i am a huge Welsh fan, read everything he has written and this is without doubt the best interview with him i have had the pleasure of watching.
Fuck yeah. HUGE influence in my adult life. Hell, even a short while before "adulthood" too. I dare say one of the best writers.
End of.
Great interview James! Irvine's books have struck a cord with so many. I finished A Dead Mans Trousers with a smile on my face seeing how life had worked out for them. Characters you almost feel like you know on a personal level. Keep up the great work.
What a guy! love his self effacing banter, it's heartwarming, certainly an inspiration in this small struggling nation.
skagboys is incredible ,a total masterpiece, one of the best books ever written, amazing
I agree, don't think I've ever enjoyed a book as much as I did with Skagboys
@@lorcanjackson-mclaughlin8165 i havent read it since when it first came out. Think ill go over it again!
It's my favourite novel of his too, a work of total genius.
Yeah I enjoyed it as well ,the part where spud bags off with the old singer was hilarious
Glue takes some beating.
Irvine Welsh another belter James as the Channel goes from strength to strength and continues to grow, i love Irvine's books and he is a true legend who has done so much for Scotland.
Hi James I would just like to say another outstanding podcast with Irvine Welsh he is never going to be midge ure with the singing failures but you will always be our Irvine Welsh he is also right in saying the city fathers were more concerned about the virus killing the trees and absolutely no interest of the human life’s population that were hit hard dying from hiv aids hepatitis which is a far more serious epidemic than fucking trees dying I would also like to say to Irvine that I am proud of you especially for giving brad a mention I saw you at the funeral that day and when we all started clapping when brads coffin drove along past us at mortonhall crematorium brads brother Shaun shouted on you to go into the main chapel I said to you what a sad loss and you said to me brad was a great friend of yours and he will be sorely missed I couldn’t agree more well done for turning your life around after kicking the heroin addiction I think you are spot on when you said you had to break away from the circle of friends you were hanging about with at that time in hand so you could move on and beat the habit Irvine this is from me to you keep the good work up and don’t ever look back face the front from now on and keep focusing on the future big man from mr Colin Corcoran high street royal mile Edinburgh 👍🏻🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴👍🏻

Class! What a writer. Incredible artist!
Irvine defines an entire generation of the working class in the last few decades, highly intelligent and iconic writing. Wish James hadn't shut him down on filth tho and keep bringing back to trainspotting, he's written a great deal more.

The open university can help people with no qualifications to do a course and earn a degree in 3 years, for anyone looking for change. You study from home.
Scotland I’m in the same boat, the open university seems like a good route to take, good on you and good luck
Derek griffin I think there’s a fee but you only pay it back after earning a certain amount might be free in Scotland if you look on the website it will give you the information.
Ben Nevis It’s a good thing in the long run but prepare to have to pay a shit load by the end. It’s brutal.
Just moved to Scotland got no qualifications might do it
You need GCSE first right?
Worked down Marine Drive in the early 90s. Waiting on the bus at the stop next to the shops in Muirhouse was never dull.

Absolute masterclass in how to be interviewed. What a total fucking legend.
Comparing the array of addictions people escape to, a plague is one of the smartest things I've ever heard.
And clarifying that it's not a market because the audience is technically captive... these scotts i tell ya... some of the finest thinkers
Very good work and knowledge . Cheers

Irving! Your aunt was a great person and said the right things to kids. You "maybe" were the only one that listened. Acid house is one of the funniest things i have ever seen. love fae Eberdeen. x
Let me say. This guy is a completely amazing author. So clever, so trippy, so real and has really kept me entertained. Top man
Cool podcast aswell James, fair play dude

Skag ?
Well James what a treat for tonight's viewing, I just got out of the jubilee in Clydebank today after having a wee Sean corarany (too much sulph, over too many years 😂😂) so gonna enjoy this Welsh is a literary genius
Enjoyed the interview.
My favourite author! This is gonna be interesting, the man's a genius
First book i read was trainspotting and it introduced me to reading tbh as it was so realistic to my environment at the time. Heroin was rife where I was brought up like most of Scotland.
i read it in polmont yoi in 1994,a guy from Glasgow handed it to me and said this books aboot where you fae,as am a Leither. I remember finding it difficult to read at first even though it's written in ma accent but after a few pages i was flying through it. It was the first time i'd read a book written totally in Scottish working class dialect.
@@peterthe3rdbanks287 I'm fae Irvine and struggled with the way the dialogue goes but what a read.
I'm in polmont now just next to the jail now 🤣
@@rickybaillie4222 alright Ricky pal, aye Polmont man spent half ma teenage years in dump.. Had some good laughs though.. Was brilliant reading trainspotting at that point in my sentence as I was in with mostly West Coast boys and was getting overwhelmed with nearly every accent being different from mine and then i got handed trainspotting and it was like a was back home in Leith as long as i was reading the book 😂😂
Met some good boys from Irvine back in the yo's Billy L among others.. Thankfully I wised up after hitting 21 and only got one 6 month sentence at 23 and been out ever since am 46 now.. Live in East London. Still a Leither though. Gb mate x

