  • Today as the Winnipeg Jets came into Pittsburgh to play the Penguins, both teams were looking to get a little momentum going for the 2nd half of the NHL season. The Jets saw the return of Mark Schiefele as well as adding Sean Monahan and the Penguins saw the return of Reilly Smith as well as adding Jesse Puljujärvi. This game had good goal tending, broken glass coming down on the Penguins bench and of course, the hard to watch hit on Penguins forward Noel Acciari. Jets D Brenden Dillon laid a crushing hit to Acciari in the 2nd period of the game that saw Acciari go flying as his helmet came off. This was a brutal hit to the head from Dillon who received a 5 minute major and was ejected from the game. I cover that and everything else in todays NHL hockey video!

    So why is peoples opinioj on this that Dillon didnt try to hit him in the head, but when Bedard got smashed in the face in pretty mich the same way (small dude lunging forward, and huge defensemen smashes him in the face), most people blame Bedard? Whats the difference here?

    • @the_Weib
      @the_Weib Před 3 měsíci +29

      It’s most likely the fact that Bedard was entering the zone with his head down vs Accari who was playing heads up even if he was in an awkward position. It’s been a recent issue with younger players keeping their eyes down on the puck while skating into high traffic areas.

      The bedard hit is just straight up a different hit

    • @connerblah
      @connerblah Před 3 měsíci +14

      Smith's hit on Bedard was straight through the body. "Unavoidable head contact". Smith was travelling parallel to Bedard's trajectory, so Bedard's head being down put it between Smith and his body. Smith can't be expected to just let him through since his head is down.
      Dillon picks Acciari's head with a poor angle of attack. Dillon is coming from the side (i.e. not parallel to Acciari's trajectory), so he has the ability to hit Acciari without hitting his head. He didn't, and will face the consequences.
      Completely different hits. Though I suspect that the rules will evolve to eventually outlaw the Smith hit as well, just as how turning your back on a player along the boards has become a legitimate way to defend the puck since defenders are penalized for hitting players that do that now.

      @@insertnamehere313 Acciari isn't bent over any more than normal. Compare him to the other Jets players in the frame. When you bend your knees, your head naturally comes forward. Being bent over would actually help Dillon make a full body check from the side, since there's more cross-sectional area to contact relative to his approach vector.
      This just comes down to the fact that Dillon can make a legal hit with no head contact if his approach is slightly more to his left. Since it is possible, he is responsible for avoiding head contact. Intent has nothing to do with it. He failed to execute and is on the hook for the consequences.
      I also have no idea why you're saying anything about a 20 game suspension. He has a phone hearing, so can't get more than 5. I suspect 2-3.

    I’m a Bruins fan, and as any True Fan understands. Once a Bruin, Always a Bruin.
    Acciari was a man who I enjoyed watching, years ago. Apologies if I misspelt his name, been a while.
    I know I wasn’t a fan of Dillon when he was a Cap. Having him end up in Winnipeg, I felt his nasty edge would be a weird addition to the Jets.
    I still believe the league needs to give season suspensions for headshots. Only caviat is if the player who gets hit in the head, makes every move possible from his own angle, to connect his head so that it results in the opposing player receiving a penalty. In this situation. It definitely looks like Dillon was aiming body and Acciari managed to get enough of his body backed up, where it left his head vulnerable.
    At this point it’s kinda like a brake-check.
    Where a person drives in front of another, and presses on their brake to scare the person behind them in a ‘think-fast’ manner, insurance fraud if you will.
    As I see this hit. Dillon wouldn’t deserve a season suspension, more of a 5 game suspension, as he didn’t make a blatant attempt to ONLY hit Acciari’s head. However, it’s still something that requires a visible punishment.
    I’m sure someone else will argue semantics as well…but those are my 5 cents.

      ive seen so many people trying to blame accari for being bent over during the play but the fact is he was in that position for quite a while before contact was made, in this instance the responsibility is entirely on dillon to either react accordingly and make a clean hit or realize that he isnt going to be able to take this hit cleanly and chose another defensive option. my thinking is that he thought he could make a clean hit but just want able to. not sure if a suspension is the right idea but the nhl does want to eliminate head hits as much as possible so if they do go with that id understand

Some of this might be due to U15 not being a physical sport anymore and so younger players don't expect hits, don't know how to deliver hits, or don't know how to defend against hits. There is some responsibility on the skater with the puck that's going to take a hit to also defend themselves accordingly. Acciari didn't do this at all and paid the price.

His centre of gravity went from parallel to the ice moving towards the boards to one which moved in an upward direction. Watch the stretching of his torso, straightening up to full height, and explosion upward on contact with his skates beginning to leave the ice.
    Again, the key is he knew his opponent was vulnerable and changed his body position explosively in order to increase the potential damage.

    Acciari ,unfortunately was leaning forward and down when Dillion made contact. Had he been skating straight up then it’s a clean hit. I don’t think Dillion was at fault but due to breaking Teddy Bruegers jaw he’s kinda a marked man. I don’t see it as a suspenable hit but the NHL will see it differently.

      I'd encourage you to watch the video again. The video is in slow motion, Accari pushes the puck forward at 2:17 it leaves his stick. Dillion makes contact at 2:18 in slow motion. We see when Accari has the puck on his stick at 2:17, he sees Dillion, and Dillion is lined up for the hit. There is no way that this was late. Some hits are late but the video clearly shows it wasn't a late hit. You might disagree on the type of it which I'd argue as well but this was about as close to as simultaneous as you can get.

    Thats what happens when your small and don't keep your head up. CLEAN HIT.
    Not Charging: Dillon left the ice after initial contact and simply stood his ground (did not needlessly skate a long distance to make a hit).
    Not a hit to the head: NHL rules state that it's a hit to the head if contact with the head is avoidable. You can read more into what the NHL deem as "avoidable head contact", but Dillon attempted to hit squarely IMO, while Acciari put himself in a vulnerable position.

    It's unfortunate and I hope Accari is ok. BUT the fact that Accari leaned to push the puck forward putting himself in an exposed vulnerable position is his responsibility.
    Dillion didn't leave his feet or lunge or cross-check him into the boards. Like accidents when you're driving your reaction to avoid the accident can often make it worse. If you're avoiding getting hit from the front and you swerve you could now expose the side which is weaker. To me, that's what Accari did. We see that he sees Dillion probably realizes he's exposed by the reach and turns and the attempt to avoid instead of taking the hit seemed to make it much worse for him. As you can see the shoulder is there but the extension and the turn seem to expose his head first then the shoulder. Rough play but the 5 and the game should be it.
    What I would like to see is the hits from behind or blindsided hits where the player doesn't see it coming and doesn't have the puck taken out of the game but those this year have not been dealt with very well in my opinion.

    THE HIT: I’ve watched a few videos in the last 20 minutes that have talked about it. At first, I felt the same as you. “It wasn’t malicious and the call on the ice was right. Don’t think it’s suspension worthy.” However, having seen it now about 15 times from multiple angles at many various speeds, I’m second guessing the suspension worthy part a little. There is that one low angle of it from a Jets zone camera that clearly shows Dillon leaving his feet. He does leave his feet shortly after the hit, but it clearly isn’t from the contact. It is a follow up from his momentum. As such, he was clearly elevating his trajectory for a more aggressive impact. Because of this little detail, I won’t complain or be surprised if it ends up being a 1 or 2 game suspension. 🤷🏻‍♂️
