My great grandfather was his high school science tutor. He influenced him to pursue science vs literature because his science capabilities were so far beyond his age.

Did not die depressed or guilty about it. Read the book. He was proud of the weapon, though not necessarily proud of how it was used thereafter. The real blow to him was the security trials of the mid 1950’s which revoked his security clearance and politically exiled him from the U.S. Government as one of the primary advisers towards nuclear policy. Other than that, he was a relatively stable man with flaws like anyone else

@@peakkkkk It was either us or them sadly.. A continuing war with Japan would've potentially results in tens if not hundreds of thousands more lives lost both U.S and other countries. Yes, many have argued that Japan was on the brink of surrender but in hindsight it wasn't possible to confirm that. Oppenheimer may not have singlehandedly created the bomb but he was the best man for the job of orchestrating and overseeing the right team who could.
He didn’t die depressed of that? He just died early because he smoked too much and didn’t eat enough.
He got cancer by this lifestyle and died at earlier age than average.
