- Please join in on our Rōnin “Combat Pistol” Course hosted by Whistling Pines Gun Club in Colorado Springs, CO. In this video, I talk over the importance of revisiting fundamentals to enhance speed and accuracy. Understand how I gathered data from my time in combat and translated it to develop combat fundamentals during my training. Join me as I discuss the relationship between the size of target, distance, shooters ability and how this affected my processing of information on the battlefield. In this video, I talk over how to properly adapt fundamentals to combat pistol. See how I trained for conflicts and how I’ve prepared and train the mind to process through these complex situations.

More than people will ever appreciate
+1
One Hundred percent agree!
Indeed...wow...

When I seen the new Modern Warfare season 3 pictures I was like.......RONIN IS IN THIS???!!!!! 😱😱😱 Im super stoked, Glad they reached out to you and put you in it. A real operator, and the real deal. Huge respect for you man.
Cameron Martho so fucking sick
Me tooooo😂
I was so excited

@DA1984 cool!!! just saw it!! thxxxx
Halfway through this video I got out of bed, unloaded my 9mm, and started dry-fire exercises in my bedroom at 2:00 in the morning
Tempted to do the same at 1am right now.
Nice!
Haha all the time
I'm practicing my grip
I don't own a gun and I want to go buy a toy gun right now.
Can't wait for the Warzone win with Ronin
I wonder when they will release him as the new operator because I only got Alex from the Battlepass
@@AustriaUndeadSlaya I want to see his execution. Looks like he has two short katanas
@@AeonsOfBlight He will definately have an execution with those, I also wonder what skins he will have
@@AeonsOfBlight tantos
Yessssss..Ronin is actually in a helo over watching the combat until the day he drops in,lol
Congrats on Call of Duty bro!!!
Tu, you’re the best firearms instructor I’ve ever had the privilege to follow! This is priceless training , as anyone who has ever found this stuff before will acknowledge! Firearms training, with someone such as Tu Lam, costs a fortune and he’s given this to us free!!! Valuable info, detail after detail, repetition and discipline make a good gunfighter and Tu is the best of all !!!
Ditto! Thank you Tu for all that you do!
This is the greatest grip explanation video i've ever seen.
Look up Tony Cowden's. The video where he explains twisting outward will blow your mind.
So long
I am a civilian but raised around guns and gun safety my entire life. Thank you so much for what you do. Your tactical techniques are invaluable to me and the protection of my family. God bless you for your service and thank you for making me a better American. May peace be with you.
Sir, at the age of 62 I am still striving to learn and improve and move forward, you Sir are an immense help and a fantastic teacher. I find your videos to be clear concise and to the point. I wish I had had more notice of you coming up to Sig Academy!
As soon as he explained the broken wrist versus the inline wrist completely fix my driving issues
Same
can you put timestamp to what you are talking about, i tihnk i may have THE SAME ISSUE
As a new instructor, myself, I can't tell you how invaluable your channel is. Please keep doing what your doing, Tu. You're awesome!
Anthony Williams yeah
That recoil control though! 👌 💯 👌
I thought I got recommended a COD short and thought that the animations were top tier until I realised this guy is real
That was cool to hear him say he still flinches. A lot of these commandos act like they are perfect machines.
You are an amazing instructor. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world, very informative!
Nick S 🇺🇸🙏🏼
I could watch this guy teach for hours - just a constant stream of truth bombs and been-there-done-that sage wisdom. Love to see masters of their craft at work.
A great teacher. I return to this video from time to time, because as he said, you can only learn different things when you are ready at certain times. The fundamentals he covers can never be practiced enough.
learnt so much in such a relatively short time. Any man with 20 plus years experience that still to this day tapes his fingers as he's running drills that often is in my eyes probably as lethal and effective as a man can be. Clear concise and to the point, demands respect but makes you feel stronger. incredible content, subbed!
One of the best explanations I have ever heard about this very important subject!
I have been shooting since I was 10 (61 now), spent 6 years in NAVSPECWAR, shot competitively in USPSA/IPSC for over 20 years and have been a certified handgun instructor for over 3 decades...I say all of this only so that you understand the level of my appreciation for what and how Ronin presents with his instruction. He presents these concepts that are sound bio mechanically, and he incorporates the physics of the firearm AND realities based on ones individual physiology/psychology. Additionally he speaks to fine tuning skills based on real world feedback. In watching a number of Ronin’s instructional sessions, he doesn’t add “fluff” or some slant on a technique that ads to his self aggrandizement, instead he instructs without any unnecessary tangents that take away from the purpose of the discussion.
