100% I know that is Mt Adams. Hood would look much smaller from here and has a pointy top. St Helens is to the west and out of frame, and has an abrupt flat appearing top. This is Adams because the top is rounded and narrower compared to St Helens.
You hold the ice axe by the head and place the long in into the up hill side of the slope as you move along, and for self arrest you hold it by the head to get a better purchase on the ice to stop your fall. But you’re technically right the ice axe is useless when crossing a crevasse, that’s why we are roped in.
