missing species. Many remain lost, but some have been found.
In this video, we're looking at all 25 of the lost species on the list. When did they go missing and why? And what's being done to find them again?

For those who don’t know, the golden mole was rediscovered November 30th. So this was the very, very, *very* last moment. Which is amazing! It’s still critically endangered, but it’s still around!

Slight correction: The picture shown at 33:50 is not of Atelopus Sorianoi but Atelopus Onorei from Ecuador that is sadly also missing and feared extinct.

This video is a perfect example of something I could listen to while working on a big project. His voice is so calm, and the video is very educating. The video is also 45 minutes long and is something I can watch without looking at the screen which is a very important factor.
With no sightings of the Formosan clouded leopard since 1983, it was declared extinct 2013. Until it was rediscovered February of 2019, when it was spotted for the first time in 40 years

Living in Hawaii, it's crazy how many of the remaining native animals & plants are/were lost, only to be miraculously found in random areas.

That man who made the false claim of rediscovering the list species of turtle.....I seen him being interviewed on Joe Rogan and immediately didn't like him. Something about him really annoyed me. Now my inner cringe has been justified.
I remember his first appearance made him endearing and his enthusiasm was infectious. That all changed QUICKLY.

At 21:00 minutes when he talks about the host that thinks he discovered all these lost species but is usually wrong, the first name that came to my head was Forrest Galante. I looked it up and sure enough… 😂
I didn't realize that he was a fraud until watching this video. He seems to have quite a following online. I'm very sorry to hear that. He would fake something like that, It's a shame the scientific community hasn't been more vocal about exposing his exploits
@@henrystokes1987 You need a public platform to effectively spread information and unlike Galante, the scientific community doesn't have a high-rating Animal Planet TV show. Sadly, it takes a hell of a lot more work to refute a bullshit claim than it takes to simply make the bullshit claim in the first place
Really disappointed in the behavior of Forrest, tbh.
I used to watch Extinct or Alive a lot and it’s part of what got me interested in the show in the first place.
I always felt iffy about how he handled his episode on the Zanzibar leopard.
His portrayal of the natives is really judgmental and while what they historically did to the species is wrong they are entitled to their beliefs.
If he’s so confident that he may have found a Zanzibar leopard then why tell people about it?
If the natives are as superstitious as he portrays them then wouldn’t it just put the leopards in more danger?
And to take credit for someone else’s discovery is just plain wrong and super entitled. Smh.
Ps: I meant the show got me interested in possibly extinct animals, and to an extent these kinds of videos as well.

I still think he's cool and I think a lot of the scientific community that don't like him are just jealous and will do and say anything to tear someone down that brings a different way of getting the public interested in helping endangered animals.

Worst is that it's not even the only time he's done this. He also tried to steal credit for "rediscovering" the Rio Apaporis caiman despite the fact that it was already known not to be extinct and Sergio Balaguera-Reina had published a population survey on living Rio Apaporis caimans in 2019, before Galante even began filming in Colombia. This is a systematic thing for Galante and he deserves to be shat on for it

It’s pretty hard to ID them from pictures to be fair, since there’s so many similar looking black tipped sharks haha, but you never know, hopefully one will be caught and analyzed soon

I saw a heartbreaking picture this week of 3 dead pink river dolphins on a mudflat formerly Amazon river branch. Worst draught in 120 years and degraded forest after the fires, i fear the next list of presumed extinct may rapidly expand as we speak 😢

Forrest Gallante apparently retracted taking credit for the tortoise discovery and credited to the proper party, though he evidently was part of the expedition that rediscovered it

You missed mentioning the Rancho Grande harlequin toad (Atelopus cruciger), located in Henry Pittier Nat Park and declared extinct in 1986 and rediscovered in 2008, which is still in critical danger of extinction due to the restricted distribution of the few remaining populations.
If it was rediscoveed in 2008, it can't be on a Lost Species list 10 years later

I think it is sad that some of these species are caught and collected (killed) for science. I think it is best some of these populations are simply left alone. I find it counter productive

I would argue species that have only been seen once are not lost, quite the opposite, they have been found. Whether it was the last one of their kind that was found remains to be seen, but seems extremely unlikely.

How fo they know they have an adult specimen if they only have a one or 2 specimens?
A Canadian conservation group just bought most of the trophy animal licenses available to protect the area. That is action, there is a Re wild association with kicking people out of rural areas and to stop sustenance hunting. As long as there are homeless and low income areas hunting is a cruel fact not many humans will let their kids starve and neither would a lion.

Forrest has done this sort of thing multiple times. He took credit for the langurs, and caiman he “rediscoved” when they already had been found prior to his expedition
He's involved in a lot of scandals with scientists. He makes outrageous claims for the sake of improving ratings and gaining clout.

I've read that the Maori of New Zealand introduced the Polynesian Rat. These rats decimated the small animal species of New Zealand. The bats would have been under great pressure to survive. With the introduction of European rats, yikes!

There is still a pair of I rebuild woodpeckers here in Northern Florida I will not reveal their location for their protection believe it or not it's true but have faith it is and maybe you'll see their young soon I will stay anonymous as a bird watcher I wouldn't even let the watchers that were with me which were amateurs anyways know that I spotted these birds they need to stay protected and anybody that spots them needs to keep it to if they care at all for the species 🧐👀👀👀👀👁️ I am watching you watching me when all along I was watching you 👾👽😎
Many species are lost due to isolation from the outside world like extinct animals with ranges in Myanmar, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Iran
Honestly, screw "Extinct or Alive", sure they did some minor good on educating the public on endanged species but the host is a menace to science and other cultures.

If scientists today 2024 can take genetic material in soil samples of animals poo from 50,000 years ago and detect which species are still were there in that environment genetically why can't we do the same here for modern day species soil collection we have a DNA markers genome sequence for this species from the one that it was obtained back in 1928 still around they can still take samples from it if they could get the people out into these areas I know it's going to be difficult but ask the native people to take you into these areas and get soil samples you might be able to get detections on these species being still alive today At least you'd be all at the worst figure out where the range is And that way you could narrow down your searches to where you want to check for this species in the wild today. why can't that be done? hell the process of detecting species through dna from fecal material that was put down a 100 to two hundred and a half million years ago. literally two and a half million years ago They discovered dna in soil samples that have been frozen in glaciers or under glaciers when you do extend that and see if it works in other areas of the world.
The cloud rat of the Philippines is not lost
There are several different species of cloud rat. This video was talking about a specific species (Crateromys paulus) that is lost. Wikipedia article list 21 species, 3 of which are marked as extinct.
Seems like there is a bunch of pompous people and debate about this and that.
Some species are meant to be lost i always think about the species that went extinct before man would we have tried to save them even if they were doomed to extinction

Calling Forrest Gallante an unserious scientist is a real sign that, no matter how well produced this video is, I cant take scientists seriously anymore. They don’t like him on a personal basis, because he doesn’t fall in line with what they want him to do.

Yeah because being an asshole with no respect for wildlife is the behaviour of a serious scientist
No-one has a personal dislike for him. There are very real and serious issues with what he represents. By sensationalising innaccurate and unscientific research, Gallante and other programs and institutions like him confuse the general public as to the real situation in the conservation of these species. This contributes to a misallocation of funding and not taking urgent issues as seriously as they should be if one charismatic Zimbabwean can just go out and find something again.
Also please refrain from not taking "scientists seriously anymore". One disagreement within the field of Conservation Biology which I assume is not a field you are a part of and now you disregard science in general? Scientists include your doctor, the people who pioneer vaccines, the people who designed the very device you used to type and share your comment. Keep the faith in science, not in Gallante.