There is an old statement out there that many of us have heard repeated hundreds of times in our lives...PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. I am here to tell you that is WRONG! Practicing something wrong doesn’t make you skilled at anything other than being mediocre. PERFECT practice makes perfect! The only way to perfect a technique is to be properly instructed on the hows and whys of the technique so that you truly understand the mechanics and the intended PURPOSE of the technique. This allows you to understand and decipher/trouble shoot the feedback (holes on cardboard, time on shot timer, etc) in order for you to refine your technique to a higher level that is suited to your individual combination of body type, strength, grip angle, recoil characteristics and other variables that YOU as an individual contend with.
In order to best utilize any instruction, you need to practice it until it becomes a subconscious reaction in your mind/body rather than something you must think about with every press of the trigger. How do you do this as an individual at home alone? This is where self discipline and concentration come in. Take 10-20 minutes a day and practice, building on a single fundamental to perfection before moving on to the next concept. Then as you build, you spot check your previous fundamentals to insure that you’ve not slipped into an incorrect or sloppy technique. If you don’t have a skilled, committed partner there to watch you, then take that phone out and video yourself from different angles, focusing in on the areas of your body that incorporate the fundamental that you are working to perfect. Be your own coach and DO NOT ACCEPT ANYTHING LESS THAN PERFECTION. Start a new technique with slow (VERY SLOW) PERFECT movements and then proceed to quarter speed, 1/2 speed, 3/4 speed and full speed, BUT, the moment you go from one speed to the next and you compromise perfection, stop! Now, take a step back, slow down, until your next jump is ALWAYS perfect.
Eventually you will get to a point where your mind and body perform to a level of perfection without thought. If a real world “hiccup” occurs during your movement (rain/blood, mud, cold, sweat, or whatever messes up your draw, grip or whatever) and this unforeseen variable tries to derail your perfection, you will want to practice correcting on the fly and getting back into the fight. In the real world, there are no ‘time outs’ or ‘do overs’. Anticipating for the unexpected or even unimaginable allows your mind to react without becoming flustered or your actions derailed.
There are many ways to introduce hiccups. Putting a dummy round into your mag so that your gun goes click instead of bang when you aren’t expecting it is an excellent training tool (your shooting partner does this for you without you watching for example). This shows you several things for example. If your gun goes click instead of bang and your barrel moves when it does, it shows you that your gun is not stationary at the moment you are pulling the trigger and that will help you control your shot group size. When it goes click, it teaches you to instantly recognize a malfunction or empty magazine and, without thinking, go immediately into analysis and actions to get yourself back into the fight, without instant panic in your mind.
Another idea is for putting a little dirt, mud or wet stuff on your grip while you have your gun holstered for example. When you go to draw, the grip will feel different so you adapt, and correct on the fly. Try smearing some toothpaste on your shooting glasses to simulate obstructed vision from blood in your eyes. There are lots of ways to introduce variables but it ALWAYS goes back to the perfect fundamental skill set that you perform at your peak level and THAT is what Ronin offers in one of the most detailed and intelligent ways that I’ve seen over my 50 years of shooting.
2021 will NOT magically turn into a stellar year for our country or the world. Bad things will still happen, the polarization in our society will still exist and honestly it will probably only continue to get worse. I am an advocate of preparation for any eventuality and part of that is preparing to defend my family, friends, innocents and myself from violence. Learning the fundamentals of the mechanics of shooting is something that I strongly encourage everyone to do and then I pray that none of us are ever faced with a situation where we have to employ these skills to save lives.
Self defense is only one aspect of preparing for life’s potential challenges and I am not proposing that everyone be paranoid or worried about what we as a nation or as individuals may face. Instead, I am saying to look clearly and dispassionately at future possibilities and do your best to think through solutions that will work for you and your loved ones. Our motto many, many, many (lol) years ago in Boy Scouts, was BE PREPARED. If you’ve prepared yourself, do not fear. No matter how bad things may appear, NEVER give in, NEVER give up. The Lord works in ways that we often cannot comprehend at the time, but in retrospect, we see His hand in events. Trust in Him and prepare yourself and things will work out.
I hope and pray that each of you have a happy, safe and blessed 2021. 😉🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Well done Ronin.
Excellent commentary that is well beyond the scope of most written comments within this video feed, that deserves recognition...Thank you for posting your insightful comments from years of experience that exemplifies and supports Ronin’s presentation. Thank you for your service and dedication...
yeah man !
@@KDawgKy thank you… I just saw your comment and appreciate your statement. Be prepared, stay safe and never give up!
@@TheChristonline thanks!
Love the seattle intro! Thanks for your service and all that you’ve sacrificed. Also being a great teacher and passing your knowledge down. Keep it up!
Dude, hell yeah. This channel is a gold mine! Thanks Tu.
I’ve learned so much from you since I started watching your videos, and I considered myself a pretty good shooter. Thank you Tu, keep up the good work hooah.
