This is the most common-sense daphnia and moina cultivation video I've seen - everyone else seems committed to constant intervention and inputs for something which should really be a very simple process.

ended up with green water by accident when I put a 5gallon bucket outside for my excess java moss. I added tank water everytime I did a water change and now I set up a 14.5g plastic bin!! Waiting a few weeks and then I plan to slowly add daphnia, scuds, and blackworms!!
Already got some bladder snails and ramshorn snails in there!!

Definitely put botabicals in for the scuds! Adding leaves that I boiled for a bit to my scud tank has been a big help for their numbers.
That and having a gravel substrate that these creatures can hide in. They have a difficult time in sand.
This is awesome. I am going to get one of the kits when they're available. I've been thinking about how to grow live food, I've still got scuds from the ones I got from you last year.

Now that I've finished the video, I have a question. I am in Texas, and it gets quite hot, even in the garage, which is the only place indoors that I'd be able to culture them. I understand moina can handle a bit higher temperature. Have you cultured them in warmer water? How did they do? Planning on buying some, along with scuds an microfauna in November when I can spend money again, lol.

I'd be interested in figuring out if you could establish nitrifying bacteria in substrate at the bottom of a bucket to make the colony more sustainable over a longer period of time. If you're already putting air into the system then it wouldn't be a huge task to use that circulate the water over nitrifying media.
If you were so inclined you'd be able to use the waste water from a crashed culture to grow a fast-growing floating plant like duckweed or azolla to then dehydrate, powder, and turn into fish food.

I have a light green water i started and feed w tank water. I mix in a little of the powdered stuff to feed the daphnia tank. I would love that full green you have!
You will get a super dense, dark culture if you use a proper liquid fertilizer designed for growing algae and have a constant light source. I use Reef Revolution which comes in two parts but basically you want a two part F2 fertilizer. It can be pricey but you only need 1mm per litre of culture.
I'm assuming you could also add one of those small aquarium/fountain pumps in the green water for circulation and some surface agitation for aeration

Throughout the video, you make it sound like a culture crash is inevitable, and that they ultimately need to be set up again as new, until that one crashes, and so on. Why won't these last indefinitely? What causes them to ultimately crash (all the time)?

My water comes out of the tap at 6.75 pH and 68 ppms for TDS.

Hey Tony, I’ve got a question regarding scuds.
When I add them to my tank, they seem to all die off within 1-3 days.
The strange thing is, the snails, shrimps, and cyclops seem to be doing just fine. I keep my tank on the cooler side, lots and lots of live plants, and leaf litter. I don’t use any filter or airstone either. My tank looks very healthy so I’m just very confused why something like scuds are having a hard time surviving? Any advice is welcome
So isn’t chlorella powder used to make the green water?
It took me a long time to figure out reliable green water as there is so much rubbish online about using miracle grow etc. I basically culture green water the same way you culture phytoplankton for salt water. I use the same A and B fertilizer as well and it works great. After 3 or 4 days I have a super dark green culture to feed my daphnia.
Hey mate, what liquid fert you use to culture the green water? I make my own liquid ferts by mixing dry ferts for my aquarium plants. Would aquarium NPK liquid ferts work? Is it also works without a starter green water culture?

@@prasadj2k I'm located in Australia so I use F2 Algae Fertiliser A + B by Reef Revolution. You need part A and part B but only need 1ml of each per litre of culture so it lasts a long time. I make my own fertilizer by mixing dry ferts for my aquariums but I haven't tried making my own for green water but now that I'm typing this, I should give it a go. To get a green water culture going I used old tank water from a water change, added three times the fertilizer and kept a light on it 24 hours a day until it turned green. It took almost two weeks to start but once it gets going you are set. There is heaps of information on CZcams about culturing phytoplankton for saltwater and I basically follow the same process but for fresh water cultures.
Thanks for the info mate. I live in Melbourne. I saw Krakking Korals sells those ferts. Also they sell live Phytoplankton but I think it should be salt water. I used garden NPK and Urea and made greenwater but my Daphnia didn't survive in there at all.

I really love this idea, but I'm concerned about contaminating my ornamental aquariums with green water. Has that been a problem in your experience?
I strain my daphnia from the green water and put them in fresh water prior to feeding. This stops the green water entering your main tank.
Have you considered carrying native fairy shrimp? The ones where you buy the eggs are Thailand natives I'd rather buy some ohio native ones
