You felt "normal". Maybe others were different but you didn't care. It was peaceful and just "okay". No total crazyness. No worldwide upheaval that seemed to shatter this little place where you were and grew up.

80's AIDS, Protect and Survive, Nuclear War threats at every turn. John Lennon shot dead. Falklands War, Brixton riots, IRA bombings, famine in Africa...80's was hardly 'okay' in my opinion. Great music, lousy world.

The problem of today's music is autotune, all commercial songs are the same, same bit, same pitch, same voices, same instruments, same lyrics ... not art but technology and marketing.
There are still some excellent artists with great music unfortunately not the most played on radio, TV and YT.

I was born in 1995, but I have been a fan of 70s and 80s music for as long as I can remember, it appeals to me more. In a very interesting way, I feel as if I have heard the songs made while I was not in the world before. It makes you feel like you lived those years. The music of those times takes you 100 years ahead of 2023.
This is the myth of of the 1980s, some of it existed, but not the constant fun or coolness. The 80s took from the 50s, and got past the brown, depressing, and odd 70s, but the 80s essence was about the future and about fun. That's why we loved it. Computers were fun and going to help us, now they're an addiction and used to hate on each other, and demand we look at them constantly for info...our work and our lives made us slaves to blah blah blah, and we all hate it. We don't really connect or have fun now, its rush from thing to thing, email to email, new phone to new phone.

I hated it when rap went mainstream in the late 90s and early zeros, the quality dropped tremendously. Let's hope this never happens to synthwave.
I feel like it will go mainstream - for example, The Weeknd's new song which is topping charts right now is quite obviously synthwave.
I listen to a lot of electronic music (jarre, tangerine dream, ymo, tomita) but synthwave is very static. No movement, arpegios always 1/16th sawtooth and drums tied to clock.
