      The story with Kamila is tragedy. The whole situation's aftermath, however, is the best thing that could have happened to her, so long as she isn't left embittered.
      If the drugging hadn't been detected, she would have had two or three more years of success under this coach and then faded away. Indeed, we are already seeing she is getting far more attention than a gold medalist would .. will it turn out for the best, will she be able to find a path to a sustainable approach, or will this throw her off?
      About her future skating career, it is something that was enabled precisely because of the scandal, or else she would have ended on Tuberidze's scrap list, medal or not. So what needs to happen now if she wants to pursue figure skating moving forward is to find the best coaching setting in the world, whether that be in Russia or US, Australia or Japan. There is a great risk that either the scandal will turn her into a media doll or that she will keep being a sl*ve under the Russian system and Tuberidze.

    Russian here and I want to clarify one thing. Sasha said “I hate it” multiple times ([nenavizhu]) and “I hate this sport”.
    She NEVER said “I hate you”.
    It was heartbreaking.And I don’t think they would let her win. They all “knew it all along”.
    On a side note:
    When I saw Anna’s gala program at EC last month I thought “that program is for a gold medalist, not silver or bronze”.
    Also, I blame Danii G. He should have done his work better and gave Sasha a stronger program. Her FP is empty, I can’t argue with that.

    • @toxic-low-key-ghost7934
      @toxic-low-key-ghost7934 Před 2 lety +350

      Sasha isn’t capable of doing a real program because her whole senior and her late junior career have been focused on jumps. She literally has zero skating skills, they were improving under plushenko but then she threw it all away and came back to eteri to do more jump drills. That’s why they give her such programs because they know she’s not capable of more. Also even if they wanted to, Sasha only wants to jump quads, Danny G and even plushenko in interviews said that all she wants to do in training is to jump and it’s hard to get her to do anything else, so Sasha herself would never agree to a more balanced program. She’s only sabotaging herself at this point

    • @drsalka
      @drsalka Před 2 lety +183

      I felt the same with Anna’s gala at EC, however at the beginning of the season when I was comparing my fave skater Kostornaya’s programs with Trusova’s, it communicated to me clearly, that more thought was put into music selection as well as choreography for Sasha’s SP&FS than Aliona’s, so I don’t entirely agree with you. It’s also obvious to me that Sasha *is not* a performer, she’s a competitive athletic beast (I mean that in the most positive way possible) and she will “eat up” the connective transitions etc as long as she gets the jumps (quads) done. Because she never got the memo skating is not just about who can do the most amount and most difficult jumps. I too would be so frustrated if I were her, but she really needs to do something about the interpretation, projection, musicality part apart from attacking the jumps.
      I am very happy she got onto the podium because as a female quad revolution pioneer, she most definitely deserves/d a medal.

    People who think there’s no way kamila could’ve skated that poorly without it being intentional has no idea what the kind of pressure she was under can do to somebody. I’m shocked that she got out there and managed to land anything, or finish the program. It would be hard for a seasoned adult who had been mentally prepping for a shitstorm to withstand it without breaking, for a 15 year old child, away from her family, favourite to win, hated by the skating community, at her one chance at the olympics, to even get out onto the ice is a miracle. It has been said that skating is 90% mental 10% athletic. I don’t doubt for a second that she truly tried her best to podium.

    • @Dan-uf2vh
      @Dan-uf2vh Před 2 lety +86

      On a first view I thought she collapsed under the pressure, as most did, however the more you look into it you find out the far more plausible scenario is actually this:
      She really was doped on that drug and got detected as a result of bad timing by the entourage who is in charge of drugging her. Very likely all of the athletes had the same treatment but their timing wasn't failed. Confronted with the inevitable retraction of her victories after investigation, I believe she and the team tacitly decided to forfeit her victory at the Olympics rather than compromise to the IOC's no ceremony terms, since there was no purpose to it.
      Eteri feigned disappointment but you can figure out from the behavior and reactions of the other two medalists what is really going on. Kamila's tears at seeing her Olympic dreams shattered were real as she was the one forced to beat in that final nail with her calculated throw. She even managed a perfectly 4th placement, just out of the podium.
      I believe that this disaster regarding her lifetime aspiration for the Olympics will turn out MUCH better for her, if only she can see beyond the idealization into the actual facts: she has gained far more popularity in this way and still has all her skills. If the drugging hadn't been detected, she would have had two or three more years of success under this coach and then faded away. I wouldn't have even heard her name if it wasn't for this unfolding.

