- Bobby Jones' highlights
One of the most underrated basketball players ever; he was an amazing defender (one of the best of all time), he was a great athlete, he was smart, he could block shots, he could steal the ball, he could either guard the post or the perimeter, he rebounded at good rate, he hustled on every play, he provided solid and very efficient scoring, he was also a decent passer, plus he left it all on the court and did what had to be done in order to win. Looking at everything, he deserves a spot in the Hall of Fame.

Finally, Bobby will be inducted into the Hall of Fame!
When? Long Overdue!
Does anyone know the song at 3:00 minutes til the end? Rolling Stones is guessing ?

@@BasketballJones48021 Picture Jones playing with those Laker squads in the early '80s.Magic would have a field day throwing him Alley Oop passes.
When this yr next year didn't he play in the old aba
the most underrated player in the history of the game!
He just may be. Esp over so many guys with big stats.
Criminally underrated.
He and Michael Cooper were 2 unsung champs who did what they needed to make their teams winners.
When I saw this video that was seriously the other name that came to mind back in the day - Michael Cooper. Jones and Cooper were two guys (I know there were others) who just barley ever uttered a word, went largely unnoticed yet did incredible dirty work to become champs. These guys were awesome players. Unsung champs is spot on.
@@valueinyou9931 I don't know how he went stats-wise, but I've always thought of Buck Williams that way. And he was graceful and served as the Players' Union president if I'm not mistaken
@@GBV1436 Great one. Buck was another phenomenal example of a blue collar, dirty work guy who said very little yet contributed mightily. I should have thought of him being an Oregonian myself. Well done
And they are now both in the Hall of Fame!!!
In Philly everyone loved Bobby Jones. White or Black it didn't matter. He was all hustle and all about the team.
Back then, in Philly... you could be purple. If you played your heart out, the fans would love you forever.
@@Rob774 nah Philly had racial tension in certain neighborhoods but in basketball brought the city together especially with unselfish guys like Bobby Jones.
@@marvelandgroup Jones was a class act on a class team. No bs out of those guys. They played to win. Such a great team.
Facts. The hoopers at my Philly HS loved him and the black dudes nicknamed any white dudes that could play,"Bobby Jones". He was universally loved in 80s Philly.
@@marvelandgroup Yes in the '80s thanks to Frank Rizzo and his gang called The Philadelphia Police.
As a Celtics fan who saw almost every game Larry Bird played, I can attest to how great Jones was. People talk about how scary Lakers Showtime was back in the day (and they were). But NOTHING was scarier to Celtics fans in the early 80's than seeing Dr J., Bobby Jones, Andrew Toney and Maurice Cheeks coming hard on the fast break. Dr. J and Bobby Jones on the wings of a fast break was something to see. They put a LOT of vicious dunks on the Celts and beat us in the playoffs in 1980 and 1982. And Bobby Jones really was the best defensive forward of that era hands down.
This Boston fan agrees. Bobby and Dr J were the supreme fast break wingmen as teammates in their time. Maybe as good in any time on the break.
As a Laker fan, I always remembered that when the chips were down, Jones was a starter. Not coming off the bench.
It wasn't just the dunks, flying blocks or steals. Bobby seemed to be a part of so many loose ball scrums, deflections, broken plays like no other. You can't measure that.
His floor game was one of the best of ALL TIME. I have never seen better from ANYBODY.
One of the greatest defensive players to ever play the game and the heart and soul of the 76ers.
One of the best forwards in the game during the late 1970's/early 1980's era, though hardly remembered today. One of the best ever in using his offhand (left) hand and was such a great defender who hustled every second he was on the court. Incredibly athletic. A quiet, humble and unassuming star who didn't care about recognition, only about winning. Too bad we don't have too many of those anymore in sports. Bobby Jones should be in the Hall of Fame.
Ed Vega Very well said.
+Ed Vega You are correct. Bobby Jones should be in the Hall of Fame.
you got that right this guy was sooooo underrated
@@tunett123 He is in Springfield (NBA HOF) he was the original version of TOM CHAMBERS.
@@dwightlove3704 their styles were very different though. Chambers looked primarily to score & was one of the first pf's with 3 pt range. He was a fair defender at best.
