Lancaster Four-Barrel Shotgun With Double-Action Trigger

  • Charles Lancaster started his gunmaking business in London in 1826, and it would survive more than one hundred years, being run after Charles’ death by his sons and then by an apprentice who bought out the firm in 1878. The company had an excellent reputation for quality, and did some pioneering work on developing the modern breechloading shotgun, as well as interesting technological developments like Lancaster’s oval-bore rifling. One of their most notable products was a series of 2-barrel and 4-barrel handguns, and they expanded the mechanism from those into a small number of 4-barrel shotguns (and an even smaller number of 4-barrel rifles).
    This particular four-barrel shotgun is in 20 gauge, and exhibits a unique trigger mechanism derived from the pistols. It has two triggers, with the bottom one acting as a cocking lever and the top as a firing trigger. This allows the shooter to either cock the gun and then make a careful shot with the light upper trigger, or to pull all the way through with the upper trigger, much like a double action revolver. The reason for the system was that the firing mechanism had four firing pins but only one striker, which rotated to fire each barrel in sequence. The “cocking” action of the trigger was in fact the process of retracting the striker and rotating it to the next barrel.

      I do believe we will eventually see smoothbore autocannons; Primarily for APFSDS and shaped charges, but it would make canister rounds(like the 120mm XM1028) for them a more attractive option. Or maybe rounds with multiple flechettes, all of them guided to different targets...

    • @JackOSUrulz
      @JackOSUrulz Před 6 lety +6

      I had the Triple Threat, it was fun to shoot. I ended up trading for a Garand. Funny thing, I bought that Triple Threat off GunBroker, and I have never seen another priced for what that one was...it was $950 buy it now. I think that was a mistake, because they are usually about 4-500 more than that. I traded for a pristine Garand though, but wouldn't mind having another Triple Threat, they are pretty cool with the way the stock can be shortened.
      This Lancaster...wow. I don't have the scratch to even compete in that auction. I'm sure it will fetch a hefty bundle.

      @@john-paulsilke893 hmmm.... interesting. I have seen the Charles Daly triple honcho models (pistol grip, but still 18" barrel) of the Chiappa here in the States. I haven't seen a 14" barrel version though. Here, one of the classification criteria is a 26+" overall length w/18+" barrel. There are various ways around that, but they typically involve the price tag getting substantially bigger.
      However, i do recall an interesting auto loader from SRM Arms that had a rotating 4-chamber magazine that stacked 3" shells 4-deep. Every 4 shots you would manually rotate the magazine to the next chamber for a total of 16 shots. Now, i mention this because it came in models with progressively shorter barrels. I think it came in 18, 14, & 10" barrel models that had 16, 12, 8 shot capacity magazines respectively. It was an interesting system. I think i saw the review of it on Hickok45, & it appeared to perform quite admirably. It wasn't pretty though, in my opinion. Kind of that tactical sci-fi movie kind of look that seems to be in fashion these days ;)

      There’s a newer model available up here, I was going to buy it but $2,000 or roughly $1,500 US.
      Model: Triple Threat
      Caliber: 3" 12 GA
      Action: Break Open
      Feeding: Manual
      Barrel: 12.5" Chrome Lined Bore
      Trigger System: Single Mechanical, Firing Sequence (Left, Right, Top)
      Front Sight: Fixed Brass Bead
      Safety: Top Tang Button Safety
      Finish: Matte Blue Barrel and Receiver
      Stock: Checkered Walnut stock
      Weight: 6.5 lbs
      *Includes Break-down soft touch hard case
      This one doesn’t break down into a mares leg because it would be shorter then 26” OL as it’s already 30” OL.

      leighrate nitro proofed Damascus so you don’t have a butt pucker when you shoot modern higher pressure rounds, (well high pressure for a shotgun that is). Looks like a great birding gun, I wonder what chokes it has.

    • @leighrate
      @leighrate Před 6 lety +6

      John-Paul Silke Given the guns age, and bearing in mind that those are wound wire Damascus barrels I would be extremely conservative about what I put through it. Butt Puckering has absolutely nothing to do with it.
      Incidentally guns do go "out of proof" as a consequence of either: Excessive use, modification or simple age. Besides I would want to shoot it, but I wouldn't want to be the one who blew it up.

    • @john-paulsilke893
      @john-paulsilke893 Před 6 lety +5

      We had a single back in the day that was Damascus including strangely parts of the breech face. It failed at the face and vented backwards into the stock and cracked it. (Nothing too bad but........). In any case the softer metal can separate from the harder metal and blamo you done broke the gun, although unlikely anything catastrophic. If I shot it I would load light and only do path walking and birding at a casual pace whilst wearing traditional English hunting gear, (don’t really want any partridge or brush fowel but it would’ve a Hell of a good time).

    It speaks volumes about Ian's likability and information value of his videos.

    That was a fascinating gun, thanks for the review Ian. I was wondering, why did a design like that never make it in the long run? Was it because it was just a little impractical?
    Someday you should make a video on the evolution of the Thompson submachine guns, (I noticed them in the background) similar to what you did with the sturmgewehrs. The tommy gun is one of my favourites so I am a little biased, but I think the video for it would be really cool.

    Absolutely beautiful laminated barrels. Truly superb craftsmanship to hang on your wall. Never shot an old gun with a laminated barrel because it just might ruin the gun when the barrel delaminates. Of course you might be feeling rather blue as well.