The Real Special Bean 👍🏼😀
Belter James lad Irvine is a legend 👏👏👏
I think I’ve watched this a few times now. I decided after this to grab one of Irvine’s books.
Irvine’s a legend he’s written some great books. I loved t2 trainspotting
Hi , Great show , As we get older , ppl leave this earth , by whatever means , drugs , drink ,natural causes. Trainspotting was a spot on account of what went down in the 80,s , 90,s .... sad n good times . Memories , of #Happydays., and mad days .
If only life came with a remote control, or rip meant return if possible. Had some great nights out with Irvine n pals . ... pure /sativa/ studio 24, days, party days . 90,s . Sadly we all have to grow up . It can take years lol . Am sure that's when Irvine wrote (90,s) Maribu Nightemares? I think it was called . Good read book with a great ending , Trainspotting will stand the test o time due to it being reality . Waistcoat,s lol . E,s , the memories just listening brilliant Thank you .... Irvine u probs won't remember me , but I know u will remember George. Bradley . Bud . There was so many if us ,. China white caused a lot o deaths when that first hut the streets ... just say no, u can't beat being hi on life . .. Anyone reading my comment? Ppl, about 45/55, old ravers lol... Thankfully we are the lucky ones who have lived to tell the tales . Lost a lot of ppl though , you do have to redirect and learn to unlearn what you've learnt from life. Great interview, I'm enjoying the walk down memory lane . It cost us all , things that were priceless . Friends . Loved ones. I remember my light bulb moment, and it was because I was sick o ppl playing at God with the drugs , that was it for me , 12 years clean October 3rd .
After 23 years . It can be done ...
You just have to apply yourself .
You should be writhing, your good at it . Keep true to U. It's yourself u have to look at in the mirror. R. I. P Brad,.
T2 was brilliant, I was singing 🎶 nae mer kafliks 🎶 fur a week 😂 😂
It’s crazy how well he transposed his personality into mark renton and again how Danny Boyle was able to replicate that into film. Truly remarkable
I liked how Robert Carlyle stole the show from that prick McGregor though.
Love Irvine and great episode
Great interview and Irvine looking well fit!
Doreen Milne glad you enjoyed it Doreen 👍🏼
Cheers fellas. RIP Bradley.oo r oo to be!
Bloody hell, when he talks about playing music- I know how how he feels! And the segway into writing... fuck i love the bastard lol
INice one JE never knew he'd been on yer podcast Irvine's "books are great especailly Glue and Maribou Stalk Nightmate seriously good reads. Still the best podcasts on the internet.
I like the positive message in this.
Great podcast James , what a nice guy , 👍🎀
My favourite author. His writing is genius and an absolute inspiration. I like everything he's ever written but Trainspotting, Glue and Skagboys is his finest work.
Ever tried Maribou Stork Nightmares?
@@user-keepitreal420 Yes I've read them all
Dostoevsky, Poe and Welsh. My three favourite authors. Another amazing interview big man. My ears really pricked up around the 41 minute mark when he is talking about now it's the middle class that are losing the jobs. I suppose it's no wonder he is bang on. Humanity is going to have to redefine itself. Most people identity with what they do for a living. When full automation kicks in (the robots taking all the jobs) and something like Universal Basic Income comes into play, cash is going to be worthless, ( btw that's a major reason plastic is demonized round the clock, as it will soar as a centrally owned commodity - think 3d printing for example) Further to this the control system ( fuck it- that's what it is) is trying to merge the sexes, merge us with machine (neuro lace technology etc) and merge us with the animal kingdom ( genetic editing/ crispR etc) and connect us to a hive mind artificial general intelligence. I.e the end of humanity as we know it... Hope I've not roasted the ear aff ye too much, but here's my song Transexual Transhuman Chimera which encapsulates what I'm trying to say... Aww the best... Daiz... czcams.com/video/pPpGeQuVnBM/video.html
Dostoevsky? Really? When? Where? How? I d really like to know!! People of a greater patience and better wit than me agree, Doss is overrated? I must wonder though...
The Acid House and both trainspotting are class, ecstasy was underrated too ❤
I really really hope the Blade Artist movie gets made!
Need a book centred around where the legendary juice Terry is now
A Decent Ride is mate if you haven't already read it. Quality
Or the Doyle family.
It is so strange how he mentions being 28, miserable and wanting to break free from constraint. I have felt this way since 28 when my Father passed away. I am writing a novel about estate life and drug abuse. I'm about quarter way through. Of course it is inspired by TS but it's more so the experiences I went through growing up. An uncle with a drug addiction who would grave rob to feed his addictions and friends who would get enjoyment out of abusing animals and people.
I know one day I will be sat across from James and many others because I have a fantastic story to share with everyone. It's just a matter of time.
I cant see it happening for you mate.
Get your story out. Life is too short.
Another belter mate 👌🏻
Brian Boru cheers Brian
One great thought after another. Kafka would have loved Welsh.
James, IMO the people who can clean themselves up at the first try, they never really had an addiction, sound's strange but if you have an addiction, you will go back to it at some point, hence addictION.
That doesn't make sense. It's about hitting rock bottom and getting out of it first time or 100 times. Getting sober anytime is hard
@@rickybaillie4222 a know how hard it is, trust me. It's common sense IMHO, and that is all it is, an opinion. Thanks for the reply tho.
@@Stef-X i respect your opinion it's just different to get sober for each person i think. I relapsed about 50 x no word of a lie to now which has been the best time of my adult life completely drug free for near a year now.
@@rickybaillie4222 fair play to you lad, it's not easy getting clean or sober, and much harder to stay away from it. Aye am sure it's different for everyone, but if you successfully get better the very first time trying, you have to ask yourself "was I really an addict", that's the 64 million dollar question lad. Regardless, you keep up the hard fight.
@@Stef-X cheers mate it gets easier every day it used to rule my life to now i never even think about it as what's the point in getting to 40 alive to just fall back into the madness. It'll always be a part of me i guess but in the past it can stay lol
Excellent...
Thanks 🙏🏻 for the ❣ James... Keep up the good work mate...
My favourite writer by far