Artistry is 1. subjective and 2. not equivalent to soft and elegant movements. Sasha IS artistic, but in a powerful and fiery way. While Sasha was overscored in PCS, Anna's TES were way to close compared with the technical part of Sasha's fs. That being said, I do think that the OGM is in good hands. Trusova may not have gold medals, but champions can be forgotten, legends on the other hand are remembered forever. Also can we make a petition for Sasha to go back to Plushenko (and his badass costumes) and skate a fs with 6 quads to "look what you made me do"??

    I felt SO MUCH for Sasha in that moment - you could literally see all the years of work and hope crashing down around her. I wonder if Kamila had won the gold would Sasha have reacted the way she did? As much as they are friends, Sasha and Anna are also old rivals... perhaps this was just one time too many for Sasha to see Anna with the gold medal on her neck. She finally landed all the quads yet Anna, once again, pulls through with a miracle performance (I believe she hadn't been landing her quads well during practices before the FS) And then Kamila, against all odds, falls down to fourth and Anna gets the gold. In Sasha's mind it must seem like everything always works out for Anna and nothing works out for her. It must ache to know she came so close to gold when Kamila fell, and that once again her old rival (who has already won so much) wins again. Anyone who knows what its like be placed second best to someone for a long time knows exactly what she was feeling. I would have had a mental breakdown too.

They have been put into an impossible situation, where even the most strong willed adults couldn't survive without a massive trauma. And they're teenagers. They're too young to handle pressure like this, especially since their brains are still developing. They need mental health help, they need people to make sure nothing irredeemable happens. Because if they're left alone and let down by the adults in their lives again, something's got to give. And, as unfortunate and terrifying as it is to think about, most often it's the teenager's will to live.

    Thank you for your kind and empathetic analysis. The media has been way too hard on Trusova, when in fact, she’s very traumatized. She’s not just crying about the medal, there’s more there for her to grieve.

  • @elinat2414

    My first reaction to Trusova’s outburst was: ‘Girl is acting like a complete child…but she’s not really a kid anymore, she’s turning 18 in June!’.
    Then I realised that for these girls, their development isnt the same as that of other 18 year olds. They grew up in an insulated environment where anything other than gold was failure. No wonder they are this distressed. I feel so bad for these girls, they must feel like their entire life’s work so far has been a faliure :/

    • @ECDD1111
      @ECDD1111 Před 2 lety +81

      Exactly. My first thoughts were how childlike she behaves and then I realized her mindset is completely different. She was living for this moment and was let down by her own people. I think this outburst was needed for people to see what a toxic environment team Tutberitze is.

    • @itsjustnatalia
      @itsjustnatalia Před 2 lety +102

      Absolutely. And not only that, but (and I say this as someone with a Master's background in adolescent psychology and sociology), at 17 or 18 your brain is FAR from developed. She may almost be legally an adult, but she is far from the end point of psychologically growing-up. This would be an immense amount of pressure and scrutiny for a teenager to handle in the best of cases. Given how brutal their training is, and how seemingly unsupportive the coaching environment, it's no wonder she reacted this way.

    • @t3hwaddledee
      @t3hwaddledee Před rokem +13

      She’s gone through shit that a lot of adults couldn’t even handle gracefully, never mind a child whose mental and emotional growth has been stunted, that’s been abused for some woman’s ego, and whose whole life has been skating…she sees her chance at being a champion fading. She may well be thinking that she has absolutely nothing left, or that all her work has been for nothing. Someone get a time machine and go back and hug and comfort these poor kids, they’re more than a medal.

    • @elinat2414
      @elinat2414 Před rokem

      @@itsjustnatalia I agree. Initial comparisons that came to mind were Medvedeva and the gymnast Jordyn Weiber in 2012. Both were teenagers, both lost out on their dreams. Yes, they cried a little. But there is a difference between wiping away some tears and going into a full blown rage. By 17/18, usually person's sense of emotional regulation is well-developed, and teenagers are very aware of how they are perceived. Ironically, being on camera and watched by millions would increase the extent to which a person regulates their feelings. The pressure holds them back from fully expressing the whole scope of emotion.
      Even if they can't put on a happy face, most people work hard to get a grip on their emotions while they are on camera.
      The reason Trusovas reaction stood out to me was because she lost control completely, which struck me as a reaction of someone much younger. But considering the pressure and the context, I can see how it's justified.