John Wooden used a phrase once that really fit Bobby Jones: "a spectacular, unspectacular player." He was a role player who did little things in a big way.
Clean, athletic , finesse, skilled player. How the game was MEANT to be played. Didn't dirty it up like Rodman, Laimbeer.
Mick A rodman >>>>>> jones
You can't compare the two. It was a different game by then. Rodman was asked to play it differently. You don't have to tear him down, by propping up Bobby.
Ok, not just Bobby. Michael Cooper didn't play dirty either. And the top scorers all respected him. Hard nosed, sure, but not a cheap shot artist (Rodman, Laimbeer and Isiah). Yes, Isiah.
incredible defender , athlete and all around player.
My favorite player of all time is Bobby Jones. I loved how he would always slam dunk on Larry Bird, and pretty much any one else! God bless you Bobby.
I remember when Darryl Dawkins once called him "The baddest white dude in the league."
After Larry Bird of course! 😄
@@vdLeo-je6os ...Before Larry Bird.
@@brucescott4261 Ok I guess you are right!
@@vdLeo-je6os Very right he had more athleticism than Bird.
@@vdLeo-je6os Bobby Jones didnt care who Larry Bird was. Nor Magic, Nor, Dr. J.
He runs like a gazelle on the fast break.
It is uncanny how fast he was. Not to mention ridiculous leaping ability.
This guy was super athletic just look at him get up on those dunks and blocks
He broke North Carolina's varsity record in high jump. Bob McAdoo also jumped back in the day.
@@panetero No wonder he could jump out of the building I never knew he had a track background.
@@dwightlove3704 If you liked Bobby, you would definitely love the 2000s version of him, but even more athletic and arguably a better defender (definitely a better shot blocker), Andrei Kirilenko (AK47). Long story short, he's the only player in NBA history to have a 5x6 in regulation time (when you have at least 6 in 5 different categories- pts, rebs, ast, blk, stl, in one game- 14 points, 9 assists, 8 rebounds, 7 blocks and 6 steals vs. the Lakers on 3rd Jan, 2006. The only other player to do it was Hakeem Olajuwon, but it was in an overtime game. Him an Hakeem are also the only 2 players to have 3 or more 5X5 games! He's also the only player besides Ben Wallace 6'9 or shorter to average over 3 blocks a game in 2 or more seasons, and lead the league in blocks two or more seasons as well. He's also the only SF ever to do those same things. I won't say more, just see for yourself, you'll enjoy AK47, the freak of nature! i can watch Bobby Jones all day how he plays. The most underrated player. Bobby Jones always and forever
Him and doug collins,always moving.

When I saw 1 ytube posting of him it brought back so many happy memories, I've gone on a Bobby Jones binge.i think him and Erving were close, I lived in Philly ,I remember the local papers noting prayer services he attended with Mr.Jones.
About time they recognized Bobby Jones. He is on my Dream team as 6th man and would dunk on every star today!
I believe Jones elevated the idea of chasing players from behind to an imaginable comprehension. For other players to measure what is possible.
Bobby Jones belongs in the top 20 best all around players in NBA history!!
On both ends, could be.
@@VictorLionsTV ...I concur, totally!
Good as a starter or reserve. In his day or ANY era.
Amen!
This is how the game of basketball should be played. Bobby Jones did all the things that make your "team" better. What a joy he was to watch.
Put that man in the Hall of Fame! Seriously, there has never been a better team player or wing defender in NBA history. It's about more than stats, it's about winning. And Bobby Jones never missed the playoffs. Never. 8-time all-Defense First Team? And Calvin freakin Murphy is in and he's not? Please...
Damn. Didn't realize that. Not really surprised, though. Truly a winning , selfless type of player. I'm fine with Murphy in Hall. Not so with Haywood, McGinnis, Sampson. I feel Jamaal Wilkes is questionable, too.
He's in, it's been reported. Well-deserved and long overdue.
@@VictorLionsTV it is. Spencer was truly outstanding about his first 4 yrs. But quite a dropoff after that.
He never lands awkwardly despite jumping in traffic.
