  • I test out the brand new Pierce framing nailer from Harbor Freight. Should compete with the big boys like Hitachi... I guess we'll see.

    I bought one of the 21 degree pierce framing nailers with the mothers day discount. I have one of the old Central Pneumatic blue colored 21 degree nailers. I have ran tens of thousands of nails through the old blue gun. It has fallen off ladders, it has had a very productive life. After what has to be nearing two decades it's only quirk is that it will not fire the last two nails in a strip. I have a lot of little strips with just two nails in them. I save them for hand nailing. I need to mention that most of my framing is out of rough cut oak. Old Blue pops nails right in and just buries the heads so they are level with the surface. Once in a rare while I will have to go back over with a framing hammer and give one or two a couple good whacks. I also should mention that generally you can not hand nail this oak. Old blue also has almost no recoil at all. Press the nose down, pull the trigger and bang. It also had a nice feature that lets you adjust where the air vents so it is not blowing in your face or blowing dirt or sawdust up in your case if you are toe nailing near the ground or floor. Oh, the air hose is easy to connect on it too.
    I had very high hopes for the new naier. I had been using this $80 one forever, I figured an expensive one would be a real treat. Man was I mistaken. The 21 degree pierce nailer IMHO is a piece of junk compared to it's old blue cousines. I have never tried one of the lower priced "red" guns.. Where to start with my dissatisfaction. It is heavy. It feels heavier than the old blue one. Getting the air quick connect on it is a pain as there is not a lot of clarence between the nail magazine and the air inlet. But the real sore spots are the performance. The new expensive gun will knock a nail perhaps half way to 1/3 of the way into a rough cut oak 2x4 where the old one would do them back to back as fast as you could pull the trigger. And I did an apples to apples comparison after my initial bad reaction. I popped a few nails in a piece with old blue, no issues, I would do the same with the new pierce, and none of them would be driven home. And old blue just blasts them in, the Pierce recoils badly. I also did the test with the pierce first just in case the first few took the air in my tank down a bit. Nope. The pierce also has a fixed exhaust which I don't like, and I really do not like the feel of it's trigger. I have only used "single shot" mode.
    If this is the "quality" of the new wave of HF designer tools, they are not going to be around long. At this point in time if you want a nailer I would try one of the red ones, and if that is OK your good to go. If not, get a ridgid. At least you have the life time warranty on it. I would not get another pierce product - ever.

      From what I understand the reason it doesn't fire the last two nails is more of a safety precaution to prevent dry firing. It sucks that you can't use the last two nails by just putting a new stack on top of them.

    The real test will be in a year or two of hard framing use. I've never had trouble with HF tools out of the box. It's 18 months later when they fail in the middle of a job that shows their weak side. Pierce may be at least a bit better. I'll give it a try on their 18 ga nailer.

    I'm curious if the Pierce has better longevity than the regular HF nailers. I need to do quite a bit of trim work in the near future and am in the market for a 15-16g gun. I know you have a framing gun but still, any insight on how it is holding up?

      chuck from okc, 25years of building houses, get the Hitachi, great gun, exhaust port at top for clearing dust, adjustable depth stop, and a polymer mag that won't break, I own four.

    Looks like a reverse engineered nr83. If the parts are interchangeable I am in. Hopefully you can give us an update on it and if if happens to break down (god forbid), try opening it up to check the insides.

      It is the exact same thing with a different paint job. I've confirmed that by seeing every detail on both of them the same day. So it will definitely last as long as the Metabo/Hitachi model. They have since discontinued it, and now have the Paslode Powermaster Pro model that they gave up on and discontinued. So if anyone has any doubt about these guns, they are from the same manufacturers that the big boys use.

    Looks like an exact Hitachi clone like Airlocker, Speedaire, Interchange etc... should be compatible with Hitachi parts.

    • @chuckkillawood8229
      @chuckkillawood8229 Před 5 lety

      yes you can swap out most parts, to fix an Hitachi, but in the end no frame nailer outperforms a Hitachi. I have been framing every day for 25yrs. wkends and holidays excluded. these guns just work and take a ton of abuse by the help that doesn't pay for them.I have 16 hitachi framers, and the first one still works great.
