I have played this game in a variety of settings with a variety of people and the fantasy theme has never put anyone off. I think if you describe it as “you’re going through a dungeon” then of course you’re going to put people off but that has really got very little to do with the game. That’s like describing dixit as “you’re a bunny hopping around a pond”. The dungeon setting is good because it allows different levels of difficulty and gives the game a focal point and and end goal which is missing from a lot of party games. The dungeon is mostly a glorified scoring track.

Just as an aside, the color of the book(s) you use determines whether you get the fantasy words or more common words.
The brownish one can reveal fantasy words while the charcoal-colored one will not.
I really like the game but agree that if the first couple of words the clue-giver says are 'trapwords' then it isn't that much fun for that person.

    Furry mammal? That's not a penguin. 🤣🤣🤣

About to say the same thing, a penguin is neither furry nor a mammal lol

He's thinking about the lumberjack :D

A cooler theme would be more of a spy theme. Imagine an enemy spy trying to inflitrate a base but has to have the right passwords to access each security door.

They should have given the active player maybe three hit points - that could even be levelled up throughout the game.

Very nice game! Thanks Tom. How much time does that sand clock have?

I’ve never heard of Banned Words but I’ve been playing Taboo for at least 2 decades. This game seems like they took Taboo and expanded it and added a theme.
Also in Taboo there were 2 levels of word difficulty that would answer your concern about the wild differences in the words in TrapWords.

Not to mention CGE also brought us Codenames

I was about to post Spell Smashers as the Wordgeon Crawl. But it's already been approved by Tom. Lol If you're looking for a great Tile Placement, Take That!, Dungeon Crawl Party Game I recommend Drakon.

I've had Banned Words for a long time. What's the point of this?

Banned Words sounds like a better game to me. Excellent review!

A gem of a game, in my opinion. Instantly a favorite for my family and probably for my group as well. I haven't played Banned Words, though.

The theme is merely trappings on a party game. I'm still chuckling.

    Trapwords is a good game.

    Penguins are now mammals?

Both "Trapwords" and "Banned Words" copy the idea of the much older (and better) game "Scheibenkleister".

"Why does this party game have a theme?" Yeah, why would you ever want a theme in a game?

I think his point was that it may be harder to get non-gamers to play it with a dungeon theme versus something generic

It seems like he described IN DETAIL why a theme like this doesn't work in a party game. Besides, who would you need a theme in a party game? Would Wits and Wagers work better with a medieval theme? Would Taboo work better with a hospital theme?

    • @dpotter2113
      @dpotter2113 Před 5 lety +7

@@kevinbhieey9188 Ah yes, I see your point. Secret Hitler would work better with no theme. Knit Wit is less fun because of it's knitting theme. Codenames totally failed because of it's spy theme. And let's not forget Tom's favorite: Cash & Guns, which as we all know is a party game with a theme that alienates absolutely no one.
Sarcasm aside, I just think that argument in the review is pointless; they added the theme to appeal to a different audience and give them game some hint of thematic depth. I agree it's not a great or original theme, but saying "why isn't this just a themeless party game?" seems counter to what Tom usually asks for in games.