Glad I caught this before my range time tomorrow. Thanks for the great instruction, revisiting those fundamentals is crucial to proficiency.
Lesson learned:
1) No matter your proficiency.. always give your self time to get back to the basics. These are your pillars and without it you will crumble.
2) invest in you. Before you pick your pistol up. Train your body and mind.
3) relax!! Like any other sport being tense and having your mind race will always decrease your performance. (Get into the flow state)
4) Tu lam is the closest thing to Jedi Master yoda in real life we will ever get. A true warrior in the garden. Much love and respect sir!
The absolute best video of all the masters I've seen on grip fundamentals. This comprehensively meshes the what how and why together into one seamless action.
this is the best advise on handgun fundamentals i've ever seen and i've seen all the shooting videos on youtube. thank you sir Ronin, you've made me a better shooter.
Great video brother! I have been shooting for many years and I was able to learn a lot from your video and how to improve my own fundamentals. You're absolutely correct on getting back to the basic as often as we can and never get so over ourselves that we think there is nothing else we can learn from the basics!
Tu is so humble and nonchalant to be such a seasoned warrior. This is beautiful training
Always appreciate your videos. My shooting has improved this year from May to August to November. I always had a firm grip, high on the beavertail. I look forward to my next Range Day to focus on that motion of twisting the thumb upward. Still managing the fundamentals of marksmanship.
This is the best explanation of modern handgun grip techniques I’ve seen, thank you! I wish they’d taught me this in the 101st in the 80’s and the. lE in the late 80’-90’s.
Been watching Tu for a few months now and everything he has said has helped me. Dry firing and practicing his drills translated great at the range.
The intro was awesome.... the knowledge is truly a blessing
wow, watching this really helped me with my grip. it reminds me of the first time the phrase mind muscle connection made sense to me when exercising, in the same way as analyzing where my energy goes when holding a gun and where guns energy transfers when firing it.
Your video have HELPED me a lot. I've started gripping the gun right and MAN a world of defense it's made . THANK You SIR.
Thanks for the videos Tu, you truly are a legend my friend
You have a very impactful way of teaching. Very grateful to have come across your videos. Thank you, I carefully listen to every word.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us, simply awesome.
I have seen a lot of videos and this is the best video on gun grip. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Greetings from Croatia!
Can’t wait till you make a revisiting fundamentals video on the carbine. Great stuff like always.
Humble and informative as always! Thank you for your wisdom!
Love your teachings and the way you help it make sense
Hope 2020 brings great things for you sir
Never been in the military but have a profound respect for these tools and such. This knowledge is gold! Thank you Tu!
Thank you sir. I watched this before I went to the range and believe it or not, just from what you said at 16:08, I do believe that has fixed my recoil problems. I never thought relaxing would improve my shots. I was driving the gun before.... but now? What a difference just 2 mins of what you said, changed a lot.
I can't express how much just this tidbits video has improved my practical handgun skills. Thank you SO much for posting this.
Wow, so much free contents for those of us who can't attend firearm training classes, much appreciated!!
Definitely subscribed!
New to your channel and I haven’t seen a more intense accurate training like yours brilliant work outstanding Ronin
Thanks for the Christmas present. I will be practicing this at the range.
I've been wathching your videos for awhile now, and I must say, what you teach, and how you teach, has changed my life. From learning hand to hand combat, to shooting. I have become a much better shooter, and much more disciplined in life in general. Thank you.
My God ! This is the best video! Answers a lot of questions shows just what one needs to do !
I learned so much from this 8 min video. I can't wait to go out tomorrow and practice. Thanks Tu
Love the way you break the basics down.
I have the utmost respect for you. . . thank You for your service brother!
I’m a Combative’s Self Defense instructor and have level one pistol training.. i totally 💯 % agree. No matter how far you get you always end up back at essentials! There’s no such thing as advanced technique’s only different situations that make you use strong basics. Everything comes from your foundation!!! Great vid sir!!
My wrist strength improved using the strengthening training you recommended. I don’t remember which video but you were doing push-ups on the back of your hands. I started practicing that daily & I noticed a major difference.
Also reverse curl bar curls helped with strengthening for anyone reading this.
☝️ Yes 👍
By the back, you mean the side opposite the palm facing down? How does that work?
T Mo T watch his video on how to.
@@TeamOT I've done it in my martial arts training too. You're literally doing pushups with your palms facing inwards towards you, the back of your wrists and hands contacting the floor.
@@Breaker197 Any tips on how to progress towards that? Atm, I believe that I'm both not flexible enough and not strong enough to do it. I simply faceplant as soon as I attempt it. I can do all other variations of two handed pushups though.