      Same! I never followed figure skating. Ever. But I sat down to check out some Olympics on what I believe was the first night of competition, and the very first skater I saw was Valieva. I was wowed by the fact that she was 15 and considered the best in the world. I watched Kamila perform again in her 2nd performance (along with others), and then the next day is when the bombshell was dropped about the Valieva doping scandal.
      I then followed the story extremely closely, with it all culminating in what we saw here in this video.
      Amazingly, despite how dark this entire competition was - it somehow hooked me in as a fan. I'll be following some of these skaters and their careers going forward. Of course I have particular interest in how this Russian trio does going forward. Can Kamila somehow recover from this? Or will she never be the same? Can Trusova find redemption from just barely missing out on an Olympic gold? And Anna won me over as a fan - her interviews in English are gold. She's such a sweet kid.
      Now I want to watch the worlds competition in March. Before these Olympics I would have had zero interest in that.

    1. Kamila threw it herself, she just wanted to stop, quit, but her original passion and Eteri's pressure was tearing her up, and in the last moment gave up in order to give others to have a chance at the podium (ISU said no medal for everyone if Valieva wins), I mean she did well in the short programme even after all of those pressure, imo she was just thorn and in the end made her choice (her falls were very uncharacteristic)
    2. Trusova was not breaking down 'cause she lost or being childish, she was breaking down 'cause she realised her TEAM wanted her in 2nd or 3rd place, it's like realising her most dreaded nightmare is becoming real

    My heart broke for Sasha - I was rooting for her and I was so proud of her in both of her skates (especially when she stuck her 5 quads) I believe Anna was overscored in the technical elements especially when compared to Sasha!!
    I could’ve cried for her!! They set her choreography and that restricted her ability to get points and they lost her the gold!

    • @lindatannock
      @lindatannock Před 2 lety +10

      She didn't "stick" her 5 quads actually. One was downgraded, and the other got negative GOE's for being underrotated.
      I wish she had though. Too many mistakes to win, sadly.

      Actually, all the Russian girls are overscored. In the case of both of them, Anna in technical points while Sasha's in artistry points. The ones underscored are the Japanese skaters, Kaori and Wakaba. I think all the medalists this time is deserving of their medals. They're all gold for different things. Sasha for history making, Anna for consistency, and Kaori for clean program. It's really true that Sasha could've easily won if she had chosen to do a double axel in the short and didn't mess up. It comes down to Sasha's falls. She decided her medal this time.

      @@samelis6546 I don't know if I fully agree. It seems like the judges would've found an extra point or two for Anya if that was all it took. The judges gave Anya the highest PCS of any skater in every category but Skating Skills (where she was a close 2nd), and arguably Anya being rated 1st in all PCS is nearly just as inflated as Sasha being rated 4th/5th in all PCS. They also did not review practically any of Anya's elements while they reviewed most of Sasha's, even when there were some glaring issues. And for the ones that both she and Sasha landed "cleanly", they gave Anya the higher GOE (even though Sasha generally has stronger jump technique). I think Anya is a beautiful skater, but it does not seem like she did enough at the end of the day to surpass Sasha's history-making skate, especially with how quads have been treated in FS for the past decade or so. But the judges will make their decisions regardless of how others may feel, as they always do
      Edit: I should specify that this is just based on the long program, I haven't been able to dive back into the short and the short scoring in the same depth

    The coaches did tell Trusova not to do the triple axel. Trusova stated in her interview after the short that „the triple axel has never been, is not being and will never be discussed“.“
    And she never said „I hate you“ to Eteri. She did say the rest.

    Kaori was my champion! What an incredible young woman, and such an amazing human.
    Wakaba hugging her just made my day tbh. So many amazing skates further down to celebrate too.
    I was gutted for Loena though. She just looked so nervous, and cautious going into jumps. My heart went out to her. Big fave of mine.

    Just to clarify some things. Trusova was warned about her 3A in SP by coaches, she decided to do it anyway. I am not trying to put away some guilt from couching team but just to be fair. The person who hugged Valieva is teams psychologist. But these girls definitely need a big team of psychologist.

      Kamila was the big favorite. And Sasha knew there was no way she could beat Kamila without the 3A. If she switches to say a 2A and nails it… Kamila still prob wins. It was 3A and 5 quads or bust! Tho I think it might’ve been a little smarter to try a 2A+3T for slightly less base points.

    I hate how the cameras just continued filming when she clearly was not happy and do not want anybody to film her having a mental breakdown. I think her crying and breaking down honestly has a deeper meaning then just not being able to win gold.
