After I watched your video on the Russian VDV, I got one off ebay. I paid about 50 bucks, it's easily my favorite mess kit, perfect for 1 person and don't take up any extra space or weight in a ruck, just cant be beat! As always I enjoyed your video!

Fantastic my man I really appreciate the little wire trick that goes over the original GI stove for the canteen set.. that little wire trick saved me a ton of time... I don't have to lift the stove off of the fire with my cup and it dropping in my lap or whatever but that little wire trick does the job thank you very much for the info

If some enterprising business were to make a copy of the Russian set in stainless steel, maybe make the canteen plastic to cut down weight I`d buy one in a heartbeat.I think its a clever design but as you mentioned in the vid the fact that its aluminium makes it a no go for me.
I have a SVD set. I like it. But, it is heavy and is not for light camping. I also have a Chinese PLA kit and it is lighter. Plus the Chinese kit has a shoulder strap.
yes sir, it looks mighty good! don't know who wouldn't like those pots from the russian VDV, but i do wish it were SS instead of aluminum. i want the stuff to last to hand down to grandchildren. pin holes in aluminum in the past. that VDV set is very nice though i agree! all of that fancy stuff like pathfinder is thin walled and expensive. not the kind of quality i want. somebody gave me a plastic usgi canteen over 30 years ago and i had a wrinkled-up face at it thinking it wouldn't last, but it has lasted and they're inexpensive, too. it's been in my truck 30 years and used hundreds of times and it doesn't leak. i don't go anywhere without that usgi canteen cook set. nice cook-out! enjoyed time with you my friend - hit liked and thank you!

The Russian kit is a great set for day trips on a canoe, or day hikes. I used it on the trail to make hot tea with the German Esbit and U.S. Heat tabs. I agree with many of the other posters. The Russian kit should be copied and made in Stainless. It is a very good design

I’ve had that Russian kit for about a year now. I think it is an awesome design. As far as I know, it’s the only kit with a flask, cup/lid and a pot. Would be great to see a modern incarnation of the Russian kit.

Of course if they call it the VDV mess kit the easily impressed think it had to be better than the ordinary issue item. Loved the remark at the end about having to use every item just because its there. So true.
Gifted a USGI canteen kit , use almost daily, portion of food enough to satisfy on the move, or a way to make a hearty cuppa Joe. The Soviet kit reminds me of a Faberge nesting nik- nak & or an adaptation to German mess kit with a Soviet Union Identity in culture.
I wonder if you drill small holes in the lid cup and if you could make a lid for the lid cup it would make a good way to steam your vegetables as you boil your water
I prefer french water mess kit : It contain 1.3L of water ( more realistic for one day consumption than the 0.75l russian) , is available in polyethylene OR aluminium , and the bowl in stainless steel OR aluminium, and use a solid fuel tablet stove alu fitted in the strong bag. Was used between 1952 and late 2010' and is cheap on ebay .

Yes you can. My plastic USGI canteen fits inside the VDV pot. The only thing is the cup handle that normally locks onto the Russian canteen can't lock onto the US canteen and it protrudes out a little bit and the Russian cover will not fit with the US canteen installed. I carried my East German mess kit it one for awhile, I’m glad to hear that the VDV kit fits, I went checking for a VDV set and dang, they got very hard to find guess I’m gonna have to go direct to russia for the kit
John:The German (BW) kit will fit in a 200rd MOLLE pouch quite nicely. Swedish kit, too. British and French kits will fit in a MOLLE canteen / utility pouch.

Anybody care to share tips on how to clean that nasty oil (preservative?)/rubber smell from these canteens ? I just received my kit and in the process of giving it a through cleaning I'm still noticing an interesting smell coming from the inside of the canteen. It is definitely new old stock/unused, so I assume the smell is mostly the rubber cap thingy + long term storage smell. There was a light sheen of some kind of oil on the canteen exterior too. Can't wait to test it during combat operations (Chasing deer next deer season in Pennsylvania). Heheheheheheh.

