  • My friend purchased a 1979 Lincoln Versailles a few years ago, & left it sitting due to mechanical problems he & his local shop failed to fix. Now, we bring it out of the garage for the first time in years for a full cleaning inside & out in order to ready it for sale for $900!

    The Versailles was Lincoln’s answer to GM’s Cadillac Seville. It was rushed to market when the Seville was a runaway success. I never cared for the first body style that had the Granada roofline. When Lincoln tweaked the roof a bit, it made all the difference. I loved both the Seville and the Versailles, but when it comes down to the success of either model, even though Seville sold more by far, you never see either of these cars today.
    I would love to find a black Versailles, at one point, these cars were offered in a 2 tone paint scheme that was eye catching as well.
    I hope wherever it ends up, it’s brought back to life and once again turns heads as it did 40 years ago.

      Cadillac did a better job of disguising the Nova/Camaro heritage of the Seville than Ford did disguising the Granada lineage of this car. But the Granada, with its very expensive looking interior and extra sound deadening, was a better fit for a luxury car than the penalty-box Nova, so it needed less tweaking. I'd rather be seen in the Seville, but with its roomier front seating and simpler engine, I'd rather live with a Versailles.

    Many garages don't know how to work on these older cars that don't have computers. These are rare cars and a lot were cannibalized for their 8 inch rear ends.

    • @azhurelpigeon
      @azhurelpigeon  Před 4 měsíci +4

      Yeahhh super unfortunate that so many of them died in the name of drag racing 😔
      And in the case of this specific shop I think they just suck haha but that’s certainly true generally, which is funny because older cars are easier to work on

    Yea, actually fellas, this Lincoln is way more than just a pretty Granada. It's got way way more options than the top of the line Granada/Monarch. The Lincoln's suspension has nothing to do with Granada/Monarch. Your Lincoln has 10s and 10s of pounds sound deadening insulation.
    So, no sir, it's not a Granada. Other than some shared body panels.

    • @ATL1999
      @ATL1999 Před 4 měsíci

      Nah, it’s a Grenada/Monarch. Ford should have been ashamed for trying to pass this off as a Lincoln. The later year runs did get better with the limo roofline.

    The Versailles actually had a fair bit of upgrades over the Granada. It was the first domestic car to have clearcoat paint and electronic controls. The clearcoat on Ford and Lincoln products was really high quality until they moved to a cheaper one in the mid 80’s. The dashboard is real leather, and it was actually built on the same line as the bigger Lincoln’s which had a nicer build quality. They were crazy expensive new to boot

    IIRC that car was on the Falcon platform dating to 1959 for the 1960 model year. Ford replaced the Mercury Grand Monarch with this car. (That is Grand MONARCH, not Grand Marquis.) I think this car had a fiberglass cap that gave it that distinctive roofline that the earlier models didn't have. The early models also had the 5.8 liter (351 c.i.d) Windsor engine that was eliminated on the later models in the interest of Corporate Average Fuel Economy requirements. GREAT VIDEO!

    My leasing company had a 1978 Versailles, and it was the hit of the store! Stock # LAN801, for Anaheim location (Southwest Leasing), 1978 model year, unit #1. What was exhilarating then may be less than interesting today. That's the way of the automotive world. My 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora sat in a local repair/body shop from November 2020 until THIS January! It was fine because the car had major rust issues, being from Michigan. And I have twenty-three other vehicles. Twenty miles on the odometer in 38 months.

    5:23 Is that a caster adjustment strut rod I see? These made the switch from bias ply to radial tires a little easier. They were all the rage in the early 1960s when the Falcon was designed and Ford must have kept them in all of the U.S. Falcon descendants. GM got rid of them in all of its full sized 1971 models except the Cadillacs, which were often used to build hearses and ambulances, which sometimes used bias ply tires. For some reason, 1990s Honda Accords also had them.

      The Versailles had a narrower disc brake 9 inch rear end which is very popular with hot rodders and NASCAR until recently they used a variation of. Meaning it has 4 wheel disc brakes. That is a nice car that can be brought back easily. Would seriously consider adding this car to my Lincoln pack. But so far away in NC. Has very good bones. Much more than a Granada. Have seen both up close. The weatherstripping, insulation, interior quality and stability from greater frame bracing makes it a true Lincoln. Hope it’s appreciated wherever it winds up.