I feel guilty not having to pay for this QUALITY content 🤯
Haha, bro that smile on your face as your descending down from jumping off the plane! Says to me you love what you do, and as an old wise man once told me,
"Son if you love what you do, you will never work a hard day in your life."
Tu, you are living the dream brother, keep on keeping on.
I practice your drills here in the UK with a banana. It's highly unlikely I'll encounter a situation where I need this, but my god, your knowledge and experience makes me want to learn regardless...
@cag147 I second this. Not only is airsoft a great sport, it's also fun to practice all kinds of drills at home. Probably looks dumb as hell but, eh, good times.
Movie idea:: The Rock and the Rōnin
I’d watch
SepticXable I wish the rock would work with this dude for 3 months and be in John wick 4...
This dude would whip the Rocks ass in less than 30 seconds. Rock is cool but you can see clearly whose on the juice and whose not. Rock is all about entertainment while this man is a straight killer.
The Rocks a sell out tho and a fake badass unlike Ronin
Holy fuck yes
Badass intro....and incredible instruction.
Been shooting for 30 years as an LE and I learned so much.
One of the best explanation of gripping a handgun I have ever heard. Tu you are as my TO liked to say a “Bad Ass”! So glad you are on our side!
Priceless information! Love the videos! Keep up the great work!
Aye ronin just wanted to say I love your story my two brothers are serving one army one is a marine. When we’re together at home we watch your videos. You are an amazing person thank you for your service.
Too many amazing things in this video to be grateful for to name just one!
Best explanation I’ve ever seen on proper grip. Respect to you Sir
Thank you for the great instructional video on pistol fundamentals.
This helped a lot. I'm pretty good with my rifles and carbines but I'm not great with my pistols. I was starting to get frustrated but we all know that doesn't help anything. Thanks Ronin I really appreciate it. Maybe one day I can get a proper lesson from this legend
Great tips! Thanks for what you do. I need all the help I can get. The older I've gotten I have to relearn shooting all over. Now I have found your videos I'll be looking for more. Stay safe out there!
wow, this the type of teaching that makes you wanna be the best student possible! Thank you sir.
Yea great explanation of the body coordination and why, it takes to effectively operate a tool.
Intense as always for which teaches you to Be serious about every time that Weapon comes out to the Ready then to the Squeeze, Firing by Squeezing the Trigger, never Pull the Trigger Squeeze The Trigger. Ronin is the Arguably One of The Best Teacher wether Fighting Skills to Tactics across the Board.
By far the best teaching I have seen thus far on this topic.
Thank you Tu, knowledge is power.
OMG, you are explaining my problem exactly l, and I will follow all these rules at the range. Thanks so much sir🙏🏻
Great info and direction. Thank you sir.
Hyper relevant to me, all I own is pistols. Thank you for the advice and wisdom, I shall enjoy being subbed to your channel
16:40 This is something I have never seen/heard mentioned on a course about pistol grip. You're achieving better point and shoot muzzle direction through leverage in your biomechanics, rather than clenching your grip harder.
I have over the years taken 12 weekend long pistol classes from different providers and never experienced anything like that from an instructor.
Thank you for your strength of Character and Patriotism. This explanation or concept of grip is the epitome of how a true Master would teach his students. Maximum results with minimum effort is what my Grand Master says. This has been very helpful to explain the body mechanics. It is a concrete foundation for me to build from. I can tell when I get it right, just need to practice, thanks.
Thank you for your service and these videos bro
I love all your videos, sir. You are amazing. Thank you so much.
Literally like my 5th time watching this. I understand a little more each time and this basic fundamental video helps me tune my shooting
Am I hearing Jedi mind tricks right now?! You are definitely the man.
I think this is the only video on CZcams so far explain exactly how to hold a gun!.. salute

Great great video brother! I always gain immensely from your teachings.💯🍻🇺🇸⚔🔫

Thank you for sharing this information
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Looking forward to the day I’m able to take in person training from you🤛🏻.
Great information. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
This just retaught me everything about how to grip a gun and I been shooting my service weapon for years
Tu is such a badass. A positive light for lots of young men to follow. His words are just as wise as his shooting abilities. To think what he and his family went through. To be looked up at now by millions. Really shows his character. It also shows the faults of average human character. Never put people down especially the youth. Encourage and guide. Be respectful to one another and as tus mother told him. You always help put those in need. He's an outlier who shines bright. Showing a way to shine for those whose lights may be dimmed down
I respect that he said he still anticipates recoil sometimes, its natural but can overcome with practice. Learned a lot in this one video, time to put in the range time
Tu! Make more videos soon!! I’m loving the training videos. I’ve learned so much through your videos. Thank you for serving and protecting this country! ❤️
Don’t know what it is about this guy but I automatically like him he explains things so well and I’m not very smart
Going deep on basics! Fantastic! Subscribed!
Thank you sir