It eould depend on the cooktime of the veggies, if they are fast to cook like mushrooms, no they should go in last if they are long to cook, you can put them earlier.

Caffiend I have the Crusader set with cooker, with steel lid (USGI type, flattened to fit) with a small vaseline tin + glassfibre wick as the stove. Meths in small shampoo bottles (the free ones from hotel rooms.) Compact, efficient and sturdy.

If you go by what you get AS ISSUED , the Soviet wins , hands down . Like showing a pimped out car, with all the 3rd party cheese on it , and NOT as it rolled off the assymbly line .
I don't think using the plastic G.I. canteen makes it a fair comparison. The metal canteen is actually made to be used on the canteen stove, right along with the cup. You also have to include the canteen cup lid, and the real canteen stove. When you do this, there's no comparison. The G.I. set wins going away. Realloy, why use the plastic canteen at all. It's a +latecomer, and not part of the original set. And for full honesty, you have to include the G.I. mess kit which is intended to be part of the canteen cook set. They are not separate units, but are one, single cook set. Something many don't realize is that most military kits are made according to the diet that soldier is used to eating in his home country. In Russia, and bordering countries that were part of the Soviet Union, the diet was soups, stews, and boiled vegetabvles, usually root vegetables. Because of this, they need to boil all sorts of things. In the U.S., we fry a lot of food, so the mess kit includes a skillet, which is something Northern European soldiers were not used to doing. One other thing that escapes the attention on many is a cover for the G.I. Mess Kit. The cover for the two quart G.I. canteen is also a cover for the G.I. mess kit. Anyway, when you compare apples to apples, the G.I. kit wins in every category except how much water you can boil, and it comes close there, especially when you add a second cup and lid, which many canteen covers would actually hold.
I always tell everybody I know that does camping or hiking to carry at least one metal water container in case you need to boil water, preferably stainless steel but aluminum will work just as good, just won't be as durable as SS.

Keep in mind, the US kit was developed in 1910. Way before paratroopers. In 1910 we were already ahead of everyone.

Yes it does as long as it’s a genuine US butterfly cup. It will not fit the Chinese Rothco re-make cup.

I got my two kits out and tried them. The aluminum French canteen will fit into the small Russian cup but not into the pot. The canteen is too fat.

If you go by what you get AS ISSUED , the Soviet wins , hands down . Like showing a pimped out car, with all the 3rd party cheese on it , and NOT as it rolled off the assymbly line .
I don't think using the plastic G.I. canteen makes it a fair comparison. The metal canteen is actually made to be used on the canteen stove, right along with the cup. You also have to include the canteen cup lid, and the real canteen stove. When you do this, there's no comparison. The G.I. set wins going away. Realloy, why use the plastic canteen at all. It's a +latecomer, and not part of the original set.
And for full honesty, you have to include the G.I. mess kit which is intended to be part of the canteen cook set. They are not separate units, but are one, single cook set. Something many don't realize is that most military kits are made according to the diet that soldier is used to eating in his home country. In Russia, and bordering countries that were part of the Soviet Union, the diet was soups, stews, and boiled vegetabvles, usually root vegetables. Because of this, they need to boil all sorts of things.
In the U.S., we fry a lot of food, so the mess kit includes a skillet, which is something Northern European soldiers were not used to doing.
One other thing that escapes the attention on many is a cover for the G.I. Mess Kit. The cover for the two quart G.I. canteen is also a cover for the G.I. mess kit. Anyway, when you compare apples to apples, the G.I. kit wins in every category except how much water you can boil, and it comes close there, especially when you add a second cup and lid, which many canteen covers would actually hold.
I always tell everybody I know that does camping or hiking to carry at least one metal water container in case you need to boil water, preferably stainless steel but aluminum will work just as good, just won't be as durable as SS.