Davan Mani I’m old saw Booby Jones vs GSW In the 70’s . With Dr J , what a show worth the risk of sneaking in . We’d rush a door all running in different directions I didn’t get caught . Meet up at the top look for empty seats W’s had a lot back then . No way kids could get away with it now need to show a ticket to use a bathroom .. innocent fun .
Jones had above average hops . On a fast break clear path put one foot in the key he was dunking . Totally underrated
You made a succinct basketball analysis.
@@tellthetruthg Haha man awesome memories...those were the days huh.
Bobby was coached by one of the best ever, Dean Smith of UNC. He was destined to be great as Coach Smith taught him the fundamentals. He was a beast on defense and was very quick on the break. Didn't hurt him much that he was 6'9". Awesome ball player. This was one white boy that could indeed JUMP!
Dean Smith turned out great, great pros: Jordan, Worthy, Perkins, Jones, Cunningham, etc.
He seems to be taller than 6'9". He looks taller than Larry Bird.
And he was coached by Larry Brown.
L. Ball is disruptive like Jones was.

I celebrated when the Philadelphia 76ers got Bobby Jones. My FAVORITE SIXER!
And McGinnis just got in the Hall. Hate to put a damper on it, but .... without that deal, Sixers are stuck in the mud.
@@Amick44 Totally agree with you. McGinnis was a shoot first player. He could rebound and pass the ball, but he was not a great shooter. His scoring came from many attempts from the field. In Jones, you have someone who looks to make the play that will more likely yield points as well as a great defender.
Thanks for posting. I grew up a fan of Dr. J. and I forgot how valuable Bobby Jones was a player. He is one of the reasons the Sixers were NBA finalists so often in the early 80's. Underrated, underappreciated. He would be a great player in today's game also. It was a great pleasure watching him and the Doctor share the court. Two classy and skilled athletes.
Congrats to Bobby Jones for his Hall of Fame induction. One of the most outstanding defensive standouts of all time.
I got hurt playing high school basketball for a Christian high school in Jersey and one of my classmates's father was the chaplain for the 76ers. We had a class party while I was stuck in traction at home and Dr. J and Bobby Jones stopped by (yeah I know...sigh). They both wrote me an encouraging note to hang in there etc. and I was blown away that they would take the time to do that. My whole life was sports at the time and I never played again after that injury. It meant so much to me. Unfortunately, I have no idea what happened to the notes, but I'll never forget them. Bobby was my favorite player.
Great story, thanks for sharing.
So overlooked and underrated, Bobby was simply phenomenal
thank you for that, he played both ends relentlessly, would run a guy down and punch his shit , had never ending energy kind of like a white Dennis Rodman but with a humble, reserved, respectful demeanor, more athleticism and a and better offensive game. I watched him during his whole time as a 76er and he was a champion. A true professional, playoffs clutch performer, showed up when it counted. Philly will always LOVE Bobby Jones !!
He makes his home in NC
Yep, well said. He was certainly one of the most versatile players of all time.
I love Bobby Jones. But he was not more athletic than Dennis Rodman. Dennis is the greatest defender I have ever seen. Bobby Jones was second.
I dont see the Dennis Roman comparison.
Jones and statistically, way more blocks and steals. i am not certain people understand the difference.
Impossible not to like his play.
The guy was so graceful
As a die hard philly fan I remember bobby jones awesome defense and all out hustle doesn't get the credit he deserves more important a strong believer in the Jesus christ
Dr. Was the show as a kid but Bobby Jones was definitely our favorite player. We used to call him Spock because he never seemed to be expressing much emotion. He was awesome!! Total baller.
He was Spock with leaping ability.
@@dwightlove3704 Truth!!
@@MarkSmith-dx3cd You get no argument from me or Julius Erving after I saw Jones block one of his shots as a Denver Nugget.
To underrate Bobby Jones is not logical....
One of my favorite players. He played on two very fun teams to watch: the ABA Nuggets and the NBA 76ers. Both teams loaded with talent. Although he was a great defender even right out of college, I remember him being scorched by Dr J in the ABA Finals in the final year of the ABA. Julius was definitely in his prime that season. I'm sure Jones was happy to have him as a teammate, so he wouldn't have to defend him. He was a great high jumper, clearing 6'8". Despite being a great athlete, as evidenced in this video, he was a man with several health issues: epilepsy and asthma. Makes what he accomplished on the court even that much more impressive.
