In this second video of a multi-part video series, I want to share a few common phrases you should know when dating a mature Vietnamese woman.
My purpose in these videos is not to make you fluent in Vietnamese. It’s to help familiarize with common phrases so that your lady will see you’re making an honest effort to learn her language and customs, which will endear you to her.
Once again, please welcome back my guest speaker: Alex Nghiem, who is a Vietnamese has been living in the U.S. for 44 years.
If you haven’t seen Part 1 of this series, I recommend you check that out first because there are fundamental concepts that I cover in that about the Vietnamese language.
In this video, I want to share 2 more phrases that are used a lot and also mispronounced a lot.
The first word is “thank you” which is pronounced “Ca’m o*n”. Let me say that again: “Ca’m o*n.”
Two things I want to point out here: Vietnamese, like French, has what is referred to as a hard “C” sound, while English has what’s referred to as a soft “C” sound.
For example, most English speakers pronounced this as “kham” vs. “cam”. Listen to this again: “kham” vs. “cam”. Vietnamese has a soft “C” sound as well, but for this phrase, “Ca’m o*n”, we’re using the hard “C” sound.
The other thing I want to remind you is that Vietnamese is a tonal language, which means a word can be pronounced at different pitches. Thus, the first word is pronounced “Ca’m”. If you say the word at a neutral pitch, it means “orange”. Let me say both so you can hear it. “Ca’m” and then “Cam”. If you can “Ca’m o*n”, it would confuse the other party since there’s no such phrase in Vietnamese.
One other thing I want to point out: if you’re saying thank you to an older person such as her parents or an elder, you will want to add “Ba’c” to the end of it. Thus, it would be “Ca’m o*n Ba’c”. If you leave off the end, it would be considered very impolite.
If you’re speaking to your lady or a somebody else roughly at your age or younger, you can use “Ca’m o*n” since you two are equals.
Now, let’s ask, “How are you doing?”
The core phrase is, “Kho?e kho^ng?” However, this phrase is rarely used without a modifier. If your lady’s name is Linh, it would be, “Linh kho?e kho^ng?” In English, it’s more common to say, “How are you doing Linh?”. With this phrase in Vietnamese, the name is at the start so it’s “Linh kho?e kho^ng?”
So let me point out a couple of things about the pronunciation of these words. The word “kho?e” has a lower one than the 2nd one. If you pronounce the word at the neutral sound “khoe”, it means “to show off”.
So to pull it all together, if your lady’s name is Linh, then you would say, “Linh kho?e kho^ng?” to ask how she’s doing.
If you are talking to an older person such as her mom or dad, you would say to each of them, “Ba’c kho?e kho^ng?” If you recall from an earlier video, the “Ba’c” is a generic term for an elder. Let me say that again: “Ba’c kho?e kho^ng?”
So to quickly recap, when you say thank you to your lady or a person approximately your age, you would say “Ca’m o*n”. If you’re speaking to an elder, you would say, “Ca’m o*n Ba’c.”
To ask how Linh is doing, it would be, “Linh kho?e kho^ng?”
To ask how an elder is doing, it would be, “Ba’c kho?e kho^ng?”

I have been to Asia and am now dating a Vietnamese lady. I noticed a long time ago that many Asians (men and women) adopt Western names when they enter the U.S. to live, like your Alex. Is it polite to ask my GF what is her VN name and start using it when we are together? Would the question be offensive or acceptable? Thanks. Great videos!