Nice one.. let's hope the J'ts get a result against Irvines team today. 😁🖐🏻-☝🏻NLTF
Met Irvine in the black bull bar at the top of Leith, come in with his entourage and Ewan Bremner(when he had long hair). Absolutely off his nut, going round telling everyone in the bar he got married that day, 🤣 real gentleman and even bought me and a friend a beer 🍺. As for Ewan found him to be a bit stuck up that night, grudged meeting people and saying hi for some reason, (couldn't handle Irvine's pace maybe 👃......) 🥴. Overall great guy Irvine was.
I just see Mikey Forrester
"slow release, bring you down gradually. Custom fuckin designed for your needs"
For all the good they woulda done me i should've shoved them up ma arse!
Welsh is always interesting when he's talking about his writing.
Big Irvine Welsh fan.
Great interview. Re Irvine's accent.
Went to Edinburgh in 1980s. Asked the barman where he came from, what was his accent. Said he was from Edinburgh. I was absolutely shocked. Been going to Edinburgh (Murrayfield) to visit relatives since I was 5. Never met a a working class person there.

Brilliant 🙌🏻🏴 - Can’t believe nobody was taking drugs in the 70’s in Muirhouse- wish I was born 10 years earlier! I’m sure even the dugs were on smack in the mid-late 80’s walking around my old hood 🤣❤️
Mans a legend one or our own .👍
Well done pal x

I've read filth when it first came out then bought the audiobook and it's one of my favourite Irvine Welsh's books but the film didn't do it justice for me ,the lead character in the film didn't match up to the Bruce Robertson in the book, great to see him on this channel nice one!
Yeah James McAvoy is too nice
Outstanding interview 🔥
Lloyd Hinshelwood thank you
James English 😢David soul I appreciate you always in Cardiff bay boots always Darren 😢nana Vera x
Great interview James. Irvine's an interesting and intelligent guy. One thing about the early books was because they were written in the vernacular it opened up the whole idea of reading to people who might've thought it wasn't really for them. Reading had always felt like a chore whereas you felt enthusiastic about picking up Irvine's work. Re James McAvoy in Filth I agree it was an awesome performance & great film in general. That and Acid House are my favourites of the film adaptations.
brilliant
Brilliant.......My mate translated Trainspotting into Serbian