David Thompson said that's why Larry Brown traded him (Denver to Philly). Brown loved him, too. But felt Bobby would be better getting out of the high altitude of Denver. Thompson said it just showed how much Brown cared about PEOPLE, not just what players could do for the team. Felt he was doing Bobby a favor, giving his asthma and epilepsy.
Wow! And Philly benefitted greatly.
They made a real coup in getting Bobby (trade) and Maurice Cheeks in the draft. Absolutely couldn't have done much better in getting 2 truly unselfish, 2 way players coaches loved and players loved to play with.
@@Amick44 If Jones and Thompson had played together their entire careers they would have gone done as one of the top offensive duos in NBA HISTORY.
One thing I can say about bobby jones, on a fastbreak no matter who's down there waiting on him, he's gonna dunk on you. That's what I loved about him
Bobby Jones was a great, relentless defensive player that is all we usually hear about but what gets ignored is his wonderfully competent offensive skills. I watched him once he got traded to Philly in 1977. He filled the lane like a gazelle and was good for throwing flying dunks on the break OR hitting a 15 ft jumper or a rolling hook. No he could not create his own jumper off the dribble, that was his only weakness.
Bobby Jones is one of the great athletes ever play in the NBA
Bobby Jones was on the 1983 team when the Sixers won the championship over the Lakers.Bobby Jones Julius Erving and Moses Malone were great.Bobby Jones is probably the most underrated player in NBA history.
I remember watching his battles against Dr. J in the ABA days.
Bobby Jones was proto-Rodman. Phenomenal athlete. Great ball player without any caveats or qualifiers. Just great.
amazing athlete.
This guy was the ultimate team player. Mr. Hustie. Also a tremendous, graceful athlete. He could play on any team, any era.
The inaugural winner of the Sixth Man Award, which should be renamed the "Bobby Jones Sixth Man of the Year Award," just like they named the NBA Finals MVP, the "Bill Russell Finals MVP"... Also, the Season MVP should be named the "Wilt Chamberlain Season MVP"... Just a few random thoughts.
If you Google Bobby's bio on Wikipedia you'll see where Charles Barkley comments that if the world was like Bobby Jones it would be a much better place. He is a really first rate human being and I'm proud to come from his home state of North Carolina and to have been a big Tar Heel fan.
I remember watching a Sixer game against the Celtics. After the Sixers made the shot, Jones turned as if to head down court. At the last moment he stepped in front of the inbound pass, stole the ball and made the shot. Bill Fitch almost had a stroke on that play.
Incredible I saw that play it just replayed in my mind thank you!
No 2 better forwards running the floor than Bobby and Doc on same team.
Lets not forget Bobby and Doc on the back cover of comic books...what other NBA can say that...late 70's early80's but i cant remember but i was kid and thats what introduced me to basketball...
All time FAVORITE SIXER!! Quiet, did his job, No Look at Me! Very Unselfish!!
Great basketball player, fantastic leaper, wonderful humility. Although I disliked the Nuggets and the Sixers, I loved seeing Bobby display both defensive and offensive prowess. Dr. J and David Thompson weren't shabby either.
Hard working and relentless defender big part of the 76ers success in those days... Shout out to Dave Zinkoff 👍🏽
One of UNC Tar Heels and Philadelphia 76ers' finest, PERIOD!!! The very first sixth man of the year.
Bobby Jones had an all around game. He played defense, could score and was a great leaper.
I remember him from his ABA days playing alone side David Thompson in Denver.
Bobby Jones could do it all. He should be a Hall of Famer.
The Great Bobby Jones
Bobby Jones was incredibly quick, and played the game very fast. His nickname from his teammates was "white lightning". Together with Darryl "chocolate thunder" Dawkins, as well as the smoothness of Dr. J, the 76ers of that era were the most exciting team to watch.
How had I not heard of Bobby Jones until he was in my recommends 3x this week. I've been playing and watching ball since the 90s.
One of the Best Defenders in the NBA . A very good all around player and deserves to be in the Hall Of Fame !
