Why NASCAR's Brandon Brown Controversy May Get WORSE

  • The “Let’s Go Brandon” meme has swept across the globe in the months following the 2021 Talladega win that Brandon Brown scored in the Xfinity Series. This seemed to peak in NASCAR this past offseason as Brandon, in desperation to sign a sponsor for the 2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series season, partnered with LGBCoin. This is a cryptocurrency that is a “memecoin” based off of the pivotal moment caused a huge controversy that has led to NASCAR banning the sponsor in an effort to distance itself in general from political content. But I think that this could only be the start of the problems for NASCAR. This is why NASCAR’s Brandon Brown controversy may get worse.

    The actual chant had been going on in baseball, hockey, & football stadiums for more the 2 months prior to what happened to Brandon. Every other commentator had just let it go WITHOUT trying to acknowledge it. The interviewer at the race, trying to play it off, & there by cover it up by making it sound like something it wasn't, is what sent this thing to the next level. I am not a fan of politics in sports by those who are making money off it. Like what MLB did with the all star game, NCAA did to NC, kneeling during the national anthem, power fist, etc. those athletes have plenty of PERSONAL time to be political, ask MJ. BUT this was the PAYING PUBLIC. I'm fine with "NO POLITICAL CAMPAIGN " sponsorships. But this is a PRIVATE company, that, whatever the reason for their name, should be allowed to sponsor a car. We are losing sponsors, like M&M/MARS, with very deep pockets & long histories in this sport, so telling companies that WANT to spend money here, when so many teams are on a shoe string budget that they can't get a sponsor is ridiculous. As you pointed out, if you want to dig deep enough, almost EVERY sponsor can be painted as political. This seems to me to be one more example of NASCAR trying to make people that HATE NASCAR happy, so they will be fans, instead of making their ACTUAL PAYING FANS want to continue to pay hard earned money to support the sport they LOVE. It's like when McDonald's, a company that has taken political stands before so under this ruling shouldn't be in NASCAR anymore, changed its menu and certain recipes to "ATTRACT VEGETARIANS ", BECAUSE as we see now, the stores are just packed with new vegetarians & vegans everyday. Oh, wait, that's NOT what happened, their sales went DOWN, and they are still down from where they were be fore they made changes to a HAMBURGER joint to make NON-HAMBUGER eating NON-CUSTOMERS STILL NOT SPEND THEIR MONEY THERE !!!! NASCAR, here's an idea that you should look into. Give your ACTUAL FANS Great racing. Smart, accurate, timely, consistent calls on weather, need I say New Hampshire. GGive us a car that looks like the one on the showroom floor, still can't get that SINGLE lug nut option at the dealership. And make us WANT TO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE SPORT !!!

      @13_13k Před 2 lety +3

      I agree with you. If you read my comment that I just posted, you'll see my take on the subject.
      NASCAR has been dying as a business over the last 20 years losing major sponsors left and right(not politically intended) and it has gotten to the point of teams having to split their season in half with two sponsors sharing the season.
      I don't like politics mixed in with my sports. I stopped watching almost all professional sports completely which is sad because I grew up playing organized sports from age 6 into my 40s and used to enjoy going to games and supporting my favorite home teams.
      NASCAR should try to keep the politics out but fans and non fans alike are still going to associate brands by their owners political stances. It's a tough spot they got themselves in. But beggars can't be choosers and as the saying goes, even bad publicity is good publicity, in a lot of ways. If controversy is going to increase the number of viewers and bring in more revenue, they should sell sponsorship to the CCP and Russia and the Pope. Let's really make this political and maybe eliminate wars by battling on the track hahahaha

      The meme started after Brandon won the Xfinity race. NBC commentator Kelli Stavast was interviewing him at the finish line when fans started screaming "fuck Joe Biden!" Whether it was her idea or a producer in her ear, Stavast said the fans were excited and shouting "Let's go Brandon!" Then it became a meme. NASCAR allowed Bubba Wallace to plaster support for an Anti-American Marxist terrorist organization all over his car a week after the phony noose hoax, so rejecting this sponsor is absolutely despicable.

I am thinking about 5280 feet to be correct (math joke) and take a good look at how we have transformed the USA into Political 100% of the time in the late 1990's on up how we got to where we are at right now with all people calling everything a political movement when some of it is just a movement.
      Yes NASCAR since 2007 or 2008 or over 15 years ago became a slowly dying sport yet merging almost all of the paved track Stock Racing leagues in USA/Canada into the NASCAR Fold with ARCA being the last big one to fail and have to merge. I think most modern stock car racing unless racing actual modified stock cars will continue to lose interest with fans due to how the sport is dying off. Also Unless we can make cars also in these sports that 100% do not run on Gas we are domed too have it fail with those younger generations who think the industry is outdated, not with the times. Now I am not saying 100% EV, but they can and Have in some counties went 100% Ethanol with the cars and engines like a country in South America even having some oil for the engine that is some different synthetics they use already in the USA for some companies other type, Quaker state and Shell come to mind on this. Why not make cars like this sure there is other plants one can make the Ethenol from including bypouducts of beets grown for sugar, unused parts of some fuits that are rarely people allergic to, and so on a lot less is needed to do this then EV manufacturing. In fact the first Ford Cars, the Model T engines and pre 1930 Model A were designed to also run using Ethanol or 100 ABV alcohol if the need should arise and no station was nearby, due to the lack of gas stations in the USA. Some older Cast Iron Engines can use or take Ethanol though other parts will get ruined on the engine like the Steel Pistons or the top headers.

Frankly at the end of the day, NASCAR's largely-conservative fan base and even its more liberal fans have shown that they're not mature nor adult enough to handle any kind of political sponsorship or move they see that goes against their own beliefs. Political sponsorship has been a stain on NASCAR for almost 20 years and should've never been allowed in the sport to begin with.
    As for Brandon Brown, regardless, he is the one getting shafted here at the end of the day and it's completely unfair considering this whole mess wasn't of his doing. However, I can't also help but see the whole LGB meme coin thing as a scam that played Brandon and his team, knowing NASCAR at the end of the day would not approve them sponsoring BMS's 68 car and drawing NASCAR themselves into a trap, and are only getting themselves involved to seek clout, attention, money, and intentionally increase the divisiveness already existing in both NASCAR and the American political climate.

Because politics both relevant (such as the politics of the Governing body, race teams, factory outfits, privateers and other constructors) and irrelevant (Domestic and Foreign Governmental Politics) to motorsport has been a thing since the first-ever motor race. It's something one has to deal with. Plus, the only way anyone can avoid a catch-22 situation is to not play the game in the first place. Obviously, NASCAR played the game numerous times by allowing the U.S. Armed Forces (in addition to the U.S. National Guard) to sponsor various teams and entries during the peak of The War on Terror in the 2000s, as well as allowing other political sponsors to do the same either on the cars or in the case of the N.R.A, an entire race, for multiple years, during the peak of pure Autism that was the whole "Gun Control Vs Open/Concealed Carry" flame war in the early-2010s.
      In addition, there's nothing sillier during a silly season than Sponsorship Drama (Rich Energy, I'm looking right at you!).