That tip-in at 1:30 is incredible ! He is still lying at the free-throw line when the shot goes up !
He and Maurice Cheeks really deserve to be in the hall of fame.
Thankfully and deservedly, they now are.
@@VictorLionsTV It sure does. And Walter Davis & Bobby Dandridge are still looking in.
He totally deserved to be in the HOF. BEST 6th man ever!!!!
Tremendous player who did his job , never seen him complain , Sixers we’re lucky to have him
he was amazing!
High jumper in high school - him and Dr, J made quite a tandem at forward for that Philly team.
One of my favorite Sixers.
The hustle to get back up for that put back... you cannot teach that
I can think of alot of other players that Bobby Jones could have easily replace as HOF'ers, before now!
This has nothing to do with race.
Bobby Jones was a bad White Guy! He Could Play The Game and was one of my favorite players back in the 80's!
What I liked most about him was that he had a very calm Demeanor in the most heated of battles.
I could very easily talk about the fact that he could Jump out the gymnasium! I know he had to have at least a 40 inch vertical! He was very athletic, had good foot speed, played Great Defense, and when He and Doc were on the break, somebody on the opposing team was getting dunked on, for Sure!!!
But I honestly think, for me, the most telling component to his game was his I.Q., court awareness, and his unselfishness!
His being able to perform in the biggest of moments I thought, had alot to do with his always being calm and under control, which means he was a thinking man's player.
That's why he was able to make so many Great Plays and change the momentum of games, "Sometimes Singlehandedly, all by himself"!
Dr.J, Andrew Toney, Moses Malone got most of the credit and deservedly so, but if you were to ask any of them, even Mo Cheeks, they would all concur that Bobby Jones was the (Unsung Hero) of the Sixers, especially during the 82, 83 season when they won their Chip....
Without a doubt, one of the most underated players ever, who would have made ANY TEAM he played on better and a contender!
Put it this way, : "If I Had An Opportunity To Get A Signed Autograph From Moses, Doc, Mo Cheeks, And Andrew Toney, I Would Have To Get Bobby Jones's Autograph As Well"!
It would feel incomplete in a since if I didn't!
That's just how important I felt he was to Philly back then.
He was Truely a Superstar, but you wouldn't think so because of his demeanor on the court...
He came to play every night and should have been a "Hall Of Fame Inductee, Many Years Ago!
Bob Jones, one of my favorite players of all time👍🏀💯.....

He and Coop
He was one of my favorites
Just a defensive genius. Best trailing shot blocker ever.
Must have had an incredible 40 time for a tall man, cause that dude could close ground on somebody in an instant. Great leaper/sprinter.
I had given up hope. I really didn't think they were going to put him in. He was a Swiss army knife, he did everything well. He guarded the other teams best scorer every game. He played with his off hand as well as his right hand. Who can say they played with Dr. J and was just as formidable on the wing of a fast break? He was Michael Cooper way before Michael Cooper. And now he's in where he belongs, finally.
I was always a big Bobby Jones fan, even when he was in college. I lived in Denver when he was drafted by the Nuggets. I actually met him on numerous occasions. Such a kind man, generous with his time for his fans. The man was an incredible defender. He was always around the rim, whether offense or defense. He could score in bunches, but he always preferred to be known for his defense. It's too bad today's "players" don't play like him. And I loved how after scoring a basket, he'd ALWAYS point to the player who got the assist. That was his trademark. He was so unassuming, always deferring to his teammates instead of reaping praise for himself.
Bobby Jones blocked more shots from behind than anyone ever.
More than LeBron?!
@@clydetheglidetop5sgtop10du7 Without Jones, the idea of chasing runners down would have remained a figment.
Do you really believe Lebron would have been able to chase down Jones?

Epic dunk at 2:54. That is one quick dude for a tall man.
Chiltonexpress I was thinking the same thing. He is noticeably fast.
And he kept on playing even after a tumble or scrap. He didn't stand there and bitch to the officials like Laimbeer and Kareem (and others. yes, you Lebron). He got up and kept up with the action.
That's Bobby Jones putting Larry Bird in the rim... And he did it many of times
